Do you let your Dog run without a lead?

We are both from farming background and conservation. ANYONE who lets there dog off a lead, should be ..... It's irresponsible to others walking, wildlife and farm animals. Leaving your gog s...t is just as bad and I do not even like the long leashes

Why arnt farm dogs kept on leads?

Do farm dogs have designated areas at the farm to crap?

I do agree long leashes should be banned, spawn if the devil 😡

Depends on the situation if our Patterdale is on the lead.
She has no interest in livestock or horses etc.
Recall is good for a terrier as well 😊

Mmm. Some strong views from the anti dog brigade. I wouldn’t have a dog if I couldn’t let him have a run.
We cancelled planning our trip to Norway when we found out that our dog would have to be on the lead all of the time.
I do spend a lot of time training Rufus. However, he is a young dog.
I wouldn’t let him off the lead near livestock or in sensitive areas during the breeding season. Other places I will let him have a run.

As I said earlier it’s only the cyclists that need to be told !

All boils down to "this crowded isle" and Covid

Lots of folk got pups during lockdown, lots more folk discovered their local countryside.
Untrained dogs + inattentive owners* = increase in anti dog brigade.

My personal recent experience - plenty of space across the fields of Lincolnshire but in a country park in the Wirral... omg, so many dogs!

*walking in the beautiful British countryside staring at their phone .

Why is it remotely acceptable to leave your bag of dog poo hanging from a branch to be collected later? Take it with you, it’s your Dog’s mess, your responsibility. Stop spoiling it for the rest who don’t appreciate natures finest being adorned with bags of sh1t.
I do NOT hang it from a branch, it is placed at the side of the footway so as not to be kicked but can be seen so I remember to collect it on my way back.

Life's to short to complain about mud on your pants whilst out walking.
Oh dear so you’re out walking a Dog runs up and jumps in you, in no way shape or form is that acceptable. If you out walking and get mud on you that’s one thing but an excitable out of control pooch needs training along with its owner.

My dog hates cycles. When I see them on SHARED pathways I have him close to me so that he is unable to do anything but bark at them. But when we are on the same SHARED pathways and they ride like like they are on the TDF with no notice then it it harder to keep him close.

Maybe SHARED space means nothing to them but it does to me. Bells? Not needed apparently. Simple common sense and decency to slow down and assess the hazard ahead also seem to be alien.

I ride a motorcycle. I drive a car. I drive a van. I drive a Moho - all of which require looking ahead and assessing the potential hazard. I ride a cycle too. And I use the same skills and look out for possible dangers. Dogs and Horses are potential hazards.

But when you have watched the mountain bike riding guys cutting close to horses you have to wonder where their brains are, possibly in their arses judging by the bulging lycra...

So to answer the OP. I keep my dog on a short lead most of the time. On dog fields he can run and do whatever comes into his head. I also let him off on the beach especially locally when the tide is out and the summer restrictions aren't in place.

Agreed
There are few things worse than sitting in a nature reserve, dressed in camouflage, for hours waiting for a a photo of a target species, only to have an ill-trained mutt bound through the undergrowth and flush every living creature.
though I don’t wear camo, no need for Otters just dark clothing and keeping still.

There are way too many 'Dogs must be on a lead' signs dotted around the countryside - often for no real reason. What's wrong with the 'Dogs must be under control' version? This makes more sense and doesn't penalise those owners who have well-trained dogs.
Some people don’t understand how to control their dogs, hence the lead

I am not anti dog, but I am anti thoughtless/careless dog owners who think they are entitled to let their dogs roam where they want.

Is that for ALL dogs or just your particular dog breed? We're planning on going there but this could cause us a serious re-think.

All breeds between April 1 and August 20th I think

What I struggle with here is why is anyone walking if they don't have a dog?
Similar to why are you riding a bike if you are not going to work/shop?
I walk because the dog needs to, not because I want to,nor because i even like it.:cry:In fact I'm the last person in the world you want to speak to if you see me walking cause i won't be happy.
Why would you start an argument with someone who A) doesn't like walking,B) doesn't want to actually be there , C) is mentally unbalanced & D)is carrying a bag of dog shite ?

I hate that on my early morning run
:doh:I saw what you did there.

Many do unfortunately, but why leave it lying around can’t you take it with you? There’s enough litter left around as it is without temporarily adding to it.

Lycra on a mountain bike, no one I ride with or seen wears Lycra.

That’s mainly roadies.

Which is why any sensible system of signage would say 'under control'. Those who can't control their dogs by voice alone should use a lead. Those that can should be allowed to do so.

Some people don't understand how to control their alcohol intake. Does that mean the rest of us shouldn't be allowed to drink?

I spent a few years as a volunteer ranger on an RSPB site. During the breeding season dogs were required to be on a lead. There are good reasons for this. You wouldn’t believe how many dog owners thought that the rules didn’t apply to them for all sorts of reasons. The rules applied to all, as I said for good reasons.

Dogs off leads are welcome in Norwegian areas set aside for their exercising. yy

Yes I read that, but how do you find them? I haven't done any property planning for it yet so not looked into it.

.I think we should start another cyclist thread🙄
Or smokey BBQ or noisy kids, or loud radio/TV, or noisy flags, people who walk nearly on your pitch. Trust me, there will always be someone who has an axe to grind and it will invariably be about something they don't have or don't do.

No because we don’t go running around chasing and disturbing the wildlife and crapping everywhere, or maybe so when we are drunk 😝
