2 Go To Beni ...

Another couple of days have whizzed by for us here in sunny Beni, and we’ve had two days of walking and cycling.

Yesterday we walked past the market and into town - the market was in full force when we walked into town, but reminded us of New Delhi on the walk home ...

Eddie assured us it would all be cleared up and I have to say there was no evidence of it in the market square, but quite a bit of plastic left in the hedges, and surrounding areas.

We stopped for tapas in a different bar (our usual being closed), where there was a ‘Bon viveur’ host, who welcomed us in, congratulated me on my Spanish, gave us tiger mussel and craB stick tapas, which were delicious, and generally exuded good humour and bonhomie.

He then broke into an impromptu Julio Iglasias karaoke session with a Dutch Frau, who lapped it up; her husband catching the rendition on video.

We all thoroughly enjoyed it, and shouted many an encore. However we noticed his wife was not so pleased with the performance and upon his return to his place behind bar, she threw off her apron, put on her coat and walked out - leaving our nonplussed host elbow deep in half cooked tapas and a bar full of hungry, thirsty revellers!

We left him to his fate and walked back to Villasol for an hour before retiring to the van.

Today we cycled to the shopping mall at Finestrat - after fighting our way through the masses wandering along the front, we picked up the ‘cycle path’ which is in the middle of a four lane highway, and like no other cycle path I’ve ever been on before!

One shopping mall being much like another - none of which hold any interest for me, we ended up in Decathlon where we stocked up on quick dry polo shirts and shorts before cycling back and wandering over to a Torretta.

Can’t think what sport this mannequin is demonstrating ....

We were planning on having a salad for tea, but were happy to join Barry and Jackie @Fredfox, Jock and Graham @SUGGY on their trip to Ali Baba’s for a brilliant curry, 3 courses (including Carte d’Or ice cream dessert) for €20.

Life’s too short for salad when there’s a good Madras on offer....

We finished the evening in Beer Friends with Ed @Sheddy.

Today was the beginning of our ‘must do’ list before we leave. Cycling to Finestrat. So that’s done.

Jackie told us about the Flamenco dancing on Thursday at Cisne market. This will be the second adventure - it may be the third, but that depends on whether we get up early enough to catch the one and only bus to Guadalest between now and Thursday - I can’t see it coming off somehow ....

Hasta Luego Funsters, oh and Derek @Emmit - you can call off the search party ;)

@cliffandger

To misquote Liam Neeson, "I will look for you, I will find you and I will take a £10 note off you.":)

Well Funster Amigos, as I said yesterday, Cisne market and flamenco tomorrow will be our third outing this week - and it will be!

After a lazy day yesterday, we were up with the lark today (9.15) and on the bus stop before 10 to catch the bus to Guadalest. The bus was due at 10.10 and eventually arrived at 10.40 - just before we were going to give up and walk home, and we had a lovely drive up the mountain. I have a newfound respect for our neighbour Andy @Wools who cycles up to Guadalest, and comes back without breaking a sweat - and to think we (I) was thinking of doing the same! My ears were popping and we’de only got halfway up!

We got off the bus and headed towards the museums - the museum of torture was closed, and having already visited what I consider the BEST museum - in Croatia (yes - remember Froggyland Funster Friends?) we didn’t feel like paying to see mammoth structures painted on grains of rice.

We walked around the walls and looked down on what looked like a very depleted reservoir ...

... before sitting in the sun with a beer and lunch.

While people watching (and I noticed that the local population are, on the whole, very short .....)

we counted six Motorhomes that turned into the barrier operated car park where the parking attendant had to get out of her booth each time, instruct them to reverse back out onto the street, and go through the temporary barrier (operated by yet another very short chap) and into the Aires next door!

I have to say, it made for an entertaining hour, before we wandered back to catch the bus back to Beni.

Sadly, I didn’t have enough time to visit the Salt and Pepper Pot museum - so that treat will be kept for next year!

Guadalest is very small, pretty, and a Mecca for leather handbags and ceramic goods- much like most Spanish hilltop towns really ....

We finished off a lovely day by cycling down to the Blue Whale for dinner - which was lovely.

Tomorrow - Cisne Market, Flamenco and Paella and The Corner Bar Quiz.

It’s taken us 4 weeks to ramp up the energy to go sightseeing, but thankfully we have next week to calm things down again before our journey home!

Why do they have that arrangement at Guadalest? I remember that awkward back out onto the road and then debating what to do about the yellow barrier to the aire parking. No sign of any attendants when we were there.!

