From Spain to Norway - the long way round

Foggy start to the morning so we decided to continue travelling instead of walking in the Park. We're seriously considering coming back next year to do the O Ringen again and spend more time in Sweden so we'll be back in this area then.

We're now parked on a small harbour at a tiny place called Have. A French van has just pulled up next to us (rare sight here). We left in the fog and then drove all morning in beautiful sun until the last 30km when we hit fog again!

Our foggy overnight spot.

We're had a nice archaeological walk in the nearby forest. We've also had our first mozzie problem (only in the forest, not here on the harbour). The signs on the photos are self explanatory. It's all Bronze Age burials.

This used to be a pebble beach at sea level. The burials were on promontories overlooking the sea.

We've crossed the Arctic Circle today Phil @Scout. Slow internet so moving on to the largest town before the Norwegian border. Hopefully I'll be able to post a piccy.

We've entered Lapland and seen our first Rudolph's!!!

dont forget the food(y)(y)

Well we crossed the Polar Circle yesterday. Pretty underwhelming I thought. But we had a window of dry weather to get out for a piccie!

IMG_20170801_115227977.jpg

We continued crossing into Lapland and rain and of course reindeers!!! We had to stop three times to let them get out of the way on the road, they certainly weren't in a hurry.

IMG_20170801_145737135.jpg

We ended the day by driving about 150km more than intended. Places to stop were few (reminiscent of driving in the bush in Australia, but swap the Reindeer for Roos and the rain for sun) and the weather bad so stopping early wasn't an option. We've been using the Scandinavian Motorhome stops book and it has been excellent for Sweden but it let us down yesterday but Camper Contact came up trumps. (The book looks almost useless for Norway though).

It's 7 am here now and going to be on the road soon to cross the border. The rain's stopped!!! and no more forecast for the next week .

More photos later, slow internet here.

The Norway part of the book is useless... I'm sure less forests, have a look on Senja..

I agree with you and @jumartoo it requires you to have a detailed knowledge of the Norwegian regions to use that section of the book. We used campercontact and parked where the local vans stopped in Norway.

At least the reindeer are using the correct side of the road.

We're parked just on the Norwegian side of the border and not a border guard to be seen .... AND .... we didn't go too much over our allowance of alcohol, probably only a litre or so of wine and we so could have done . Never mind better for our livers!

We are here having coffee.

A bit of info for @DavidG58 there are roadworks on the E10 from Abisko towards Kaisepakte for about 20km off and on. When I say roadworks I mean the road has been taken away and a new one is in the process of being laid. There is a vehicle escort on one section, the rest you just have to slow down!!!

GREAT PICS but what about the food

Food, food, in Norway??? Need to see what money we have left at the end of the trip. This is not a Robert Clark thread you know. Definitely not eating sheep's heads tho!

I can cook some quick motorhome meals if you'd like to see one of them? Tonight's is something with chicken

just got our Norwegian Krone today, feel really rich, 19,000 of anything seems like we can have a ball :)(y)

Have you not read about the Norwegian Currency controls.. I thought the limit to bring in was 5000 NOK and similar to take out...

Best find somewhere to hide it....Best not say on here where though...

Only joking...or am I...

We were offered trans gender mussels when we were in Norway

Very cosmopolitan!

Well we're as far north in Norway as we're going to be and we've realised that even with the amount of time we have to do the trip we just cannot do everything and go everywhere. We've decided to find the best walks in each area and concentrate on planning a route around that.

So we called into Sortland Tourist Office this morning for walks on Langoya. We'd already highlighted the Queen's Route starting at the end of the road (last 9km gravel) at the tiny ex fishing village of Nyksund. So that's where we are now and hope to do the walk tomorrow.

Along the gravel road, the destination is in the distance.

We'd had a walk at Sortland before we arrived here so only needed to shower, wash a few things and eat.

We have German neighbours on our left (He speaks unaccented, English Gent, English. Studied at the London School of Economics many years ago, and then taught English). On our right we have a Brit couple, Northern Ireland male and English female), who are also intending to do the classic walk tomorrow.

The village was abandoned in the mid 1970's but has been repopulated with arty people and cafes.

We're parked overlooking a small bay and Martin keeps scanning with the bins' in case of animal life.
