A photo of the day thread

Today's Belgian offering is from Bokrijk where we cycled through a lake and walk through the arboretum. Has a mahoosive playground. Free entry. Pay for parking but free today (presumably winter) One of the car parks is on S4s but no idea if you can stay

Another unusual Belgian offering of cycling through the trees where you cycle up a path to the height of the trees in a circle and come back down. Nearest town is Lommel but we stayed leopolsberg at the marina for 10 euros Inc elec water etc and bar with Jupiter at @ 2.20 euros.
Went on to see a berg north of Lommel called Sahara where we presume it is a swimming beach in the summer. Round journey of 54 Kms very very flat on ebikes.

A few nights away to S.W.Scotland again. Last night on the Aire at Kirkudbright but not much has changed since Jan when we were last here so no photos.
Moved west this morning for coffee at Creetown bay...

Stopped at the picnic spot at Ardwell Bay, Mull of Galloway for a wander along the beach and met some new best mates...

Amazing, that just by turning the phone through 90° that such a different atmosphere is produced...

Just pitched up at New England Bay C&MC site for lunch of PiriPiri smoked mackerel & cream cheese pate and rye crispbread

Thanks! I suspect they are Mo.
It is a tidal channel of the River Cree and I would think that nets would be strung across them.

The only doubt is that they seem to be in groups of three in a line with, rather than across the flow of the water.

When the pic was taken, it was slack water, but within about 15min, the tide was on it's way in and the poles were physically shaking in the water and leaving an upstream wake despite each pole having two guy ropes.

There was reasonably firm ground between the poles and the roadside for access.

The Belgian offer of the day is Mechelen where we "walked on water" with a footpath up the river.
We are parked up at Heist op den berg next to the sports centre. Free. Free bike electric charging

suavecarve, do you work for the Belgian Tourist Board? If so, you should get a pay rise. You’re doing a great job of showing us the country. I have travelled through Belgium several times en route to other countries but never explored it the way you are. I think I should perhaps make it a destination on my Bucket List.

I must admit to doing exactly the same.
Belgium has always been a place to travel through, pick up cheap lpg, fags on the way back, but we had a 12 day holiday to "waste" and a bit of research found these places.
Some of the mundane cycling along the canals has been beautiful.
I m a little gobsmacked myself

Also, in doing the research and searching for hints on here, not many others have been (and written about it)

Take many of the town's we have been to and word search reveals no hints for us to have tried.

Next up Leuven then Ghent (we think)

namwaldog ........... Lovely photo`s...... Out of curiosity... In this photo.. are they some sort of fishing devices ?

They're called "stake nets" Mo and I think the type may be unique to the Scottish side of Solway Firth, along with the hand held "Haaf" nets, brought over by the Vikings.
The posts stand about 12 foot tall and may have between two and five "pockets" in them where the fish are trapped.
When the fish encounter the nets, usually on the incoming tide, they're "guided" towards the pockets, then get trapped inside by the "funnel" design.
They had to be attended after every tide, but the dotted area in my plan drawing of a section of net was an exit that was lifted at the weekend as there was no fishing allowed in Scotland on a Sunday.
It was my Dad's job for quite a few years to operate some of these nets, very hard work in all hours and all weathers. Not only had you to pick up any fish, you also had to "clean" the net by beating it with a long curved stick, a bit like beating a 3/4 mile long carpet and I remember him coming home with a blistered face as the net might be covered with jellyfish if the conditions dictated !
The nets were taken down, posts and all at the end of the season (October ?) and rebuilt every Spring as winter storms and ice floes would destroy them.
Not all the salmon or sea trout ended up with the owners and I can remember as a kid in the 60's, going for a bath, only to find a couple of huge salmon "resting" in there and it's the reason I refuse to eat farmed salmon, as I can remember what salmon should actually taste like !
Most of the nets were removed in the eighties due to pressure from SEPA and the riparian owners who's rivers ran into the firth.

Ghent is a lovely town centre. We discovered it purely by accident but that”s another story.

We stayed on a site by the sports centre where a bus leaves every fifteen minutes for the town centre.

We went to a quirky little place in Jackarilla officially called Teteria la Cueva but the local expats call it the Secret Garden, it's supposed to be a Tea house but it has a well stocked bar as well.

Woke up to wind and rain so gave up on Leuven and came to Ghent.
Poured down all day.
Aire is by sports centre almost under the motorway but we hardly hear the alleged noise.
12 euros Inc leccy water etc. Lovely town (but not in wet) tram 600 m away 2.50 euros per trip so 10 euros return for 2 of us.
Would come again with better weather.

The altar thingy of Ghent in the cathedral (think monuments men film) was 4 euros each to go see it. You will note there are no pictures !!! (Tfg)
