The RAF were using these these to check for migrants across the channel for the last 18 months (I believe).


Maybe the French were doing something similar and decided those assets are better used in Eastern Europe and the Med for the time being, and asked the Italians for help through NATO.

Just been on the news we have at least two fully armed aircraft fifty miles from the Ukrainian border over Poland apparently

If aircraft are operating that close to a war zone I would expect them to be fully armed. If they had a sudden surprise attack they could hardly say 'Mr Attacker, would you mind hanging around for an hour while I return to base for some armament? Thanks very much, see you later'