Is there another torture museum in Benidorm? LOL

I've seen manu of them in different places of Spain. I end up thinking they all are the same opening them in very crowded places (not necesarilly for turist from abroad, but also for Spaniards)

Looks like the colonic irrigation team are on the hunt again.

Well, I have to say, and it’s becoming a recurrent theme in this thread .... what a brilliant day wehad yesterday, here in Beautiful Beni!

We woke up to a warm sunny morning, with no rush or early start bus trip, and after consulting Google Maps worked out that after a leisurely breakfast, we could walk to El Cisne Flea Market. 30 minutes later found us in the midst of corridors of antiques, tat, car boot rejects, and strangely enough, many many peluquerias (men and women’s) full of people waiting for haircuts. I looked and looked, but could find nothing that I wanted to take home, but @tonka Steve - I put your name on these two little beauties ...

We found seats in the bar and after a recommendation from @Fredfox Jackie, prepared to be entertained - and we were.

The first entertainer sang non stop, for 2 hours, singing all the old stuff and accompanied (whether he wanted it or not) by an 83 year old ‘lady’ and he did a brilliant set.

EDC9CCAB-8FA2-44EC-9AE1-BD0483B1CC88.jpeg

Cliff swore he spotted a 5 o’clock shadow as he walked past with our paella ...

We sang all the old favourites whilst picking weird bits of breast bones from the chicken chunks, and all cheered when the ‘lady’ had a wardrobe malfunction, but keeping calm and carrying on, she waved her undies round her head, in perfect time to Hi Ho Silver Lining!

He really earned his money, he wasn’t the best, but the singing was live, And we enjoyed every minute.

Flamenco came next, and it was brilliant.

It was a fantastic show. We thought he was quite chubby, and by the amount of flamenco he did, he should have been stick insect thin!

They had almost got to the end, and we almost escaped, but when in El Cisne ...

After a brilliant couple of hours we walked back to the van, sat out for an hour and then wandered up to the Corner Bar for the quiz .., which went quite well .... WHAT AM I SAYING .... WE WON!!!!!

@quickweh Pauline and Mike @JockandRita Rita, and us = The Winning Team ...

Alright, It did come down to a tie break question - and luckily I knew that Al Jolson was the first person to speak in a talking movie - but WE WON!!!

Here’s the winning team on the victory March Home!

Another lovely day - the sun is out - the birds are singing and we are just about to sit out and chill ....

Love a Thursday at El Cisne. I will pass on the Tonka toys, they look about as old and worn out as me. :D

Ps. Chicken ?? Usually it's rabbit or one of them dogs you heard barking all night ;)

Easy day today. Walked into town in glorious sunshine and stopped in our No. 2 tapas bar.

We picked this one because we fancied calamari....

El racion to share - and the garlic mayonnaise was made fresh while the calamari was cooking - delicious!

I asked for a photo, and although he was a tad shy ....

He gave me his details to put the photo on Instagram - unfortunately, I have no idea how to do this, so MHF may be the extent of his notoriety!

We stopped off for a coffee on the walk back ...

We spent a happy hour watching the ‘Potato Gang’ at work.

It was incredible to see just how many people were scammed out of their money. The craziest thing was that the two main scumbags swapped roles twice in the hour - from pea hider to punter - it was so obvious that all six of them were working together.

So one of the downsides of Beni that we’ve seen every time we walk down the front, showing that the police aren’t very proactive in stopping them.

Chilling in the van now - finding it difficult to believe we only have one more week here!

As you know Geraldine & Cliff, Rita and I were on the Playa today also, having walked much of the way with you both. :)
We witnessed two punters being scammed. One was a young Brit lad with two mates. When he realised that he had been stung, he tried to protest, but the rest of the scammers pushed him away, and warned him off.
The other punter who was scammed, was a young Spanish chap (with his partner). As soon as he realised the situation, he too protested and was pushed away, however, he wasn't palmed off so easily, and began to shout out loud informing all around of the scam.................assisted by an elderly woman who had just come off the beach with her windbreak, making her way back to the apartments opposite. Things got to such a stage, that the scammers ran after the young Spaniard who was still very vocal, and they appeared to refund him some (or all) of his money, whereupon, he quietened down and moved on. Meanwhile, other scammers protested at the elderly lady, who by this time, was now inside the locked and secure compound to the apartments. Good on her. (y)
I absolutely detest these scammers....................................but their actions are so obvious, it has to take a greedy (or gullible) so and so to be taken in by them. :(

Cheers,

Jock. :)

And a lovely stroll along the prom with you both it was :)

It was an argument that drew our attention to the scammers too Jock. Two girls were shouting at the scammer with the backpack, and after a couple of minutes he gave them their money and they walked off happy.

