Very cold night, but toasty inside. Woke up to the first frost of the Autumn.

Argosarchus horridus, or the New Zealand bristly stick insect. Not doing a very good job of camouflaging herself. She's about 20cms long (about 8inches). She will probably stay on the wall, playing dead, for several days and when she disappears I will be worrying myself to death about where she's gone! Not out of concern for her welfare but my own!

Drove up, in car to visit mum in Bolton-le-Sands and took her around Silverdale and Arnside, places we use to go for picnics as kids. Views across

Bay from Silverdale Shore, then to Arnside from the little tarmac "pier". Being from North West I could not miss the opportunity to have a Meat & Potato Pie. EEE it was good. So if funsters you visit Arnside go to the cafe shown in photo and you will not be disappointed, it almost opposite the pier, on corner by pub.

No bike today so walking. I found a unicorn just standing there looking at me .

Arnside brings back memories of days gone by. My Grandparents had a static caravan near there in the sixties. I think it was Fell End Caravan Park.
Another caravan owner lived in Arnside so me and Grandma used to go there whilst Grandad was working in Barrow in Furness.
Probly gone now but it as a great treat to go to the cafe near the station in the morning then catch the train to Grange Over Sands.

It brings back memories for me too.

From the ages of 11 to 14, together with my two cousins, I was “shipped off” to Arnside every summer school holiday as all our parents worked full time. My uncle was the village policeman there so we spent the time in the Police Station house.

They were fantastic times, swimming in the sea regardless of the weather, jumping from the pier, treading in the sea for flounders and visiting the Lido at Grange-over-Sands by train, across the viaduct.

It was paradise for adventurous kids, no “elf & safety” to limit our activities. The only problem we had was being reported to the Police for scrumping apples from an orchard. Embarrassing for us and for our uncle!

For me places like Gibraltar/ \jenny's Point Silverdale and Arnside Knott, many a picnic had there and then mum would drag us all to some blackberry picking on the way home. Smudger55
