Doc on tour, France, Spain, Morroco.

Interestingly Tam, I seem to recall Carcasonne was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century, pretty much from ruins. I’m not completely sure but it might be worth looking into given your thoughts on Oradour. Of course the key thing is it’s not a memorial site for mass murder, maybe that makes a difference?
I said to Gary earlier that most of France was flattened during the war so I'm aware of that.

The difference being the memorial site is uninhabited and was meant to be left as it was after the massacre. Not staged and bits being rebuilt

So of course it makes a difference.

I only raise it because I find my own attitude somewhat contradictory. I am a part time historian and although I thought Carcasonne was a fabulous place, I also found myself tutting and thinking it is a bit of a Disneyland and nothing like the original city (so I understand). Whereas I think Oradour should be maintained although I agree as it was left not with sewing machines moved et cetera.

I think it might be that the French refer to the old city when it’s actually Victorian and parts of the main town are older. Can’t even explain my own opinions really!

Anyway, I didn’t mean to hijack your thread and start another debate, apologies

Looks so much better at night without truck loads of people. Be better if there were some dogs in it😀.

Earlier this year we spent winter in Spain using mainly p4n. The free version. We also have the 'all the aires books'. But most of them are on p4n too.

I couldn't believe the amount of ice cream shops etc still open despite there being no one around , we saw maybe a dozen other people but at 7° outside I doubt anyone would be buying ice cream . Seems mental to still be open

Will go back in for a look around tomorrow with the mutts

I wasn't sure if I'd been here before or not but don't think I have.

I loved my splittys, bays and wedges for their off road capabilities, went absolutely everywhere and anywhere in all weathers , Had a few syncro t25 caravelles too that were great machines .
My VW was great in sand and snow. Here in central Saudi Arabia.

You should come to the car boot sale round here on a Sunday ... it can be zero degrees and they still buy ruddy ice cream! :giggle:

Ok ,so you just want a stop for the night, might be one around the corner with no facilities but if you have a filter that says it's got to have emptying, it won't tell you it's there, what goods that.?
Read what I said ... we can use the filters to look for what we want at the time we want it ... we often do services between night stops:

We have the paid version and hubby finds it useful for weeding out some of the crappy stops with really low ratings, many of which are only capable of accommodating a single VW type low top or those with 4x4s! He also finds the filters good for narrowing down to just include aires with disposal facilities (black & grey waste) and/or fresh water when en route to other places, saves a lot of time manually going through them. For the small cost of the app we'll keep paying especially as the little we pay will go towards keeping it going, if everyone only had the free version it could well end up crappy.

If we want a stop for a night obviously we can set the filters for that ... we've had some lovely ones with no facilities whatsoever in great places.

As with all 'tools' you have to know how to use them to get the best out of them.  :blusher:

I have trouble accepting it wasn't build by Disney. 😊

The whole point of filters is that you set them to display only the things you need/want. If you need/want an aire with services then you have no interest in aires without services.

If you are looking for a simple stopover you would set the filters accordingly (e.g. to omit campsites).

I love good ice cream and would eat it no matter the temperature outside :)
I love ice cream but brrrr too cold to walk around with it.

I might get one today though , although very very difficult to eat with 4 dogs

You need 5 ice creams then.

We always had to buy 6, one each for us and the kids then the 6th for the dog. She didn't like mint or cherry.

I can't say I've ever felt the need to use a paid version .

The free one has never failed to find me somewhere. Yes there's a few places on it that shouldn't be or are completely unsuitable for my size of van etc but that's not an issue. I just find an alternative which there always is.

It's the most popular and used app. I can't recall ever meeting anyone on my travels that doesn't use it and I've only ever heard one other app used and that was ioverlander which is good for places outwith Europe, georgia, Azerbaijan etc
Let's be honest here, the P4N app does not cost €1.000 does it. And think of all the work that goes into making an app as useful as this one. Come on guys, pay for it, you'll still be able to afford the diesel and LPG that you need.

You've got to do a video of you attempting to eat an ice cream with the dogs. I'd pay to see that ::bigsmile:. Especially if Garry was going past you all.

Better still whilst the drone was up. Although we like France. It ain't cheap any more.

No 🤷‍♂️

Because I don't need it

The free one has adverts on that are paying for it. But why do we need to pay for an inferior product, as I said it's not the cost as I in fact paid for it for two years but just couldn't get on with it.

But why do we need to pay for an inferior product
How is the product inferior if it has extra functionality that the free product doesn't? The users inability to operate the extra functionality doesn't mean that the product is inferior, it means the user either doesn't need the extra functionality or can't understand how to use it to best suit them.
