Do women drive motorhomes that often, if not why not?

Years ago I drove our first campervan all over, now I won't even drive the car.

Too many years of being the navigator/passenger!

See a lot of women MH drivers.
Our van is a lefty which shouldn’t be a problem but seeing as it’s our home I loose confidence as soon as I get in the driving seat specially as he’s watching every move!

I'm sure it would be like riding bike, you never forget, have a go in a quiet area and you may find its like you never stopped driving it ;)

My Princess Yodeli drives her motorhome and car.

Actually Lewis Hamilton contacted my people asking to be reassured that Frankie wouldn't be driving for Ferrari next season.

Apparently if she joins them Lewis would retire as he knows he would have no chance against her...

For any ladies out there who would love to drive their vans, the C&MHC do courses. Christmas present perhaps?

My wife doesn’t drive ours and isn’t insured to do so. She is not a confident driver at the best of times, and will only drive the car over known routes.
By not having her as an insured driver on the motorhome, the theory is we will get repatriated if I’m beggered when abroad......that’s the theory anyway, hope we never have to find out!

I really want her to drive as it is so tiring for me to be the only one, We've driven 30000 on this one and many before on the old one. BUT she will not sit in the seat let alone drive it. She had IAM qualification on both car and bike used to own a long wheelbase transit and has driven a double decker years ago. Drive the Hymer, automatic as well, no bloody chance. If I sell it it will be because she will not drive it.

Do you need new specs I wonder! Lots of women drivers around and I'm happy to be one.

Must admit I don’t like driving the motorhome, I just do it now and again to keep my hand in and give hubby a break. But I don’t like driving the car either and do miles for work. Think I just like being chauffeured around and day dreaming really!

EXACTLY... it's the comments from the "husbands" that sap the confidence.

I'm the same , I don't even drive the car if we're together. On my own, no problem.

BUT, to drive the motorhome I'd need help for the first few occasions, but that's not goin' to 'appen!!! (Unless in an absolute emergency, and the insurance fail us)!!!
My missus is the biggest back seat driver going... on every journey she comments on something driving related... it’s hard wired.

Ask yourself, do you ever do that and if so flip the situation around, is it any different?

By the way SWMBO has been driving two years longer than me so she’s an “expert”

I always drive- motorhome or car. I have driven for a living all my life and I am a foul passenger. Unfortunately himself is a bad navigator besides which he nods off when travelling.
My late husband was exactly the same:D
The same for us, I’m the only one who can operate a smart phone and a sat nav and even follow a paper map. Himself will just fall asleep if I let him in the passenger seat. I always drive if I don't require a navigator, I e home to Bristol from the tunnel.

My husband and I share the driving.

My designated woman loves driving, she also happens to drive fire engines for a living. Conversely, I prefer motorcycles to cars, hence she tends to drive our van more than I.
Frankly, given her regular large vehicle refresh training, including driving under blues & twos and "making progress", she is way more competent than I!
Well said Darren, I also prefer to leave the difficult bits of driving to Alice, reversing round corners etc

Just had a thought tho - I do all the planning, booking, navigation, picnic providing etc so hubby does say he just gets in the van and just drives (which he does enjoy) so a fair share really. It’s quite funny as if anyone every asks him how long are you here for or where are you going next, he always says haven’t a clue ask Dawn!:D2

The Motor Home is without any doubt my wife's (though she did let me help pay for it) however she refuses to drive it which is a shame as she is by far a better driver than I am (unfortunately I am that impatient, ignorant arrogant T%&T who when behind the driving wheel of a car assumes everyone else is doing it wrong, yet surprisingly calm relaxed even chilled when in HER Motor Home I have even been known to pull over to allow other vehicles past if I am slowing them down).

She is insured to drive it but just doesn't feel comfortable to do so and after 36 years of marriage I have learnt that if she wants to do something I aint gonna be able to stop her (nor would I want too) and if she doesn't want to woe betide me if I even considered trying to persuade her.

The good compromise we have is she drives the car and I drive the kennel on wheels (most people know them as Motor Homes apparently!)

I’m just back from a 2.5k drive around France / UK.

My partner Sharon drove the vast majority of that (I’m better at the navigating) and I must say that about 40 to 50% of the hundreds of vans that we passed were driven by women.

And absolutely no reason why that should not be the case!

We have only had our MH for 4 weeks. My OH has had some experience in the past of driving large vans, whereas I have only ever driven a van once when we moved home. He was keen for me to drive the MH. After some nagging from him last week, I had my first stint. However, it was windy, wet (wind screen wipers on full blast) and on an unfamiliar road with lots of bends and approx 5 miles later, with a queue of cars behind me, I pulled into a lay-by and refused to drive any further, after giving him a verbal ear bashing lol. A few days later, having just left Aviemore to come down the A9, I asked him to pull into the nest lay-by and I took over the driving for the next 100 miles home. The difference being, the weather conditions were good and the road pretty much straight, and also familiar to me. I felt much more relaxed and more confident this time and hopefully, it won’t be long before I have another shot.

What I did find surprising, and unprepared for, is how light the steering is. I was expecting it to be heavier on the steering compared to driving our car which did panic me a bit on my first stint. Plus, getting used to the gear stick and hand brake being in different positions, my OH found it amusing each time I was grabbing fresh air to try and change gears etc ?.

I have already seen a number of women driving motor homes in the short time that we have had ours.
I don’t think it is about what sex you are but down to experience and confidence and for those of us who are a little nervous, choosing the right time for your first experience ?

The lovely Duxette refuses to share the driving under any circumstances. I would pay for the C&MC course if she was willing to attend.

What if I am taken ill, etc. Still refuses to even have a go, or be a named driver on the MH insurance just in case.

I give up.

Much easier being single ?

I (Linda) regulalry drive our motorhome which we have only had since July. When we have had caravans and horse trailers in the past, I always did the towing as I am more patient when manouvering and reversing than Ray is and of course, I am a better driver :D. When I used to do TREC horse competitions, Ray would enjoy a beer or two while I was out riding, so I always had to drive home towing a large horse trailer with our Talbot Express campervan we had at that time.

In the Rules of Motorhoming there are Boy Jobs and Girl Jobs.
Girl Jobs include: All driving, deciding where we’re going (but not navigating), selecting music, having the first shower (thus making sure there’s enough hot water and not having to clean the shower) and keeper of the TV remote.
Boy Jobs include: Navigating, emptying the dunny and grey tank, filling the fresh water tank, barbecuing (and cleaning after use), getting the sun loungers and picnic table out of the garage, somalier, washing dishes, cleaning the exterior of the Motorhome, filling with fuel, checking the oil, all mechanical checks and maintenance, all paperwork, ferry bookings, etc, etc, etc.

When we pick up our 1st motorhome in December i have said I'd like to be the 1st to drive it. I'm nervous as never driven anything that size before but neither has he and I've got more experience driving vans from my job and i could just see me putting it off and slipping into the habit of being the passenger if i don't get in there quick. I shall report back with photos once I've brought it home and parked it on our steep drive!
Don't forget some wheel chocks as backup (y)

Passed test when I was 17.

From day one I drove old bangers, Lotus Elans, Porches, TRs.. MGB sorts, vans.. Motorhomes.. Etc etc etc etc... ..

I prefer MY driving to most men whom I have met.
