flightradar24

Of course we won't see all the flights that are out there but you still get an idea of what's going on. Those refuelling tankers are refueling something.
Agree they need to screen what is really going on but I am confused that they would still show the tankers obviously there for the reason for refuelling, or are they???. why not hide the tankers as well or are they indeed flying around in circle doing nothing...for some other alterier motive.
Double bluff per chance?????

if it’s a classified operation they won’t,,👍

Pure speculation here as I have no idea but would a bloomin big aircraft, full of aviation fuel in some other countries airspace be obliged to ping out its location for safety? Just to tell others to avoid that area.

I'm really not sure.

It not uncommon for any country to fly military aircraft above radar, this is purely to be seen,if these aircraft don’t want to be seen, they won’t be.

Maybe they not full of aviation fuel... maybe a decoy and the ones full and refuelling whatever are also hidden.
Far fetched... possibly.. but who knows what goes on in these dire times

Ask what?
It’s been happening for years, that many countries will fly “ghost aircraft” over foreign territories, just for the pure reason they known that they are there. 👍

US F16 Fighting Falcon multi-combat aircraft popped up after midair refuel over Romania, heading North Eastwards, before disappearing again.

I think there are a few reasons for leaving the transponders on for tankers and reconnaissance planes.
  1. Firstly, it psychologically supports to the narrative of NATO being prepared for any incursions into partner territories.
  2. Secondly, it creates a hell of a lot of little distractions for the antagonists - Russia and Belarus might not be scared of NATO, but having to keep track of all of the planes will be taking up effort that could otherwise be focussed on Ukraine
  3. Lastly, they're bloody big dangerous tubes in the sky full of aviation fuel, so kind of polite to keep them visible to reduce the risk of any mishaps

The meeting of 2 Stratotankers. Must be refuelling something?
US F16s out of Aviano, Italy and UK Typhoons out of Cyprus have been taking turns patrolling over Romania for the last few days at least, if not before.

The US carrier USS Harry S. Truman is still in the Ionian Sea tucked in-between Italy and Greece and I imagine some of their air group has also been getting involved.

A C17 went from Brize Norton to Warsaw last night at about 11pm...
I wonder what that was carrying?? Potatoes I think.....!

One for the carrier nerds (like me)

Grumman C2 Greyhound just taken off from Sigonella, Sicily. Looks like it might be delivering something to/from the USS Harry S Truman

I guess it’s potentially possible, but as far as I understand it, ADSB relies on lots of little receivers, even receivers based on peoples houses, so you’d have to compromise multiple different receivers for it to be effective.

There’s also the consideration that no military in their right mind will trust public data unless it can be verified by their own sensors, radar, AWACS etc.

Presumably no Russian military aircraft will show up
I've never seen actual combat craft but there was a Russian Air Force plane being watched from Moscow to Minsk yesterday. Some thought it was a delegation going to prepare for these cease fire talks that may or may not happen.

‘no call sign’ US military aircraft out of Lossiemouth fishing about in the North Sea off Netherlands. P8 Poseidon anti-submarine/shipping interdiction?

One of the USAF F16s over Romania has been leaving it’s transponder on. Looks like the scribbles my 4 yr old daughter makes

I was thinking more of propaganda for public consumption. Making us follow a drone going one way when in truth it’s transponder is off and it’s doing something deniable elsewhere.

I guess that's somewhat similar to what's been going on over the last few weeks.

Apparently the Global Hawks have been up over Ukraine for the last 2 years, but turning the transponders on recently for the FORTE flights added some more propaganda to the mix, focusses everyone's attention. Meanwhile who knows what else is up watching/listening the other side.

I think there are 20+ of the latest Block 40 Global Hawks operational, only a few have become internet famous :giggle:
