Brought and bought what’s going on?

I am going to be really pedantic and in fact the plural is ignoramuses as in the original Latin it was derived from a verb and not a noun! Don’t you just hate a know it all, especially one who got an A in Latin.
Eh No money padre

Oh come on:p
Sorry I was being silly, I genuinely didn’t know what you meant and thought it might be a Scottish colloquialism. I didn’t mean to cause offense and I seem to have compounded it. Thought you were now touring in Spain! Apologies.

Lol no offense taken I was having a joke with you as you said you had an A in Latin

Eh no money padre = in nomini patris

I have one or two pet hates in this arena, here are just a few:
Of instead of have, as in " I should of thought that..."
Where instead of were - "we where thinking about....."
And the ubiquitous lottery of their, there and they're.
I have finally come to the conclusion though, that in the words of my favourite Disney princess; I just need to "let it go".
Been trying to educate my supposedly highly taught son those two for years.

Three more:

Pedal / peddle
Have / of as in "I could of spelled it correctly if I'd tried"
Quad bikes
Shouldn't that be " I could've spelled it correctly if I'd tried"

Brought is the past tense of bring.
Bought is the past tense of buy.

Passed and past is my hangup.

I have seen references to people having brought something as in purchasing, I always thought that was bought, I though brought was when someone brought something over to you, I’m no spelling police but have I actually missed something going on, as to me it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Oh and it’s not just on the forum I hear it elsewhere as well. Thanks

Someone brought a fool onto the forum, or was the fool bought and he has paid to come on here?

If the fool was bought then a crime was committed!

That's human trafficking ! :Eeek:

I

It's not the spelling that is important - it's the content.....

And the context, I'm afraid.

Many a, (should that be 'an' ?), high court case has been thrown out due to incorrect spelling and grammar within crucial documents...

Correct grammar within the legal profession is a complete necessity.

Even Kirsty Allsop said it on TV a couple of nights ago
She “bought it to Phil’s attention”

What is that all about??

EveryFInk is another one
Pacifically is another

Too many G&Ts, and I love Kirstals & Pip... ?

... And mine is.. 'oh. Go on then.' .. as though they are doing you a favour.. 'yes, please', will do me fine.

Please, don't diss Mrs. Doyle...

I'm Scottish I have no desire to speak proper England

View attachment 335055

The only Scots that I've met that speak proper English are land owners, educated in England, and distantly related to royalty...

...the same one's who initiated the highland clearances in the 18th & 19th centuries, and decimated the rural Sottish population.

Not defending anyone...just saying...and love the above quote, btw.

Seriously, I'm quite sure that most will have no interest in 'improving' their grammar, neither will they care in the slightest if it annoys you (or anyone else). :)
My 12 year old son wrote an essay which included: '....the world isn't bigger nuff..........'
The teacher hadn't corrected it. She said that it was an essay and it was the content being marked, not the grammar or spelling.

There lies the problem. Education, or lack of it.

I recently enrolled as a mature student. Was gobsmacked that grammar and spelling wasn't penalised in exams.

Seems that the establishment, and educational system, is so focused on results and passes, for league tables, that the basics are overlooked.

Who remembers old English?

I'd only just grasped that when they changed it

Old English used to be French, or rather Norman, after 1066 and the Conquest.

Beef and mutton being classic examples.

My pet hate is people referring to a chest of draws.

Now, the owner of those would definitely NOT be winning any wet T-shirt competitions !!!

Me too.

Easy way to remember bought / brought conumdrum is that there is no 'R' in buy.

Also, I was taught to use as few words as you can...

...so when did "more rainy" become acceptable instead of "rainier" ?

Very, very good point.

However, only works for languages that you are familiar with.

That's why the Rosetta stone took 83 years to decipher...that, and the lack of grammar ! ?

This subject resembles Brexit in several ways.

Truth is that it matters, in certain circumstances.

If you make yourself understood, with bad spelling and grammar, in a friendly, social situation, then no problem.

In a legal situation, it's a definite no-no.

People correcting grammar and spelling are only trying to help and eductate, and readdress the failings of our educational system.

Internet posts, through their grammar and spelling, can tell you a wealth of information about the poster.

Anyhows, how's everyone's day going ? ?

My latest hate is Fake news all news is news

No, you are completely off the mark there.

News is new, and new stuff we didn't know before.

Fake is made up, fictional, imagined, unreal.

Therefore, by definition, NOT news.
