Do you let your Dog run without a lead?

I always have Cassie in sight but always make a point of picking up any poo that has been left by others if I see it, seems the right thing to do. Needless to say she does not jump up and has excellent recall, essential training for any dog off lead. She definitely wouldn’t get enough exercise stuck next to me all the time!

No poop bothers me personally i even like the smell of some like horse, pig, cow, but dog cat and human honks like the depths of hell ,when im clearing it up thank god for latex gloves or plastic bags, but the horse etccbothers me not🥸

The land owner can already.

The PR for a wildlife trust, an animal charity shooting pet dogs would be catastrophic, and the burden of proof is on the shooter, dead blooded sheep, aborted lambs etc, irrefutable proof

Confronted by an angry dog owner pointing at an empty moorland with a dead dog in the middle saying “the dogs scared the birdies away’ is likely to get more wildlife trust staff battered around the head with their own shot guns

Conservationists? Shouldn’t be trusted with anything, let alone a shotgun in a public place
I did say the comment was controversial, all it takes is for dog owners to place a lead on between the months of March and July isn’t asking a lot is it.

There are way too many 'Dogs must be on a lead' signs dotted around the countryside - often for no real reason. What's wrong with the 'Dogs must be under control' version? This makes more sense and doesn't penalise those owners who have well-trained dogs.

Reasons you may not understand such as ground nesting birds that you cannot see. What is wrong with asking people to keep the pooch under control.

Unfortunately like a lot of things not everyone has a well trained dog so the majority are penalised as well.

Thank you. But my dog still isn’t infested in old men or their trousers.
Good to hear your dog isn’t infested with old men.

Don’t take it personally, you may have a perfectly trained dog but there are many other owners who do not.

There are no bad dogs, only bad dog owners.
Having a dog jump up scratching my legs and making me muddy is annoying, a glib owner saying he only wants to be friendly, he wont hurt you is total lack of respect to other people, in the case if my wife who has very sensitive and painfull legs it is excruciating for her. Dogs are generaly intelligent and most can be trained to behave.

The first thing to do is shoot all the members of the kennel club who thrive on forcing people to have highly interbread hybrid dogs that are highly strung stupid and have short lives and suffer badly with masses of health problems, and encourage people to have good old heinz 57 dogs that are intelegent wonderfull pets and have long healthy lives.

No mention of the amount of wildlife a domestic moggie will kill or the toxic waste they leave all over the gardens and borders? Just trying for balance and as for those stupid extending leads..........................when you cant get past on your bike, have I covered all areas?:giggle:

Ive nothing against them running free as such
But how do owners know where their dogs have defeacated?
In my case I don’t take my eyes of them until they have done it, usually within the first ten minutes of going out, it is then bagged and hanging on a connection on the lead until I come to a bin, the vast majority of dog owners are responsible it’s just a few that give us a bad name.

could substitute motorhomers for dogs in that last sentence In a few threads on here!

Talking of bikes, I use a walkway which is also used by walkers, joggers, horse riders and cyclists, there is a sign at the beginning telling cyclists to go slowly and give way to all others. My two dogs are off lead but will immediately call them in and put the leads on if I see a horse rider approaching, joggers/cyclists coming towards me then the dogs are called to the side until the pass so as not to get in the way, I’m always looking over my shoulder for cyclists but often they approach at speed with no warning and disregard for others.

That's my whole point! There is nothing wrong with asking people to keep their dog under control. There is quite a lot wrong with insisting that all dogs must be on a lead even though they are perfectly under their owner's control off it. 'Under control' means just that - if you can't keep your dog under control, then it must be on a lead.

Often see dogs unpredictably wandering into the paths of cyclists, had many near misses. Those extendable leads are even worse though.
We walk in the New Forest regularly and there are ground nesting birds and notices for dog owners to keep dogs on leads, but clearly most can’t read and think they know better.
Walking through a field recently where a herd of cows all sat down but suddenly spooked as 2 large dogs came racing in. The cows all leapt up in panic running in all directions. It was terrifying as we were halfway across the field and had to make a dash for it. A minute later their jogging owners reached the field. We expressed our anger but didn’t seem too fussed, no apology.

Kerry is never off the lead [except in a designated enclosed exercise area] so I can be a smug git on this topic...
smug top gear GIF

...except I do use one of the extending leads [in a very responsible way of course] so some will still hate me 🤷‍♂️ .

