Comfortmatic Fluid Changes

Yes they are fiat pro, if they want to just check rather than replace that is their choice as if it goes pear shaped they will be getting it back off the low loader , with a stamp in the book for their own service they can argue amongst themselves
If it is still under warranty you might get away with that but otherwise I think you would have a great deal of difficulty pinning a costly clutch repair on them for failing to spot dodgy hydraulic fluid. Why not insist on them doing it right in the first place and avoid the hassle of recovery together with the motorhome being out of use while they try to fit you into their busy schedule. I would rather pay a bit extra and not have my holiday interrupted.

Yes it is still under warranty so needs the service history kept upto date, reading the service book I could get away without an oil change as it says upto 24 months and just have the comformatic change but I doubt any fiat pro would stamp the book just having the clutch oil changed

Does anyone know what fluid goes in the hydraulic side of the comformatic box?

The gearbox hydraulics and the clutch hydraulics need different fluids but I am not sure what is specified for yours, it may have changed from time to time.

Yes I changed the fluid in the clutch side yesterday, and yes the hydraulic fluid is different. I have done both before but cannot remember what I used. Will have to call Fiat. Thanks for your reply (y)

Jo662 hi what software did you use to change "dot 4" or did you gravity bleed.
I've been trying to find somewhere that is prepared to do it near Leeds to no avail
regards Alan

Gravity bleed if separate clutch reservoir doesn't need any software and I think combined brake reservoir would be the same. Remove air filter cover for access, clear tube on CSC bleed screw, crack the plastic bleed screw 1/2 turn and slowly watch the nice clean fluid get replaced with more nice clean fluid until you have replaced enough to feel comfortable that it has all been changed. Re-tighten bleed screw and refit filter cover. 20 mins well spent 👍

thanks dunnah01 ..Can I do the same with the hydraulic fluid . Where is the bleed nipple for hydraulic fluid

Have 2017 Ducato with a Comformatic box and all is fine with it, so as it’s over 4 years with only 19k and has not had a gearbox oil change decided to get a quote from Fiat professional my nearest dealer “Motus commercial” in Glasgow. We’ll £233+vat for the gear box oil change 🙀
Has anyone on the Forum had theirs done and if so any recommendations please.
Based in Ayr.
Thanks.

Erm…. Have you read this thread…🤷🏼‍♂️

Gearbox oil shouldn't need changing, it's the hydraulic fluid that needs checking and more important the clutch fluid should be changed

Bit of a sore point today, for some reason Nick was checking that our 4 year service had been done properly as they hadn’t stamped the book even though I’d left it out for them on the seat open on the correct page. They had closed it up and packed it away and even left me a pen! Unfortunately Nick noticed they’d written N/A next to hydraulic fluid check. He phoned and the service manager has agreed it wasn’t done, they fortunately keep good records. Off I go to Adams Morey Southampton again tomorrow. What a pain in the bum.

Got my clutch fluid changed for £120 Traffic Motor Company in Barrhead

Interesting and worrying thread - anyone know or recommend a competent Fiat MH service garage in the South West that understands comfortmatic boxes? Reading this thread I don’t know who to ask that I can trust!
Our MH comfortmatic performs well but is 8 years old and only done 13500 miles. I think we need to be checked out by a Fiat professional that I can trust on this subject. Thanks

Chelston Motorhomes at Wellington are a Fiat Professional and should know about Comfortmatics but make sure they know that the clutch fluid needs changing regularly because some Fiat Professionals have missed this.

We tried to get a service done by them but they weren’t interested as we’d not bought the van from them. This was pre Covid. Don’t know if things are better or worse since then.

Do not assume that Fiat Professional garages know about comfortmatic gearboxes, our local one has never had to do anything with them and haven't a clue what's needed or how to do it! 🙄

We're struggling to find anyone who has a clue, never mind having done one so at present other than a full service + brake fluid we're leaving well alone whilst the search goes on.

Perhaps we need 2 classifications “Fiat Professional” and “Fiat Un-Professional”. The latter applies to those that can’t read and understand the latest service schedule which clearly states that clutch activation fluid needs checking at 2 years and replacing at 4 years.

Back from Southampton Adams Morey and the hydraulic fluid has now been replaced, mind you how would we ever actually know!
They’ve also stamped and dated the service book from 3/8/23

Everyone that has had the fluid change, have you felt the gearbox is any different..? Smother or quieter for instance..?

Be interesting to see if any difference or a placebo effect… a bit like when I wash it, it seems to drive better…🤷🏼‍♂️

No I wouldn’t expect it to feel different unless the old fluid had deteriorated to the point where it is already causing damage and leaking. The whole point of the regular replacement is to catch it before it causes problems. There might sometimes be a slight difference if the clutch contact point has changed. The fluid that is changed is the hydraulic fluid in the clutch activation mechanism not the gearbox oil.

Yes, I was a bit tongue in cheek but when I do an engine oil change I swear the engine is smoother and quieter…🤔😉😎

When I had my fluid changed at AM last month, the chap showed me the dark, discoloured fluid in the reservoir, which he said was contamination and was not a good sign.
He suggested having the fluid changed yearly should help offset any future problems with it.
I'm not sure how the fluid becomes contaminated as I assumed it was a sealed system. Unless, of course it is the seals on the master or slave cylinders causing the problem.
As to any difference since I had it done, non at all, other than me being acutely aware of the slight clunk each time a gear is selected. 🤔