What I found incredible was that straight after that altercation, they retrieved their cardboard ‘stage’ from the beach where they’de thrown it and set about fleecing new, gullible/greedy punters!

I too spotted their cardboard "stage" hiding on the beach underneath the Playa wall, and really wanted to jump on the blooming thing to squash it flat..............but there were lookouts about.

Whilst watching the scammers at work, I also observed that when one handed over the "stage" to the next scammer, wads of money was also handed over.

For those not in the know..........the first mistake to make is to stop and look interested, (risk of being pick pocketed). The absolute "NO NO" is to accept the €50 note that they try to force into your hand to take part. Resist vehemently.

Oh, and for those in the slightest bit interested, don't think it's only folks of Mediterranean or Eastern European origin who are the scammers. They have very good english speaking Dutch scammers working as part of the team. :sneaky:

Stay safe, if in the vicinity. (y)

Well, another easy day today - they’re getting to be a habit!

The sun was blazing down and we spent the morning sunbathing and discussing the merits of lekky bikes with our neighbours.

We’re still undecided a) because we are trying to use solely peddle power for as long as we can, and b) hearing what our neighbours paid for theirs, Cliff would never want to go out of sight of the locked up bikes, meaning we would never get off and walk anywhere!

We left our neighbours to cycle up to The Cross, and walked into town and along the prom - which was packed (I wouldn’t fancy being here in August)

We saw stag parties galore, 40th Birthday revellers, (in my day it was a self catered party on a Saturday night down the social club!), fat men in pink tutus on mobiscooters and @JockandRita 4 potato scam crews! they are SOOOOO obviously scamming scum, but still they had crowds of hapless punters eager to be ripped off!

Our tapas bar, along with all the others, was full of people, but we bagged the last table and enjoyed two tapas each (well it was Saturday after all!)

We wandered back for another hour in the sun before heading down to the bar, where I was a girl alone amongst talk of rugby and golf, until Pauline @quickweh joined me after her Zumba class, and we had a chinwag in the sunshine until ‘The Match’ began. As I’ve said before, we’re not rugby fans, so we left the bar, with England in the lead, and headed back to get changed to go out and eat.

We headed up to the Ali Baba and had a lovely meal, even better than last weeks.

We got chatting to a lovely couple, who have a caravan on Villamar. They used to have a Motorhome, but found it more economical to sell the van, site a caravan here and fly down for six months every year.

They have 3 2CVs (one of which is kept here) and 2 Harley Davidsons, which they tour on in the Summer. I thought I did well, riding a 300cc Honda (albeit an automatic), but she rode a Harley, and was at most 5.3” and 6 stone!

I was feeling a tad inadequate until she confided that riding it was easy, but she really had to think about where she parked it - we both agreed that parking it front ways in on a downhill slope was a real no-no!

We’ve found in Beni, as we’ve found everywhere we’ve travelled, that striking up a conversation with people, even for an hour over a curry, and sharing lives and experiences enriches every trip we take in the van.

Steve, our curry neighbour, checking on the rugby, told us that Wales had won - I think they were as ardent rugby fans as us ... suffice to say it didn’t spoil our appetite for the delicious Chicken Madras!

We’re off to the (so I’ve been told) Up Market Albir Market tomorrow to buy all my Hollibobs pressies to take home, after which we’ll hopefully meet up with Sandra @daveandsan whose here on her holidays.

Before I sign off for tonight I have to say a big thank you to @Jaws John for sorting a Dutchman’s drone, and then having to deliver it back when the Dutchman (after being told it had been sorted) completely failed to go over to Torretta to collect it!!!!

John turned up this morning on his bike, drone in hand to return it to its owner. We’re sorry you had to see Cliff still with his ‘breathe rite’ strip on his nose John!

That’s the last time, when a Dutch neighbour tells us his mate has bought a drone with no instructions, that Cliff says ‘I know a man who can fix it ....’

