From Spain to Norway - the long way round

Just about where your first photo was taken we saw a pair of Sea Eagles, may have been on the outcrop in the photo.. We've got one flying around on the dashcam but no photo.. There were no other campers there 6 weeks ago and it was raining..

We saw an eagle circling over the cliffs behind where the vans are parked earlier today. Presume it was a sea eagle but only got a dark silhouette. Will be looking out for more tomorrow.

Impressed with your progress again, hopefully you have a north facing location

I have subscribed to aurora text alerts for high levels of solar activity which equate to good potential viewings of the northern lights well south of where you are now, so equally brilliant chance where you are

Just had a level 4 alert for 44 minutes from now, so quarter to eight UK time, not sure if you are the same

Possibly not dark enough though to see it well, but worth a look north around then (y)

interesting because they were only predicting a level 2 earlier

Thanks. Will be outside looking in 40 minutes time. Problem is the sun's still up at that time but they must know that .

Martin's subscribed to the site but he's not had an alert :(.

I have opted to receive texts for level 4 and above, for the Lofoten area you only need a level 2 (y)(y)

The texts are a chargeable option €4.99 / month, I hadn't realised how little strength was needed for a sighting above the arctic circle

what time does it go dark there?

still predicting level 3 for an hour from now :):)(y)(y)

Is it clear tonight? I hope we get this kind of start when we get there :):)

a proxy viewing will be much better than we have had so far (y)

I knew it was light a lot up there, but no idea it was still this light

You have virtually no chance of a sighting :(:(

but reducing at 10 minutes a day, so by the end of the month there is at least a much better chance (y)

In fairness these are for Tromso, so you are a few miles further south but must be pretty much the same

According to the tourist board it gets dark enough around 2nd or 3rd week in August

The tourist board would say that. Dont forget, even after sunset the sky is still light.

@DavidG58 You've answered your own question about when it goes dark here. We haven't seen any dark!!! We go to bed in daylight, even well after 11.00 pm. The sun's still coming in through the motorhome windscreen and dazzling me so I can't see my screen to type. Can't complain tho' it's better than rain.

Are you still going through be in the north in a couple of weeks?

We'll be fairly north for the next few weeks for sure as we've so much to see here. We have roughly to the end of September before we need to be heading back to the UK to collect our bikes and other bits and bobs. We have a ferry to Santander on 10 October. Nothing else is booked yet though so, fingers crossed, we get to see some "lights". Jan and Eli have even seen them in Bergen in the past.

absolutly stunning loving your trip, edit:just done a google maps to where you are, (y)

Just returned from our walk. The Queens Walk or "Dronningruta" in Norwegian. Queen Sonja enjoyed it so much in 1994 they renamed it.

Must admit its a fabulous route, though quite tough. We added a bit to it starting from the van (have to get our money's worth out of Norway!)

We had lunch on the beach and watched some brave people brave the water. They didn't stay in long!

How many hours did the walk take, Judith?

We set off from the van at 9.00 am stopped to take photos and to talk to some Aussies. We arrived back at 4.00 pm. We calculated that it took us 5 hrs 40 minutes to do the actual walk. A lunch break of about 50 minutes and the rest of the time frittered away taking photos, etc.

Andrea asks is it hot/cold or what

Thanks Judith loving the photos and chat!!

Andrea asks is it hot/cold or what

Today it's been warm but with a light breeze. Tee shirts and shorts weather. The same is forecast for the next few days. We feel so lucky to have this weather for our arrival in Norway. It would be nice to have it for all our trip but I thinks that's a bit too optimistic

Edit

Just looked up from typing and a sea mist has rolled in!!!

Left in thick mist but drove back into the sun. We wanted an easy day so Martin decided to have his first attempt (ever) at fishing. We stopped en route for Martin to speak to two workmen (orange jacketed) who were fishing next to their stationary digger! One of them pulled out a mackerel whilst we were watching, but it wasn't a good area to park so we carried on.

We were then on the southern most part of Langoya and stopped at the village of Sandnes. Below us, down a gravel road, was a small harbour, with a wall that, expert fisherman, Martin, said would be good for fishing from.

We drove downhill, checking out possible turning areas, then saw a big parking area behind some huts.

IMG_20170805_121810063.jpg

We had a stroll to the boats and the "fishing wall" and returned to the van. I found cleaning the bathroom of interest while Martin worked out how to use his fishing gear, purchased in Spain or France from Decathlon!

The Harbour Master, or whoever they are in such a small place, came to talk. Martin quizzed him about the fishing (as though he knew what he was talking about!). He told us the names of some fish!!! and said we could stay as long as we wanted. His dream was to make the area into a camping area and use one of the buildings for a kitchen/seating area. Stay for three weeks if you want, he said as he left!

Our van amongst the huts.

Martin left to go fishin'

IMG_20170805_125920821.jpg

He eventually caught a tiddler, but lost his (al)lure!

I was fascinated by a giant jelly fish. Sorry, no 50p for size, but it was about just under a metre across.

And the boats in the harbour.

It was too early to take up the offer to stay so we carried on to where we are now parked up for the night. Not many minutes from the small ferry Melbu to Fiskebøl and the start of the Lofotens!

I quickly posted the last post 'cos the internet is playing up. Were now parked up and, because there was no fish for dinner, we made a chorizo (from one of our events in Spain) lentil, carrot and potato one pot meal. This we've had with some Swedish flat bread.

I've had one of my gin allowances and Martin had a can of weak Swedish beer. I'm off down to the water soon, to see what i can see, but its grey (back in the mist) and feels like it will get dark tonight!

Hi Judith and Martin, we have just read your addictive adventure thread from the start to present time, fantastic really enjoying the journey so far, wonderful photos, (what camera are you using)? sometime in the near future we have a similar trip planned.
