Brought and bought what’s going on?

I find it not something to become agitated about , after all we spend large amounts to go to a foreign country where mostly we don't speak the language and enjoy the experience of trying to communicate
whereas we are now able to have a similar experience in our own country at no cost :)

I do enjoy learning other languages, just concerned I can't understand English or supposed English any more

Within the forum with my modicum of intelligence and careful reading I can normally get the gist of what someone is trying to say even if their sentences are not grammatically correct, the important thing is what they are saying, not how they say it. As others have said life is toooooooooo short to worry about it. This is supposed to be a fun forum, why has tolerance gone out of the window?

Now I agree there are times when the written word has to be grammatically correct for all sorts of reasons but not here on fun.

Well, like, I brought it over there in that shop, like, mum bought me shopping, like, in the car, like?

If nobody questions these idiotic sayings then we will end up in a more confused life, too many people just let it go, it’s about time they were told they sound plain stupid, it makes absolutely no sense at all. I always tell people they sound stupid and what exactly do they mean, when they think about it they say oh yeh your right, must just be in zombie mode like when their heads are embedded in their phones.
I would look through earlier threads on the topic because I think your onto thin ice - tread carefully ?

Even Kirsty Allsop said it on TV a couple of nights ago
She “bought it to Phil’s attention”

What is that all about??

EveryFInk is another one
Pacifically is another

Reminds me of an old mate of mine, sadly no longer with us. If talking about “psychology” or “pneumatic” etc., he would always remind us that .....”the P is silent...as in bathwater”. :roflmto:

Our eldest daughter was taught at infant school to spell as it sounded, whose crazy idea was that, when she moved to the junior school she had to learn all over again, sadly the damage was done and now does struggle with her spelling.

As for the spoken language surely all language's evolve, just look how we spoke back in the 15th & 16th century.

Forsooth

Forsooth you are correct brave sir

My pet hate is ‘no, you’re alright ‘ when offered a drink. What does that even mean??

... And mine is.. 'oh. Go on then.' .. as though they are doing you a favour.. 'yes, please', will do me fine.

I'm Scottish I have no desire to speak proper England

My pet hates are not spelling related, or even usage really

People who start everything they say with 'So,'
broadcasters who 'umm and ahh'
People who intersperse every other sentence with 'you know'
And all the knobs who, after something awful has happened, say 'lessons will be learned' when you know full well they will not be.
At the end of the day!

Innit bro

"a game of two halves" I am waiting for extra value experiencing one of 3 :)

That will be a good game, for once the commentators might be correct when they say one of the players is giving more than 100% effort. Until then I will argue that 100% is mathematically the maximum effort a player can give.

Unfortunately if you learn the wrong spelling or wrong word it is very difficult to 'unlearn' it ... this I suspect is the case with brought/bought. Similarly with borrow/loan, ensure/insure etc people often use the wrong one or don't understand the difference.

In most cases so long as the person using the word and the person trying to understand what is being said/written etc know what is meant it's not an issue, but sometimes it's not so obvious. Occasionally I'll type something which should have the word 'now' in but instead my brain goes into daft mode and makes my fingers type 'not' totally changing the meaning!

Surely we are meant to progress in life.........
As for the forum I really don't care what they write, ......
Seriously, I'm quite sure that most will have no interest in 'improving' their grammar, neither will they care in the slightest if it annoys you (or anyone else). :)
My 12 year old son wrote an essay which included: '....the world isn't bigger nuff..........'
The teacher hadn't corrected it. She said that it was an essay and it was the content being marked, not the grammar or spelling.

It's derived from the Latin, so to be pedantic, if you don't know it you are all ignorami.
Ignorami ? Is that paper folding? ?

I got my arse whacked, for not knowing the difference between no and know. Our old English teacher said I should have Know n how to respond to the word no!

I am going to be really pedantic and in fact the plural is ignoramuses as in the original Latin it was derived from a verb and not a noun! Don’t you just hate a know it all, especially one who got an A in Latin.
