Travelling from thurso to Kyle of tongue. Tailgate by an unmarked saloon for about 25miles. Stressing I pulled in a layby. They overtook me passenger put a camera out an took a picture?? As far as I'm aware not doin anything wrong

A few years ago I was on a single track road. I'd just passed a passing place when I met a saloon car which had equally just passed a passing place. As I had a car behind me and obviously it would be easier for a car to reverse rather than a 7 metre motorhome I waited. He beckoned me to reverse. Eventually I got out to explain I had a car behind me (and more joining the queue). He wouldn't speak, didn't even make eye contact and him and his wife both opened newspapers to read!
Obviously I could have stayed there a lot longer than them but I'd have been joining in their little game so gave in and managed to reverse with the cooperation of the drivers behind me.
They passed me laughing like they'd achieved something! The vehicles following them commented that they couldn't believe what they'd done.

How are saloon cars usually "marked"
One assumes the point of the post is to elicit suggestions?
Helpful suggestionBut there must have been lots of places you could have pulled in?
We tend to pull over on narrow roads if we get 2 or 3 cars behind as they are usually locals going about thier business and not sight seeing.

I’ll be honest, without a reg number I’m not sure what you will achieve or want to achieve by talking to police. Even with a reg number a car is travelling behind a motorhome, may not have been in a rush, didn’t do anything aggressive/illegal/sounding horn/travelling too close or trying to overtake inappropriately?……The car may or may not have been exasperated by their lack of progress, who knows, but what is it you want police to do? I think you might be overthinking this. Even if they did take a photograph they still haven’t done anything illegal? I would forget about it and enjoy your trip.

No proof the photographer was from north of Perth.
I'm sorry you were so distressed by the event but what do you expect the police to do?
Obviously this is a case of 'you had to be there' but could the accused/perpetrators just have been admiring your motorhome & keen to purchase their own?
Or maybe Jimbohorlicks had it right in post #3 ?

Or even know the width of their own vehicles.
I find the camera bit slightly weird though

It's funny how these NC500 posts pop up from time to time.
Reading the comments, most are from down south, and I'm not surprised to see the 'I won't go to Scotland' for what ever reason..
Well, as someone who goes on parts of the NC500 all the time, and lives on it, we've never seen any anti motorhome antics, but read about them from people who have never been or won't come for what ever reason, all I can say is good for you.
Do you think we'll miss you ?
BUT, if you do want to come, then do so, as you don't know what you are missing, white beaches, beautiful scenery, fresh (and I do mean FRESH) air. Cheap places to stop at, or lots of free areas near beaches if you know where to look. Plenty of places to get fresh water, empty grey and black waste now as more and more are appearing, lots of them just ask for a donation.
It's probably why the Dutch, Italians, French and Germans love it here in their motorhomes, and we get on average 6 million visitors every year up here in the Highlands, I wonder why ?

Do you know what sort of car it was? Rough year of manufacture?
I'd really just put it all in the 'experience' bin and move on. It may be that they were concerned about you/your driving...slowing down, then speeding up (They may not know motorhome driving etiquette or misunderstood why you'd slowed...and then got back up to your normal driving speed) Perhaps they were in no hurry to get past you as they, like you, were tourists taking in all the views. They more than likely weren't 'following you'...they were simply behind you, going in the same direction on the same strecth of road.
Perhaps the car driver and passenger had a conversation a bit like we are all having on here.
Driver of car "What are they doing?"
Pax "No idea...odd driving, slowing down then speeding up"
Driver " Should I overtake?"
Pax " I'd wait and see what they do next"
Driver "Right, I've had enough, I'm going past, take a quick photo in case they do anything daft"
Pax "OK..here goes...oh, it's a woman driving, thought it would be a feller:

Totally agree, we’ve lived in Scotland all our lives, owned a MH for 4 years now and have 370+ reviews on P4N. My wife and I agree that Scotland but more so England are our least favourite and least welcomed places to tour. Currently on the Moselle and feel welcomed round every bend !!!!

A massive assumption, but did it have a Scottish plate, ie starting with S ?
If not I'd put it down to being English tourists, wanting to complete their NC500 photo album with a fiction of how they were held up by a road-hogging motorhome!
Or perhaps they didn't want to overtake because they thought you knew where the best stop points are, and their only plan was to follow the NC signs

You don't want to drive in France then because french drivers will follow you for miles and miles on nice straight roads then decide to overtake you when you are on a blind bend.

I don’t view it as a game just plain etiquette whilst driving.
1 vehicle reversing or two or more
Plus it’s normally the smaller vehicle reverses as it’s easier.
Probably best I don’t meet them coming the other way

Been travelling around north and west Scotland with caravan or motorhome for c15 years (c 3 months each year) and never experienced any issues with the residents. On the contrary very many of them will give a beep beep on the horn and a wave for letting them passed at the first appropriate place.
What we need to remember is that the residents have had to "put up" with vehicles much larger than motorhomes for very many years, eg forestry trucks, delivery lorries, construction vehicles, etc, so if there is a negativity to motorhomes what actually drives that?
I'm sure giving any of them the finger will go far to improving any relationships with motorhome drivers.

A general point here for everyone and by no means criticism of OPs driving.
I suggest vehicles, whether MHs or otherwise, should not slow down as if to help another driver overtake them. It often creates a level of uncertainty for the driver behind because the front vehicle may turn right without warning, or suddenly brake to turn left. We all have experiences of people not using indicators (few use them early enough), so anything other than maintained progress by the lead vehicle, can create a 'what are they going to do here' moment.
Because of that, it's not wrong for the driver behind, to hold back. It's actually wise and instilled into those doing advanced driving courses.
I shan't speculate but, I would hope, that the 'unmarked car' was enjoying a leisurely drive too and wasn't needing to overtake. Were he wanting to overtake, surely, that driver would have been moving over to improve their view of the road ahead in preparation for the overtake? That; rather than just following.
I hope that alternative, might help ease the mind of (and de-stress), the OP.

When we had a couple of weeks in Scotland it was the visitors driving was the issue.
Even had one pull across in front of me to get into a passing place on my side of the road on the way to the fairy pools
He was from Germany or similar

The other month on our way to Stratford, at around midnight I had a car drive beside me for a mile or two on the A14 just past Bury st. eds. Then just after the A14 leaves the A11/A14 junction into Cambridge, another car drove beside me all the way to Cambridge before shooting off on to a slip road.
All very odd, never had it happen before.
Just shows there's strange people everywhere.

Best thing to do is not worry about it. Let them crack on. You pay road tax, insurance etc so if you feel the roads are such that you travel slower than a car, then you carry on.
I get it all the time in the lorry with cars lining up behind me when I'm going down a narrow road with a wide load. I slow down, indicate left when I see an opportunity for the following cars to overtake. If they don't, then that's their problem, they can follow me indefinitely.
If someone is tailgating me in whatever vehicle I'm in I have a tendency to slow down even more.....in the interest of safety of course
