A Frame Disaster

Sorry but that sounds lethal to me, as a metal projectile doing a possible 60mph, the tow hitch/a-frame becomes detached from the towing vehicle with no brakes, unless it’s a cable of 10/11/12/13mm diameter and a good anchorage on the car, that car is going to go anywhere it pleases!
That is why the modern systems use electronic braking, if any disconnection happens the electronics will brake on all four wheels.

An as for Landy Andys comments, I have reversed my toad with its electronic braking system albeit in a fairly straight line with no problems, I also do not agree with the comment that they should be banned, they are as everything, as safe as the person using and maintaining it.
The modern a frame system is a lot safer than some of the rusty land rovers seen being used to tow old farm type trailers, most with little or no brakes and heavily loaded. Does he also want them banned from the road.

I do agree that if an A frame system is on a car it should be part of the MOT test for that vehicle.

chaser my Morris set up includes a bungee cord to make sure the brake pedal fully returns when being towed. Before anyone considers this inadequate they should reflect on the World Championship speed boat racing set up. I was lucky enough to be given a day out in the European record holding catamaran. Its throttle was a bungee cord, as was its steering controls.

Not getting silly bud you asked the questions and people are answering in a way you don’t like.

Accept it and move on.

Thanks you.
Silly silly silly ooopppsss sorry Jim

Has anybody been Gased while towing an A frame asking for a friend :unsure::giggle:(y) :ROFLMAO:
Would that be with, or without..........................being robbed of a Rolex, an expensive Laptop, and an undisclosed sum of money?????????

Yours trustingly,

Jock. ;)

It is not the breakaway cable looped over, it is a secondary Bowden cable loop as an extra safety precaution. The breakaway cable is separate and links between the rear of the motorhome and the power switch on the front of the car.
So what does this secondary cable do .
What is it's diameter

Throttle return via bungee but absolutely no steering via bungee.steering is hydraulic.
You are misinformed

pelican I was not informed, I steered it. It was pieces of fibreglass controlled by elastic bands. It felt very fragile. But of course I could be mistaken if there were parts not visible to the user in the very cramped cockpit - I left some of my skin behind😂

These boats are very robust.
What was the name of the boat
Was it a model

Been into the garage , photos as promised, the cable was fitted as standard by Towtal.

Thoughtful but ashame it's not long enough to attach to tow-bar frame or chassis.

Being just long enough to drop over the towball if there were a problem with the hitch it would stay close. OK it’s an extra that Towtal fit so I use it, belt and braces maybe.

It has inspired me to fit twin safety chains long enough to reach towbar. The fit similar to unbraked trailers which also hsve a skid immediately behind hitch to prevent hitch for digging into road if detached

pelican It was a few years ago at Kingsbury Waters. It was a power boat experience. Although the catamaran won a European Championship it was the slowest and roughest boat to drive so no one else wanted more than one go in it. I had eleven drives over three hours and ended up with a hole in my leg from the bolt that held the bungee to the frame.

I set and lock my jockey wheel just low enough in a straight line to prevent digging in should it breakaway . I would not want a long safety chain as car could veer left to right out of control if unhitched.

Hence two chains

Minxy Girl your a star.
The only one whos come close to working out the emegency braking in an electricly braked A frame.
And if fitted to the car in question would have applied the brake
Lenny secondary cable is ideal as described and fitted BUT that is most definitely NOT the place to use as a main breakaway point
All the extra cables and chains suggested here would not have helped if the frame detachment happens at the car end.