We’re still undecided a) because we are trying to use solely peddle power for as long as we can, and b) hearing what our neighbours paid for theirs, Cliff would never want to go out of sight of the locked up bikes, meaning we would never get off and walk anywhere!
Pop round the corner and have a chat and a look at our A S Bikes, in comparison. :) The Dutch and German E-Bikes are top quality, but are used most of the time, whereas, our E-Bikes are only used when on holiday.

As I’ve said before, we’re not rugby fans, so we left the bar, with England in the lead,
You missed the best part of the game, ie, the second half when Wales showed England how it's done.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Hello peeps, just caught up with this thread. We’re arriving @ Villasol tomorrow thanks to Jock @JockandRita who got us booked in. Thanks again Jock and see you all tomorrow (y)

Well, what a lovely couple of sunny days we've had.

@Just smiffy will be pleased to know that both have included a trip to Albir. Yesterday’s was a minus but plus sort of trip.

Minus no 1: The market, although less packed, didn’t offer anything better than our own market in Beni.

Minus no 2: All the restaurants and bars were busy, so we went to the bar we had visited with the Funsters on our trip to The Lighthouse.

Minus no 3: We ordered battered calamari and ‘patatas a la ailioli’ = garlic potatos.

Minus no 4: 2 minutes after ordering I switched onto internet and found a message from @JockandRita inviting us to the Tapinaki restaurant. Sadly, having ordered, we had to decline their invite ...

Minus no 5: The tapas turned up. I have to say, the calamari was fine. Not sure whether it was calamari, but as it was the second time we’ve eaten it here, and both times the fish had the consistency of cod — Nothing elasticky or tough as with calamari we’ve eaten elsewhere, we thought it was fine.

The ‘patatas a la ailoilo’ were however not as good. A plate of chips. Half cooked, barely golden, chips. No oily garlicky, oniony sauce as we were anticipating. Just Chips. But ...........

Plus No 1: the chips were accompanied by this ...

C024522C-7A28-4B7B-AA7B-9BD0AB6961FA.jpeg

The mayonnaise that made up the ‘a la ailioli’ bit of the menu ....

Disheartened at first, but determined to have our garlic patatas, we squirted the mayo onto the chips .... OMG!!!!! - I will be filling the empty spaces under my van floor with this - it is absolutely delicious! We’ve bought the French stuff before, but it can’t compare to this.

I’m now desperately hoping that Mercadona sell it!

So that was yesterday. Today has been equally as good - but you all knew I was going to say that didn’t you?

Albir again - this time to fix Cliff’s bike.

After trying to fix the gears himself, he admitted defeat and took it into ‘ebici’, on the old road onto Albir.

The chap talks perfect English and knew exactly what the problem was.

He had the parts in stock - a combined brake lever and gear change, 2 new inner brake cables and set it all up for €31.75. It took 45 minutes to do, and it works perfectly.

We got back and went to Torretta to welcome @BreweryDave. It was lovely to see him, and we look forward to welcoming Jackie on Wednesday.

The afternoon sun was waning and the girls moved chairs to stay warm as the sun went down.

We decided to use our Quiz Winners Ticket at The Corner Bar, and were joined by @JockandRita, @SUGGY and Rosie (I was wearing shorts and it was getting cold so Rosie leant me a pair of trousers to wear - and they fitted!!! OK they were hipsters on me, but they fitted - and she's Tiny!!! I’m still smiling ...) @Ukbandit Lyn and Graham, @Fredfox Jackie and Barry.

We had a lovely meal (although the batter on the fish was interesting, and most of it was left on the plate), but a good night was had by all and we wish Jackie and Barry a safe trip home tomorrow. Looking forward to getting to know you both better next year!

As I said, we had the Quiz Winners Ticket ... it was in his wallet somewhere ...

We don’t do the lottery, but if we did, he wouldn’t be allowed to keep the ticket ....

......

3CEDDB27-1389-47D8-9DED-7575210BFE99.jpeg

Jacqie, the bar owner, spotted the ticket in between the forest of receipts from B & Q, Screwfix, Wickes, Asia Bazar, Avenida Ferreteria ... he throws nothing away ...

Well, the sun is shining and I have a spare 5 minutes to catch up on this thread.

Yesterday was a different day to many in that The Three Gs met up for a jam session outside @SUGGY s van.

I had a brilliant time with the lads, strumming in the sun, until we were asked to ‘turn it down a bit’ by a close neighbour!

Graham pointed out that all three instruments were acoustic and didn’t have volume controls on them - but disgruntled neighbour may have been referring to my singing!