I spoke to a walker about that when I found a little bag of joy tied up and placed in the lane just in-front of my door…apparently the dog had done it’s bit, owner very rightly bagged it then she said she left it there so she could pick it up on the way back…she didn’t appear to realise how thoughtless she’d been.
Was it actually directly outside your door so you couldn't exit without having to step over it or a distance away from it? Without knowing that it's impossible to say if she was being truly thoughtless or whether you just didn't want it placed there as it offended you.
i wasn’t too impressed and said it would have been better her just putting it in my bin, which was on the side of the lane about 3m away from said deposit.
If someone stuck something in MY bin without asking I'd be peed off, if she'd done this would you have been out and complaining about that?
I then made the point. Picked it up and threw it in the bin.
Your bin, your choice.
maybe the hedge bags are either…’a’, can’t be arsed so I’ll throw it in the hedge or ‘b’, I’ll hang it on a branch and I’ll see it and pick it up later. Either way, crap!
A. Is wrong, but B isn't, we often do this on walks as we return the same way so collect it then and dispose of it.

Hi.
Warning Portugal.All wooded areas.
I have mentioned before about the Wild Pigs, there is a herd uses the river bank wooded area just down the lane ( and our land ) as a M/way. They can and will Attack you if threatened, especially if they are with piglets. Be prepared to let your dog " OFF " the lead ( If on it ) if threatened,as they see the dog as the greatest threat.
Hunting/Shooting the pigs happens Sunday and Wednesday ? Not sure about Wed. as it stopped while the Covid was about, there ARE warnings about these areas,but.................... Don't wander in by mistake.
Just a Tip :ROFLMAO: . If out walking in the countyside/woods etc anywhere. Do NOT wear an Anorak type coat. MOST dogs will associate this coat with its side pockets as a Mobile Treat unit and will come up to you and start to " Forage ? :ROFLMAO: " in your pockets.
Tea Bag.
PS " Forage/pockets ? .". With or without a lead on.. Walkies...;)

It’s not about the dogs, it’s about ignorant people.

I never let mine off the lead to run except in a field that is meant for that purpose. They are run on a lead daily and stay by my side.

I also pick up the poop and take it home.

I am in a minority. The worst thing about having a dog is other dog owners, letting their dogs bound around mine and me, leaving crap everywhere and generally being inconsiderate people.

Should all dogs be on leads in public, yes IMHO.

We met four hikers in a local wood, dogs did run to them and jump up.
Bare in mind they all looked the part in their proper hiking gear, they complained the dogs had put mud all over their nice clean trousers and socks.
God help them had they been walking the heather moors and fell in a concealed mud bog.

Whether the dog is on a lead or not, inattentive owners are the problem, walking dogs whilst on the phone, not looking at what dog is doing, means they walk on ahead of the dog and the dog craps on path or pavement and just as worse, poo bags hung from trees and bushes.
Whilst wildlife watching I have been accosted by numerous dogs off leads, one Labrador tried to hump me whilst I was sat behind my tripod and 500mm lens, the only way I could remove him was to punch him on the snout, (not happy doing that to a dog). The owner wasn’t interested and just got annoyed with dog because it would not return to her. I didn’t see another Otter that day so really pissed off.🤨🤨
There are few things worse than sitting in a nature reserve, dressed in camouflage, for hours waiting for a a photo of a target species, only to have an ill-trained mutt bound through the undergrowth and flush every living creature.

I've seen similar signs in the UK where footpaths cross fields with cows & their calves.

Here's a stat to chew the cud:
Between 2001 and 2021, the average number of dog-related deaths in England and Wales was 3.3 per year. 7 Feb 2023
According to the latest available figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) 32 people were killed by cows between 2018 and 2022

There's nothing better than a walk in the country side or woods with my dog. She loves all the different smells and likes to track the rabbit runs etc. In Newark last year we stumbled across a fox and her 2 cubs taking a drink from a pond and playing in the mud it was magical. I was caught between getting my camera out or hastily putting my dog on her lead. I put the dog on her lead as being half dashund she would of approached the foxes and probably not of come back in one piece. The mother fox gathered her cubs and went a different way and gave me an almost respectful stare. It is a magical photo engrained in my memory. I keep a close eye on her and she on me. I always pick up her crap and take it back to camp. However I'm more aware of this complaining culture, live and let live I believe. Life's to short to complain about mud on your pants whilst out walking.

Why is it remotely acceptable to leave your bag of dog poo hanging from a branch to be collected later? Take it with you, it’s your Dog’s mess, your responsibility. Stop spoiling it for the rest who don’t appreciate natures finest being adorned with bags of sh1t.
