A photo of the day thread

For me places like Gibraltar/ \jenny's Point Silverdale and Arnside Knott, many a picnic had there and then mum would drag us all to some blackberry picking on the way home. Smudger55
Yes, Arnside knott, I remember it well. Also the “Fairy Steps”, the hidden staircase up the cliff.

Unfortunately (?), that was over 50 years ago. I wonder if youngsters today understand those simple pleasures?

As someone who plays video games on a regular basis I have no criticism of modern youth but wonder if they could ever appreciate the simplicity of life for kids in the 50’s and 60’s.

I suppose they are now taught that in history lessons! :oops:

There was a thread about art prints of photographs started earlier today and I mentioned on it the work of the photographer Victoria Hillman. Some of her photos have a a unique look, such as these ones:

<Broken link removed>

This got me thinking on how they are done and very obligingly I found on her website a description of what she did to create of one of her images, the first one shown on the page above.

<Broken link removed>

In brief it is a composite of several images which she combined in her Canon camera. My Olympus won't do that so I turned to Photoshop and the tools to blend layers. I took my camera on this afternoon's dog walk and took a few snaps of trees and leaves. Sadly, the Autumn colours haven't arrived here yet but this does mean I have a little more time to hone my technique before they do. :)

The first photo I took is a deliberately out of focus shot of a branch looking up into the sky.

The second is a close up of a few sweet chestnut leaves.

PA055785-reduced.jpg

What I wanted to do was create an image which had the out of focus canopy behind the sweet chestnut leaves.

Photoshop has lots of different blending options and other adjustments such as opacity but after only a few minutes effort I produced this:

I'm not for one second saying it is a great artistic achievement but I was impressed how easy it was to do.

Roll on Autumn. :)

Never heard of her before. There were some beautiful photos that made excellent artwork. Well done you for recreating the method. (y)

Many years ago I had a Hasselblad camera. (I was professional before the cancer drugs made things difficult.)

I used to love creating art like that DBK with double exposures, etc., various techniques... ALL done in the camera.... It sorted the men from the boys.. Women from girls? :). It has all changed now with technology and programs like Photoshop..

Love threads like this with people sharing their memories in life.

Never got as far as you, I had a Canon A1 with various lenses and my wife had a Contax. Then we got a car that seemed to go too fast to see photo opportunities. 😳

Doing it with proper film must take a lot of planning. Much respect. :)
With digital it is just a case of shooting dozens of images and then seeing which ones work.

Winters on it's way

After all this rain the waterfall at Coed y Brenin forest centre is very impressive. Pictures don’t really do it justice and the noise was incredible. (y)

Brilliant photo. I can almost hear the noise by just looking at the power of the water.

And another composition - made using the process described in post #20,050 above. I'll stop now and not bore anyone with any others, at least for a while. :) This one was made using three combined images.

Related to Post 20031, driving back home called in to my daughter in Nantwich to see her new puppy Nellie. My daughter loves elephants, ha... ha.. but for reasons unknown to me she can't have one as a pet in her home. So new puppy named with elephants in mind and Guinness has a great head on it. Smudger55

I nearly stepped on this Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) on my garden path this morning. I don't think it's long for this world as it was reluctant to open its wings and fly away. They only live for 2-6 weeks.... less if my foot gets in the way. Sorry my camera work is not up to the standard of DBK Mikey RV and others on here.

Thanks for kind words but my photos are only taken with my phone, I do like my photography but got fed up with lugging it all about, now I have my phone / camera with me all the time.

Walk today
Wye Bridge, Monk Street, Vauxhall Fields, Rockfield Road, stopped to lean on Monnow Bridge, (pity I didn’t look at what the phone was actually focussing on 😊🤔) Monnow Street, Church Street, on past two churches, Wye Bridge and then home
