Disgusting behaviour on NC500

I know it doesn't help with comprehension but there are many reasons why some folk struggle with it but blaming them or their teachers for their "poor education" rarely helps.

Parents have responsibility too. I could read and write before I went to school.

Now we are into a second generation where some parents cannot help with spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax. Maybe a lot would not even know what is syntax.

I think you don't realise that many are into several generations where school and education is seen as a waste of time. In Leicester it tended to be the big rough mostly white council estates wheras the medical school was probably 86%asian. Why I don't really know.

Most parents don’t have time to help out with learning, they are too busy working full time jobs to pay for mortgages they can barely afford that they bought homes with that they can barely afford to heat and light.

That plus the kids are in class sizes too big for teachers to spot and help those struggling coupled with the fact they are chasing results and not quality due to the pay structures brought in.

When I was young my Dad’s salary was enough to keep a family of 5, he was a welder. Not a chance today.

My then 7 year old could tell me what an imperative verb was, he couldn’t write a story for toffee but those imperative verbs will help him in adult life….

Oh, just to keep it on thread, I read one of their books once, thought it was populist dogs droppings. 😂

Why would you suggest that when it is well known that Asian families have a high regard for education and strive for qualifications while white British families have far lower expectations?

The question is who is engineering it? It’s valued far more in Asian culture than British.

I am lucky enough to work across every suburb, race and class of society. I absolutely love the diversity it brings, I stood on the street in Sparkhill the other week, (which Trump hilariously made out to be a no go area with sharia law), and I went into the asian bakery which rivalled any French boulangerie I have ever entered.

I am trying to stay on topic, we had loads of sure start centres that were opened by the Blair Government to enable the children and parents of poor families that struggled with education etc to be assisted where possible. They have now all closed and gone, the childminder we used a few years back used to have loads of the children for extra lessons from them. Overnight they shut and she never saw the children again.

You can’t have excellent education standards if you don’t invest in the system that achieves them.

A lot better to give kids a better education (and I don't just mean in academic subjects) than think about national service and heading back to the 1950s. It's what could in the medium to long term really improve our economy

I would agree, it won’t happen though under the current Government. I have first hand experience as my wife is a Teacher. The reforms Gove pushed through meant more marking, more planning, more admin and more admin. She went from working 50 hours a week and having the holidays free to being expected to work the holidays and was doing 60+ hours a week. I am not exaggerating, it’s just the way teaching is now hence why they can’t recruit for toffee.

It is also why the fiasco with Teacher awarded grades happened during Covid, they get performance managed the second the kids results drop, so why would any sane person mark kids down if they could mark them up?

I could go on. 😆

I wouldn’t be averse to National Service though, it would do a lot of people good.
