A new adventure to Africa

So are you going via Ceuta or Tangier Med?
Tangier Med, then toll road to one of the campsites by Mohammedia as the forecast is warmer down south. Sort out SIM cards there and keep going south chasing the sun & surf!

Either Camping L’Ocean Blue or Camping Mimosa. Has anyone got a preference/recommendation?

Mimosa was far better imo Its more central to the shops/ market and restaraunts.its a short walk to the beach area. Ocean bleu is out of town .it's near a beach but surrounded by flats .
You will miss out a few nice places by going down the peage to mohammedia.but you could do them on the way back.

A grim day in Algeciras. Can’t even see the Rock!

Well I think we made the right decision to head South quickly today. It was absolutely pissing it down and 11 degrees when we left the port about 2pm. Customs queuing was very slow, we got some cash and hit the toll road. Really didn't fancy sitting twiddling our thumbs on a damp campsite. We only have 5 weeks here and would far rather get the benefit of the good weather. If we like Morroco then we'll come back year after year and do it more in depth.

It rained for at least half of our 350k drive and gradually warmed up as we got further South. We arrived in Mohammedia around 6pm and the sun was just breaking through the bank of cloud. Much warmer and totally dry here. Got settled on Mimosa campsite which is quite busy and went for a wander to see the waves and get some food as we were so hungry.

The warm air and sea smell was lovely and we just picked the 1st restaurant we saw as were too tired to mess about choosing.

It was pretty empty with only us eating but we were pleasantly surprised by the food. A gorgeous plate of dips and bread arrived which we hadn't ordered and then our mains were huge! I only ate half my calamari so the rest went into a napkin and I pocketed it along with the rest of the bread to doll out to the numerous stray dogs we'd passed on the seafront.

Friendly service and super cheap. £20 all in.

On the way back we knew we were definitely in Morroco when we saw a donkey taking himself for a walk down the road. He had better lane discipline than a lot of the drivers on the toll road.

Oh and we've no Sims yet but there is good campsite WiFi right in the van!

Langoustine look yummy

Have the scrawny chickens grown any on Mimosa? When we were pitched , there was a hen with 2 chickens with hardly any feathers but they were very particular what they ate.

They were really tasty. I kind of ordered blind off the menu as I couldn’t remember what crevettes were but I had an inkling. Was very happy when that plate arrived!

Following your trip with interest, we loved our explorations of Morocco last year. You seem to have similar views to us on food and drink, so I'd recommend a meal at the winery we stayed at. Actually, the wine was a fair bit better than the food, but the atmosphere of the place made it.

We drove down to Oualidia yesterday after sorting out SIM cards in Mohammedia. 120Dhm for SIM & 15Gb of data with Maroc Telecom. We decided to use them as one of the campsite guardians said they were the best coverage if we were travelling around. Signal has been excellent so far but it’s very early days.
Camping Mimosa was fine but a bit shady on our pitch. Toilet block was a bit rundown. Looked like there were a few people staying put for a bit. 105Dhm for the night with EHU which was stable giving us 230V.
Mohammedia wasn’t really our kind of place as it was quite scruffy with lots of litter but it served its purpose as a stopover as we chase the sun & warmth.
The beach was quite nice and the surf was pretty big. We've really missed our wave watching which was a big feature of past trips to Portugal's West coast. Bit of a misty haze but it started to lift as we walked into town.

We drove south using the toll roads again as we wanted to make good progress, plus the haze seemed to come back so the views along the coast road might not have been as good as expected.

As we drove closer to our destination the countryside & weather improved significantly. Far less general detritus lying about everywhere.

The motorhome spot is a big car park and it was almost full when we arrived so we parked up in the middle row as instructed by the guardian. 40Dhm for the night with 25l of water included. It wasn’t long before the windscreen wiper man and a couple of fish sellers came to visit. First fish man had some sole fillets but they weren’t too enticing. 2nd fish man had a dorado and some prawns and I couldn’t resist. Bit of friendly haggling got him down from 150Dhm to 80Dhm

1000009748.jpg

Everybody has been really friendly so far. Lots of smiles & waves when driving about, and as we’ve come further south we have both agreed it’s got a lot better. Views like this have definitely helped!

The beach here at Oulidia is stunning with hardly any litter!
A very quiet night last night and woken this morning by the call to prayer. Such an evocative sound. I absolutely love it.