We’d had a good session anyway, so we were happy to pack up and leave our comeback gig for another day, in another field somewhere!

We met up later at Torretta before adjourning to Ali Baba’s (again) for a curry with @JockandRita, @Ukbandit Lynn and Graham, and @SUGGY Rosie.

The meal was, yet again delicious, and we then moved onto watch Pablo (for a third time) at the House of Rock.

He was as brilliant as usual. He had just started his act when I spotted @daveandsan Sandra and her friend Noreen walk through the door. I started to wave frantically to attract her attention across the dance floor - Pablo spotted this and jumping off the stage walked across and tapped Sandra on the shoulder and pointed to us as she was sitting down at a table - she still didn’t see us, so he stood her up and ushered her across the floor, pulled out a chair at our table and sat her down!

Not content with giving Sandra her 5 seconds of fame, Pablo asked if anyone had a birthday and sitting behind Cliff I pointed to him (it’s his birthday tomorrow) so for the rest of the evening he was Pablo’s fall guy .... so a good night was had by all!

E94F94F3-64D9-4F37-B0B2-0EB4FA701E44.jpeg

We left after Pablo had finished and went on to The Tropical, where there was an Eagles tribute duo - they were brilliant. To be able to sit in a bar, and listen to decent entertainment for the price of a drink leaves any other holiday resort standing.

Today has been equally full on.

A trip to the market for last minute necessities, before our usual cycle ride into town and a visit to our no 2 tapas bar, no 1 being closed on Wednesday.

My search for garlic mayonnaise has been fruitless, so unless the Mercadona Hypermarket on the way out of Beni turns up trumps, I’ll have to take @estresao up on his recipe.

I was going to get a kitchen gadget to make it, as suggested by @Ukbandit Lynn, but then I looked it up on t’internet  - I think I’ll stick with the shop bought stuff and spend the money on a five stringed Uke ;)

Safe travels to Graham and Lynn and hope everything went well for Lois today, and that you are now proud great grandparents :) Graham, you could use that gadget for gourmet baby meals!

Anyway, I digress. We got back from town, and I wandered down to Villasol Bar to have a coffee with @daveandsan Sandra and Noreen, who’ve been making the most of their time in Beni and getting out and about every day. They were last seen this evening heading to The Red Lion Karaoke Bar! Hope to see you and Dave here next year Sandra.

We’ve had a lovely evening, meeting up with @JockandRita, @Badknee Paul and Angela, @quickweh Mike and Pauline, daughter Jane and grandson Joe at the China Garden for yet another Asian meal. Jane and Joe are here for a week, and I don’t think their feet have touched the ground yet! Mike and Joe went to Guadalest today and the Torture Museum was open - some people are just born lucky!

Although the meal was nice, @SUGGY - I have to say I prefer The Wok.

We moved on to The Tropical to watch the Neil Diamond tribute act (who was half of last night’s Eagle Tribute duo), and very good he was too.

@BreweryDave and Jacqui were there, but sadly Jacqui was suffering from jet lag - I’m sure she’ll be back to her old self soon, and the quiet, subdued girl we saw tonight will be replaced by the Jacqui we all know and love... ;)

We stayed on to watch the Whitney Houston tribute act, who was also brilliant. I suppose if you’re singing the same songs every night, you can perfect them, and with sound technology being what it is, a good voice can be raised to a great voice.

That said, she was very very good, and even gave the mic over to a girl in the audience to sing the main ‘belt it out’ bit of ‘I have nothing’ - very generous of her I thought. As expected her encore was ‘I will Always Love You’, to which she did herself proud. These Beni performers certainly earn their money. Rita saw her in the loo where she’d changed out of a full length sequinned dress into a sequinned dress that barely covered her ‘assets’ and she was heading straight off to another bar to perform as part of Sister Act!

Anyway - What a night! The perfect end to six weeks of fun in the sun. What am I saying - the end is nigh, but we still have our last visit to no 1 tapas bar, and our last quiz tomorrow tonight .....

Brilliant!

I did, however, have a mental image of Whitney being the other half of The Eagles tribute and having a quick shave between shows :-)

Sounds like you’ve had an absolute blast Ger, birthday wishes to Cliff and safe travels back.
We are now in south Vietnam. Hopefully catch up with you guys late March xx

And being Beni, that’s probably happened more than once Janine! :ROFLMAO:

Boy has that 6 weeks gone quickly:eek:

I know Phil - it’s flown by! Have I tempted you to join us next year.... ?
