Buy British, why not?

He was the Senior salesman at N&B, the manufacturers, and said it in their showroom at the factory.

But then the likes of N&B, Morelo, Phoenix are not interested in the ,3.5t market so can build quality without worrying about weight, except for keeping under the max weight of the chassis they build on, but many of their chassis are 7,5t.

Geoff
You might be surprised at how many in the under 7.5t class are up against the maximum weight.

You are the expert on that category, having studied all models and visited the factories.

So which models would you describe as being near the 7.5t, unladen?

I need to know before I splash cash. I will pay for your consultancy. :giggle:

Hi Geoff

Anything with a car garage on the daily chassis for starters plus anything on a 4 cylinder truck chassis will be close, I showed earlier how many kg we added and we stopped ticking boxes when we ran out of money . Bear in mind that ours is the shortest palace so also the lightest then add into the mix another metre of bodywork possibly glass windows and glass side panels, maybe another water tank and wash img machine and you will be on the limit.

Put mine on the local weigh-bridge before we went away a few weeks back.
Full tank of water 360ltrs
Full Fuel tank
Me (muscular) 95kg😁
E bike in garage plus all chairs cookers etc:
Just Mrs CC and clothes to add.

Came in at 6950kg so still a fair bit more to go and if I dumped most of the water another 250kg+

Happy with that😁

Good job you have LiFePO4 batteries though😏 another 100 litres of fuel and a scooter in the garage and you are heading to 7200kg.

Trouble is they want to make them to light so it affects the strength, obviously our crap 3rd world road system doesn’t help🤬🤬
If you think that the UK has third world roads then all I can say is that you have never been in the third world as a resident. Having lived three years in Zambia and three+ years in Ghana where we have returned often in the last seven/eight years, I know all about third world roads many of which are unmetalled but you can travel at 50+mph on many in good nick. The potholes encountered here are nothing to what you have to beware of in Africa ( we have travelled in a Toyota Rav 4 in Ghana and VW variant in Zambia). The saying goes, when asked, "Which side of the road do you drive on?" the answer is "Depends on the potholes" some of which are huge. Sometime you get an enterprising local bunch of youths armed with shovels, wheelbarrow and lot of enthusiasm who fill the potholes with dirt and demand money as you pass, many throwing out their loose change as the do so!

BTW, the first time I towed a caravan was from what was then called Salisbury in Rhodesia to Beira in Mozambique much of which was on 9foot strip tarmac where you learned only to give way by running the left hand wheels onto the dirt "hard shoulder" unless it was a truck in which case you get all four off onto the hard shoulder sometime with a drop of several inches. Now that was driving!

The price list for our van has weights of all optional equipment as well as prices, the order order confirmation had weights as well, thats 873kg from the options list:xrofl:

And when we weighed it at home it was pretty spot on(y)
At +5% your van could have been 375kkg more.

Unfortunately for some when choosing a Motorhome the payload is not that high on the priority list (in fact not even a consideration) and of course it should be. For new, assuming you know what to look, the weights of all the main accessories are set out so with a little bit of homework you can make the call if it’s a suitable for your needs or not. Family buying a 4 berth Motorhome under the watershed of 3.5tons is going to end in tears.

I'm not understanding your point here Lenny? the overweight allowance before Vosa would prosecute is 5% so on a 7500kgs would be 375kgs.
I think Lenny HB was referring to the 5% tolerance manufacturers are allowed when quoting weights. Carthago are quite good at making full use of this allowance.

I thought the VOSA 5% was only advice to their staff but doesn’t stop them from refusing to let you move on until your vehicle is within legal weight limits. A friend of mine was stopped for an overloaded trailer being towed behind a car. He wasn’t prosecuted but was only allowed to proceed when he had redistributed his load. There are other factors too, are the Police held to the same 5% tolerance when investigating an accident and looking for someone to blame? Also worth remembering that they can prosecute for each overloaded axle as well as the overall weight and if the 375kg was all on one axle you might be into the serious overload territory.

Always is, Concorde made one of their top liners plated on 10t, I assure you that plating a MAN chassis at only 10t will not give you much of a payload by the time you are done with it as a converter , I don’t understand why they plate it at 10t though, it could be plated way higher then that, if it was used for commercial purposes ?

I see, sorry Lenny HB .

I've heard the "what about the insurers" argument before and don't think its very likely. If its serious enough to get the accident investigators involved then it would be quite challenging to get an accurate weigh on whats left and even if they could, the Insurers have still got to prove contributory negligence in some way.

Correct(y) give or take Lenny's comment, that's was why we weighed it on the way home and I was pleasantly surprised at how close it was.

But does anybody weigh them before they buy?

If they buy out the showroom they could but if you spec up a build there is nothing to weigh so the only way is to add up the total of the parts as our order process did.

Yes, I got the dealer to get a weigh bridge ticket so that I could check how much of the 5% tolerance the manufacturer had used. I guess I was already committed to the purchase but it was useful information when working out what extras I could manage.
