EU driver slapped with London emissions fines totalling £25,000

We have a nanny state in every area. You only have to look at the all-encompassing welfare system that dishes out cash for practically anything. The continent seems to take a more 'personal responsibility' approach. There thing that always strike me over there are the rail tracks without any fencing. Imagine doing that over here?

I was thinking we'd be better of like the Nordic countries much more of a welfare state than us.

We need more of a welfare for those who need it and we need to end the ridiculous practice of giving the wealthy expenses etc .
It never ceases to amaze me that people not in the position grudge and detest giving £80 a week to someone unemployed to survive on but are happy to give someone with £700 million in the bank £152k extra to help him get to work.

People seem blind to this.

I can't imagine any political party getting elected on a promise of higher taxes.

And that's the problem. Keep creating wealth and millionares and allow them to control the media and you'll never remove the government that supports them. But at the minute there are more working class people than there are millionares. The people have to just wake up and vote the scumbags out regardless of what engineered crap they come up with to divide people between now and the next election.

Because you can be sure there will be plenty lies and created criseses thought up before the next one to suck in the gullible

We can't afford it
That's the biggest con yet. Scrap the likes of hs2 etc and supporting the never ending war in Ukraine which has sod all to do with us and there is plenty money to fix all the issues in the UK.

They just don't want to

Surely all these Lez’s are all about making money. Chatting with a mate who lives in Middlesex, if I visit in my 1.4 diesel £20 per year ved it will cost £12.50 to enter. His 5.0 litre petrol Range Rover £650 per year ved is compliant. Crazy.

It's purely about money. If it was for the environment they would simply ban non compliant vehicles. The money can't buy patches for the alleged ozone layer.

Everything they do is about money 💰 it's what drives them

That's what the government want you to believe.

They found the money for hs2. And the money to give to their mates for ppe etc, the current clown in charges wife does business with Russia lol .

If we want good services and save the NHS etc the answer is simple

People in England need to drop the tory/Labour debate grow up and elect a different party for a change. Until they do the country is going to continue on its downward spiral to hell . Taking the other 3 nations with it.

I can only assume its because they have better governments or citizens with more backbone who don't stand by and let the government remove all their power.

They've made it harder to protest. Harder to vote and now want to make it harder to strike.. and the sad thing is they have the backing of a majority of sheep

So why do they need to do anything different, brits just complain but in the end they just accept it
I fecking give up Tam. I am sick of the lot of them, just tell me who you want me to vote for ;)(y)

Problem in England is you're kind of limited , Labour and tory are the same . Lib dems are a weaker tory . The greens are insane , so maybe just revert back to big ears in the Palace and make him work for his dinner.

Wheres guy fawkes when you need him

So ban all cars but I bet there will be a bigger outcry.

You really dont see how funding the Ukraine to fight an inevitable war is a better idea than us and US gaving to tackle it? I feel very sorry for the Ukrainians - rock and a hard place!

Nope...no one wins a war , they're now even suggesting Ukraine attempts to take back crimea, instead of continuing to supply weapons etc and watching more and more destruction that's going to cost billions to rebuild there should be more attempts at talking.

But let's face it like covid there are companies making a lot of money from this war while once again the mugs are suffering from it by increased living costs , fuel costs etc etc

It's mental how no one ever learns from the past

I would normally agree but in this case the western world could very well come out as winners as long as we don't get pulled in to actually fighting it.

I wonder if this is a record for thread drift - What was it about again? Foreign taxi drivers getting clobbered by Kahns London transport slush fund........

I think properly managed we could. Norway has huge amounts of oil and hydroelectric but not Sweden and Denmark. They have very good welfare states and education their economy seems to be doing pretty well.

Here's a brief summary https://www.investopedia.com/terms/n/nordic-model.asp#:~:text=The Nordic model, also known,Finland, Denmark, and Iceland.
The standard of living in the Nordic countries is far higher than here, incomes are much higher and so are the taxes. For as long as I can remember we have been a low pay workforce, now it's biting us, as however low we keep our pay the Chinese and others can be lower. Unless we can get better and match the productivity of other countries we are doomed to second class life.

Totally agree. I think it goes back for years over all governments none of them have any interest in the long term health of the economy they're just interested in as far as the next election. In the Nordic countries there seems to be no idea that rich people need tax cuts to stimulate the economy why do people fall for it here?

