Do women drive motorhomes that often, if not why not?

I see quite a few on my travels - I even see women bus drivers and HGV drivers. We get everywhere these days :p

I drive ours. Mr Stroppy only gets to drive it occasionally, if I'm feeling generous and let him. He is however, a useless navigator.

No confidence issues as I often drive a 7.5t truck at work so our 6m panel van is titchy in comparison.

Wish I had a wife like you, sounds perfect :D2 Would love it if my wife drove more but trying to work out how to get her to, thought I would get some ideas from this thread (y)

If you are now being serious
  1. Buy your wife a rule so that she is able to see the difference for herself between 8" and 4"
  2. Ask your wife if she would like to drive the motorhome
  3. Stay behind
  4. Make sure you have a nice pot of tea ready for when she gets home.

I drive MY Moho all the time, sometimes I let my other half drive it, but it makes me nervous! He’s the one who clashed wing mirrors in my van conversion, after I suggested he slowed down when approaching another van in a French village!

I'm all for wimmin driving, just as long as they don't need to park it or reverse :)
See my post above. At a caravan rally, the marshalls asked everyone to pull their vans forward and stop with the tow ball over a target. Said friend was the only one to stop on the bull. None of the men were even close.

I did try to encourage my wife to drive our Inca, in France on one of those empty wide straight roads they do so well, she is a good driver.

She gave it a go but but was obviously very nervous, and found the gear change a bit awkward, (she normally drives a MINI), she thought that me sitting alongside her was putting her off, so I suggested she drop me off, drive up the road to a roundabout or similar then come back for me.. "What on my own".. maybe another time then.

My late husband was exactly the same:D
This has given more incentive to get my wife driving more, seems some men have it made and are living the dream getting driven around and can have a nap, my wife is a lot younger than me so needs less sleep, I would love to just wake up in the South of France :D2

My designated woman loves driving, she also happens to drive fire engines for a living. Conversely, I prefer motorcycles to cars, hence she tends to drive our van more than I.
Frankly, given her regular large vehicle refresh training, including driving under blues & twos and "making progress", she is way more competent than I!

Who me or the OP? If you mean me I hope you enjoy the rest of your holibobs. See you in a month. I hate driving on the A4053 perhaps I should get a man to drive me on those difficult bits.

OP, it was a mini cross reference to another post of mine on another 596 thread, too subtle, but I am surprised you missed it ? x

My girlfriend would drive the MH but as she’s under 25yrs old it would cost £3,000 to add her to the vans insurance. She drives the future tow car instead so we never have any arguments over navigating ?

Was going to get my daughter to do the C1 test, in fact only yesterday were looking at how to do it, BUT had no idea under 25 the insurance went up that amount  Think you have just answered her question whether she could drive to or not, no C1 required for her yet anyway!

I've only just found 596 to be honest, we've been celebrating all weekend, so not been around much.

My wife used to drive the van as much as or more than I did.

There was a rumour going round that she was better at it than me.

She was certainly better at reversing it than I was.

When we bought our first brand new van a few years ago the first thing one of our sons said was “ you’re not going to let Dad drive it are you?” , we share any distance driving but any manoeuvring or ferries and it’s me, I’m so clever I can even navigate and make tea.

Maybe as I only drive in peak time that it is more families and tend to be more men, outside that time you get the crinklies pottering out and about, you know the ones that hate kids and crowds and just think of themselves, that sort, maybe more women drive then? (y) Just to clarify I am NOT saying all women drivers are crinklies, just that this seems to be a quieter time and if confidence was the issue maybe that suits them. I know why wife would drive more if the roads were not is busy (y)
Mate ....stop digging !!

Ann will never drive the van, it's not that she's a bad driver, she suffers from lack of confidence and goes to pieces at the mere thought of it.
Even driving the car she thinks I'm watching her like an examiner ? and I'm not at all. I'm so laid back I'm virtually horizontal ?

EXACTLY... it's the comments from the "husbands" that sap the confidence.

I'm the same , I don't even drive the car if we're together. On my own, no problem.

BUT, to drive the motorhome I'd need help for the first few occasions, but that's not goin' to 'appen!!! (Unless in an absolute emergency, and the insurance fail us)!!!

As an addendum

We have a lot of female friends, travelling alone, who are awesome drivers!!!

And a cross thread reference of my own.... that's exactly why a women only meet was suggested a few years ago - so women could have a go & play with their vans without all the 'helpful' comments ?

When we pick up our 1st motorhome in December i have said I'd like to be the 1st to drive it. I'm nervous as never driven anything that size before but neither has he and I've got more experience driving vans from my job and i could just see me putting it off and slipping into the habit of being the passenger if i don't get in there quick. I shall report back with photos once I've brought it home and parked it on our steep drive!