We've moved over to one of the sides now as a few people have moved on this morning. Plan for today is to wander into town and go for a walk on the beach, then chill out in the sun reading & people watching.

Not a cloud in the sky and forecast to be mid 20s and getting hotter through the week! Bring it on!

What a great day. Really settled into travel life now. Fish man came back whilst we were having our tea and toast and we requested some more Dorado and prawns. 3 small fish and 10 big prawns. Under a tenner. Can probably get for less but worth the hassle? 🤷

Had a nice chat with a couple of Brits who are detectorists, walked past the oyster shacks but decided against raw shellfish after Jimbohorlicks shellfish experience!

Then round to the lagoon, more wave and fisherman watching then up the long hill to the town.

It was hot! Did our 1st proper Moroccan shopping rather than supermarket. Soo cheap. I got some lovely looking flatbreads that looked like paratha from the tagine man who was selling them to go with the tagine but we have the fish already. 2 large round breads, that were hot still and surprising heavy. They have a course grain and look like maybe 50 percent wholemeal which I prefer to endless white holiday bread. These were 4d from the bread lady on the pavement, some Clementines, a large bunch of mini bananas (I find these so much nicer than the big ones at home) and some mini courgettes (again so much better than big fluffy ones and also cost a fortune at home and come in excess plastic packaging) It all cost about £3 in total. If so desired you could live a vegetarian life out here very very cheaply and be well fed.

Back down the hill and decided to stop for a drink on a sunny restaurant terrace and maybe some chips as we climbed that hill. Saw 6 oysters gratin on the menu for 80d so thought ok can't miss out on oysters for that price (paid a fortune for some in Brighton on Paul's birthday)
They were delicious!
1000009788.jpg

Then back to the park up and made friends with another Brit who's doing a solo travel adventure and is heading along in the same direction as us and seems very like minded (amusing Brexit sticker on his van)so we'll hopefully catch up with him again. Also met a funster at last (don't know if we have ever met one in the wild in our 3 years of travelling) A very friendly nomad2022 who gave us some great info about future places we want to visit and reassured us that the raw oysters are safe!

We then got our 1st dose of sunbathing by the van with our books. Bliss!
1000009793.jpg

Also joined by our rather gorgeous friend that we made when we 1st arrived (actually she's everybody's friend by the looks of it and I believe the same dog that befriended Jimbohorlicks when they were here)

We fed her some cheese yesterday and couldn't believe how gentle she was. Most dogs would have taken your fingers of but she delicately chews her food.
1000009755.jpg

She really enjoys a long head run and nudges you when you stop. Just like Beech used to 🥹

I've been thinking a lot about the strays here as it was something I was really worried about before coming here. That it would upset me too much but actually I've seen only kindness and patience with all the strays so far. I've seen locals feeding them from their restaurants, drivers waiting for them to move from the road where they were sunbathing and they are all docile, most look really healthy and they turn their nose up at bread. Perhaps it's different in non touristy areas? On balance I've felt that yes they have a very different life to a UK dog but not necessarily worse because they have a more natural life with freedom to roam, act as pack animals, forage for food and spend time tricking humans into feeling sorry for them just like the original domesticated dogs did a long time ago.

Hopefully we continue to see this as our travels go on but it's a relief. We will continue to do our share of spoiling along the way. Here's a few of the other dogs.

Afternoon walk to watch waves and found a cool blow hole. The 1st time it went off we jumped out of our skins as didn't know it was there.
Video won't load unfortunately.

Seafront location for mint tea or tagine 🤣

And dinner. Fish in Asian marinade, stir fry prawns and veg and flaky bread warmed with an extra spread of butter.

If you travel off on a Tuesday, I highly recommend this market a bit inland from you.

And a bit further south, this olive oil made from green olives is the tastiest I’ve ever consumed. We couldn’t stop pouring little bowl of it to dap bread in before dinner. Next time I’ll buy 10 litres!

We used to get into Essouria early and park up on the carrafour car park .do a little shop and catch a taxi into the port/ medina area 10d and the same back. Its a large car park at Carrafour . Difficult to park anywhere in Essouria. 👍

We totally copied you guys and parked at Carrefour today. Walked in, in 30 degrees heat seafront stroll, fishing port and some of the shops. Ran out of time so are now at the place you stayed and going back in tomorrow. This place is posh 👌
