Fined after taking Chausson for hab check & service

I have recently recieved an email from gov.uk reminding me that my moho MOT expires next month, and that I can get a test done from now up to the 21st Feb.
i had the same text message and when phoned they said it is ok to travel to the mot station if pre booked

So the general consensus on here then is you can take the Motorhome instead of the car for a local essential shopping trip?

Well I had a funny noise coming from the back brakes of the car, so next time we go to the supermarket I think it would be best to take the MH, just in case there is a fault with the brakes on the car, potentially causing an accident. Don't you agree Officer ? I intend to look at the brakes on the car asap, but right now I need our weekly shopping.

I like to think I do everything to the letter, but people including me around here would never think of the rules on transport we just jump in anything available and go pretty much where we like, masks and stuff yeah but whats the difference what motor you are in.

Go to Asda ever week in ours. The van is parked in front of the garage, car in the garage, easier to pick up the keys to our van and use that.

Also used it for a 400 mile round trip to Lincolnshire to pick up the Grandkids, as we are in their care bubble with no family nearby. We took the van as we have a toilet, so no need to stop at any Services. Both parents Keyworkers.

You can anywhere you like, as long as you put a suitable sign on the back

Lots of comments about 'essential' travel, but the legislation simply says 'reasonably necessary'. It also goes on to describe which businesses are open which includes vehicle repairers and MOT services. A further reasonable excuse for being away from your home is to comply with a legal obligation, which an MOT is. I am aware the original post did not claim to be travelling for an MOT but subsequent posts have expressed concerns about taking vehicles for MOT.
Most confusion persists with the constant mix and match discussions about guidance and law. Prosecutions only follow from breaches of law, not breaches of guidance.

I think the OP's journey (about 150 miles?) was seen as not essential as it was for a service and hab check, but if he'd been going shopping fairly locally or returning with the week's groceries I doubt he'd have been fined for breaking the law.

I can just picture the scene as you turn up on a Nuffield at Asda,:giggle::giggle::giggle:(y)(y)

Mine is booked for a cambelt & waterpump change next week, better take the back roads

As our MH is due for a MOT and sorned, rang them and was told it was legal drive to the garage 6 miles round trip. While it was sorned. So long as you travelled straight there and back.

For an MOT yes but OP was going for a hab check and service..?????
Sorry not personally OP but someone on another forum as stated by OP. 😎

Whilst the original story sounds a bit fishy and whilst I agree it was a non essential journey, I am surprised that the police didn't use the first 3 of the 4 Es (Engage, Explain, Encourage, Enforce).....unless the MH owners aren't giving the full story

I think you've hit the nail on the head there, IMO this is either fake news or we are getting only part of the story

You could always tax it on your phone after it has passed it’s test. Before driving home. This would keep you completely legal.

If they only got told off I doubt we'd be reading about it and reinforcing the Essental Travel Only message.

IMO £200 wasn't enough. We should be threateneing to impound vehicles too. No mixed messsaging, nothing hard to understand, Essential Travel Only
Hey Jim. You sound like you could be a magistrate over here. You would be seen as lenient! They would probably have got a month in prison here :party3:

That's the sort of attitude that causes the virus to spread. Oh, it's only me, it'll be ok, not doing much, can twist the truth to suit, it could wait but I don't want to........times a few hundred thousand such non-essential activities and the rest of us are left in the mire. MOT can fit until there is a prospect of using the vehicle, you may as well save on road tax as well and declare SORN.

Our leaky Chausson is due to go in soon for repairs (luckily only 7 miles not 75), think I'd better check that it's ok to take it there. The habitation check was due last April, we finally had it done in September, nice dealers backdated it to August and no problem from Chausson about delay.
Think one of the biggest spreaders is people shopping etc without washing their hands..Stood waiting outside our local Coop yesterday waiting for the wife to pick up our milk and bread.Three people visited the cash machine,,,no gloves,no sanitizing the buttons and then entered Coop to shop and walked straight past the sanitizing station..At least another four during the same period walked into the shop without sanitizing,,What is wrong with these people? We wash our hands going in and coming out and then again when we get home.I wont visit the dustbin without washing my hands when back in the house,,,BUSBY.

So now I am worried about my MOT for my motorhome . I guess I shouldn’t take it to the garage now but if they are open then i would have thought this was ok . Confused now .
The Govt website says book your MOT as usual. There's no extension this time around.

AT LAST...

I have always considered a "habitation check" to be non essential (have never had one ever) and now I find Mr Plod agrees with me.

JJ
Yes. Why should we be handcuffed to having to have Hab services to keep our warranties

So what about using moho (we do also have car) for essential Tesco shopping. Surely what defines what an essential vehicle is what you are useing it for I.e. essential shopping. As appose to a car is essential vehicle but a moho is not.???
Duh. What are you trying to say? That you haven't got any alternative transport and your moho is your only vehicle? Then fine, go shopping in it. It seems from the OP that if you choose to use your moho you may find yourself being stopped and questioned at the very least so if you have a car and want to avoid a chat with a bored traffic cop, use it. Essential = no choice, not your choice.

How many times does this need explaining? It's the journey that needs to be essential, not the vehicle you do that journey in.

Thanks for this warning, it is a good reminder for being safe and sensible, it's so easy to get complacent as things drag on, please stay safe and be sensible everyone, my elderly Dad's life is at risk along with millions of others. :h:
