If You Have A Weak Stomach,

Don't Look!!!!!

Sharing an online lunch with a Chinese friend, Stir Fried Grasshoppers

Not so much the grasshoppers that would be a challenge, there looks to be an awful lot of red chillies there! But maybe the red bits are something else?

Good day for getting out, so I got out!
Buckland Abbey, Devon NT. Suitable for any size motorhome. The only Cistercian Monastery not to be vandalised by Henry VIII after the dissolution, instead it was converted to a house by one of Henry's mates, and later became the home of great British hero Francis Drake - victor over the Spanish Armada, privateer, explorer and all round action man. The resulting house is a fascinating layer cake of a mansion built into the medieval abbey. It was also fortified during the 100 years war against France.

And for those that like to peek inside there are a wealth of treasures to ogle. EASILY the most valuable is the only original Rembrandt owned by the NT, a superb self portrait recently proven to be an original following exhaustive and state of the art testing by experts. It now takes pride of place in a very secure position, and it's current value is a cool 50 MILLION POUNDS !!!!

But the shadow of Sir Francis Drake is the most heavily encountered past life around this house, everywhere his personal belongings can be seen. Including his famous drum taken with him when he circumnavigated the world in his ship; the Golden Hind. Legend has it that whenever England is in mortal danger then the drum will beat of it's own accord.

Do you think the drum has been busy lately? :)

Reckon old Drakey went ballistic when he heard England was in a union with Spain and France, drum probably went off so often that the entire West Country voted out of the EU just to shut the darn thing up.

Lovely photos @roadster55 thanks for posting , I love the historical details .
Glad you enjoyed your day . Did you have to hide when taking photos because sometimes they don't let you!

Thanks Anthea, I know you enjoy seeing these places along with others, which has given me a little project of sorts!
Absolutely no problem taking photos WITHOUT flash inside, except for one original painting of Drake which is on loan from the US - they make all that clear when you go in. Think the photography at these places is fine if the stuff is actually owned by the NT.