Someone should tell Putin this is not a winner for him or anyone, someone should have played Edwin Star to him

The aristicrats, both born to it and the 'self made', used to get rich by robbing other countries and oppressing their population. They cannot do that now so have done the same to the UK population. Our rulers descend from the Norman invaders.

The outcome of Mayor Khan's policies aimed at reducing the number of private cars and vans in London (eventally to zero) will be more people on precarious low incomes working in the gig economy, especially cycle delivery and cargo bikes replacing small vans and light trucks. In Paris, which is only a year or two ahead of London when it comes to this big change to the way major cities operate, the transformation is remarkable. Yet there are big downsides as well as benefits (for some of the middle class in the most prosperous zones who apparently love this because their kids can play safely in their pedestrianised residential street). This is a story I picked up from my online feed (my emphasis in bold):

"In the park at Les Halles, I met Ibrahim Souaré next to his cargo tricycle. The 23-year-old delivers groceries for a third-party contractor that works with Monoprix, a kind of French Kmart. Like most delivery workers I spoke to, Souaré said he used and appreciated the city’s bike infrastructure. Still, finishing the route isn’t the whole job. Many clients, he’s noticed, live on the high floors of buildings without elevators. Sometimes it feels as if his work is as much about carrying things up the stairs as getting them to people’s front doors.

The good parts of the job include flexibility, independence, and being outside (except when it rains). On the other hand, Souaré makes a little over a thousand euros a month—well below the French minimum wage—and there is no hope of a raise. He lives with roommates in Bobigny, a suburb northeast of Paris and one of the poorest communities in France. It’s hard work being on a bicycle seat all day. On his days off, he said, he rests up for the next shift. “When you’re an immigrant,” he said, “you’ve got to work. You want to eat? You don’t want to sleep outside? It’s obligatory.”

His is a profile that’s representative of the shift in bicycle delivery, which, until recently, was more or less thought of as a fun job for young people who liked riding bikes. Now it’s a grueling, algorithm-driven trade practiced almost exclusively by recent immigrants, with routes that can lead all over town. Even in a city famous for its public life, delivery is now ubiquitous. Couriers with rented e-bikes and insulated bags from Picard (the frozen supermarket) zoom down the new bike lanes.

Circé Lienart, who runs Maison des Coursiers, a city-funded resource center for delivery workers, in Paris’ Barbès neighborhood, estimates that 2 in 3 delivery couriers do not have French working papers. The companies that employ them have been caught up in repeated scandals over legal workers farming out their accounts to their undocumented counterparts, often for a fee. That precarity is linked to poor working conditions. In addition to low pay, workers receive no bonus for bad weather and don’t get a minimum salary when business is slow. Their status is vulnerable to the whims of a restaurant or a customer, who can push their rating down with a click.

In a study of more than 800 Parisian delivery workers published last fall, researchers found that more than 9 in 10 are men. More than 8 in 10 were born abroad. Most are under 30. More than half ride bikes, with a third on mopeds and a few in cars. Most worry about the danger of traffic. In all these respects, Monoprix delivery worker Souaré—who arrived in France from Conakry, Guinea, three years ago—is typical. And in one more: 2 in 3 survey respondents told the researchers they had held the job for less than a year. Souaré is at eight months."

If a boom in cycle delivery by recent immigrants who get exploited shamelessly isn't happening already in London it is only a matter of time.

But if you have crap funding even the best run service will be poor. None of the politicians are honest on that

Makes you wonder how some private firms manage a good service on a shoe string then 🤷‍♂️

Oh yes they have people invested in it to make it good.

Which private firms are you thinking of that are a size to run public services?. And don't say sub it out look how well that generally works.

Where I live primary healthcare has been outsourced to Virgin Healthcare.

I do also think part of our probably start at school, in years gone by those with no interest in education or getting a good job could find factory work or similar. Not the best jobs but it paid enough to live on. Now the only jobs available to those with no qualifications are minimum wage warehouse type jobs which don't pay enough to pay rent and live, so these people are better off not working and claiming benefits. The single simple thing that could be done is lower benefits and higher minimum wage which would encourage people to work.

What all of it or just the straightforward cases and the local NHS picking up the complications ( because thats the usual experience in Leicester and Middlesbrough)

I think keep both where they are and make people work for benefits. The problem with a high minimum wage is it encourages exactly what you've said people not bothering in education as they're still going to earn fairly well anyway.
