Brought and bought what’s going on?

My problem is I was taught to read and write using the ITA system and have spent the rest of my life correcting the harm done by that!!! I did hear it's coming back in a trendy new disguise along with child directed learning, both of which will fail massively in overcrowded state schools.

I doubt that many know that that which they have written is spelled incorrectly or is wrong grammatically so they won't worry about it or seek to 'improve' their knowledge.
(BTW - I'm not suggesting that they should).

Why are these always mixed up
Book. Buck.
Rook. Ruck

And various others with the same oo and uc

Punctuation is also important. Especially if you have ever helped your Uncle Jack off a horse. When what you thought that you were doing was helping your Uncle Jack, off a horse.

?????????

And I rest my case.

Thank you, eddievaniebitzie... ;)

Why am I thinking of a 70's / 80's kiddies TV show involving puppet spiders ? ???

News is what they don't want you to hear. Everything else is advertising.

You do have a very relevant point.

I've completely disengaged with Auntie Beeb, once a trusted source of accurate news.

Saville, Sir Cliff fiasco and pay off, stopping of over 75s license fee freebie, every reporter waving their arms around unnecessarily, anchors making it more about them than the content, and, most annoyingly, programmes based on speculation rather than fact.

Inform, educate, and entertain.

Current BBC only appears to be doing the latter.

There's an old journalist's saying: News is what they don't want you to print. Everything else is advertising.

I've never trusted journalists, they have more self-interest than politicians.

"A good day to bury bad news". Twin Towers hit by terrorists, along with other, overlooked targets.

And, with the lead up to Brexit, Auntie Beeb deems it appropriate to air programmes about the IRA and Nazi propaganda...

...shame on them, they're supposed to be apolitical, but in airing these programmes, at this precise momement in time, are directly affecting a large swathe of the population.

George Orwell was a visionary. It's not the 55" flatscreen on the wall you need to be worried about, it's Alexa, and Google assistant, and all of the other pieces of crap that we don't need, but are recording all of our activity and reporting back to HQ, then bombarding us with advertising.

Wow, ITA! I'd forgotten all about that. I could already read when I went to school (taught by my mother). When I got there, they started to teach us using this alien system, ITA (Initial Teaching Alphabet), which used a modified alphabet including extra characters, which was supposed to help counter the non-phonetic nature of written English. So I ended up effectively being able to read two different forms of English -- ITA and TO (traditional orthography). Maybe it helped me in the end, as I can now read about seven languages.

There were some kids it definitely didn't help: the phonetic stuff just confused matters. I remember after we migrated from ITA to TO one lad writing in his story 'I lick the teacher rather than I like the teacher'.

And this stuff was sanctioned by educational authorities and higher government ???

Just goes to show the inadequacies of the people in charge giving all of this crap the green light.

Trust no one but yourself, closest family and friends.

I do wish my sat nav would stop telling me to go straight over a roundabout. :(

I think you will find ITA is not coming back in.

Education Authorities have all but disappeared these days due to direct funding for Academies, Free Schools etc. In any case, its the government which set the curriculum and has done for the last 30 years.

Update it, as the small furry animals that promote a certain price comparison website would say.

I had no idea what ITAs were. I have no idea about the current education policy / targets / funding.

I do know that more students are passing exams, pass rates are going up, and more students than ever are being admitted to HE.

I also know that, Tier 1 universities are having to offer additional grammar and language courses for some students, (how the chuff did they get there in the first place ?), overal grades are on the up (????), A students are now A+, A++, or A+++...?????????????

Basically the whole system is fuck3d.

I ordered a meal in a restaurant recently, the waiter took my order and said "no worries". I asked "why would you be worried"?
Response was a smile, I don't think it registered.

?

???

Thank you Vipar, you've made my day, month, and year !

Never before have I heard such nonsense...

...only explanation is that you are either a troll, or an alien ?

My money's on the former, and I'm a betting man.

And you pertain to be the owner of an Autocruise starlet 2 ?

I am flabbergasted by some website responses, but yours takes the biscuit.

I'm embarressed by the fact that we are both genetically related, or are we ???

George Bernard Shaw, who was an advocate of phonetic spelling, gave this as an example of confusing English spelling. Using ways that the letters are pronounced in other words, what does “ghoti” spell?

If you already know this, don’t spoil the fun by giving the answer.

It's a southern hemisphere colloquialism, which my British born cousin, now residing in Australia, uses frequently.

I wouldn't worry, unless the food or service was bad.

Guess you are in London, or the SE ?

Magnet for young Antipodean travellers.

My pet hates are

"will you borrow it to me"
"Kinda like"
"Y know"

One of mine apart from the brought issue
Is fink instead of think.
What ever happened to the th ?

I live in Sherborne which quite clearly has two Rs and being a West Country lass I pronounce both as do all the locals. However the other half of the population , the posh ones , pronounce it “Shah-bun” , the bun bit being so short that the u is silent!

I recently heard of a road accident where the excuse given for driving straight over the give way line at a crossroads into a car on the major road was ‘my navigator told me to go straight over’. She was a younger driver who thought ’straight’ meant without stopping. It shows that a basic understanding of the English language does matter and can have serious consequences.

I think it also demonstrates the folly of teaching people to slavishly follow instructions rather than training them to think.

That is because posh people have to talk to their horses and horses can’t pronounce rrrrrs. :giggle:

1. My sat nav is fully updated.
2. Anything wrong with more people passing exams? That is to be expected given the significant improvements made in teaching over the last 30 years.
3. Ever considered those English courses may be mostly for the foreign students at the university?

The system may be wrong in your opinion, but how much do you actually know of the system today, or even when you were at school? Far too many assume that what and how they were taught at school decades ago is the only way to go today.
