2 Go To Beni ...

He asked me if I wanted L, XL, or XXL! I wish I’d known how to say ‘just a size that physically matches the label please senor’!
Yes, the size labels bear no relation to anything . One makers xl is another's medium. & if you look hard enough many go to xxxxxL.Some ,I noticed at the weekend, now print its as 3xL or 2xL rather than all those x's. People think they are smaller then:rolleyes:

Hello Funster Friends - I have been very remiss with my thread for which I apologise. I could say we’ve been really busy, but that would be a fib - we’ve had a very laid back few days.

I didn’t go shopping on Thursday (dicky tummy, so thought better if it). Consequently I still don’t have sandals or pashminas, but we did walk into the Old Town later in the day for the black pudding, chorizo and jalapeño tapas - and I have to say it didn’t disappoint!

We went to The Corner Bar that evening for the quiz. MHF fielded two teams and I think there were only 2 or 3 points between us. We didn’t win however - but we had a good night and I think if we had been 1 team of 11 we’de have cleaned up!

Friday started cold and overcast so we spent the morning in the van before wandering down to the bar for a musical meet with the Two Grahams @SUGGY and @Ukbandit.

We played to a small, but appreciative audience, and once my knees stopped knocking I enjoyed it. Look out for The 3Gees in a field near you soon!

Today we set off to Altea in another attempt to find the Old Town. We walked up to catch the bus, but were met by @quickweh Pauline and Mike, who had been waiting in vain for the illusive No. 10 for a while. We gave up and decided to cycle, but as we were near the Mas-y-Mas we decided to pop in and get some provisions.

Cliff had gone to get chicken thighs and by the time I got there he was in deep conversation with the lovely Spanish butcher lady.

‘I was going to get these’ he said, pointing to our usual plastic wrapped boneless, skinless thighs, ‘but the lady’s said, she doesn’t like the plastic wrapped ones and has some fresh ones that she’ll skin and cut the bones out for us - much nicer’.

‘OK’ says I, following them to the butchery counter. Unfortunately there were no thighs, ‘bone in’ or otherwise, just whole chickens, which she proceeded to joint with expert ease, smiling at us all the while - before piling the whole chicken, carcass and all, into a bag, still smiling!

Now I knew his vocabulary of spoken Spanish wasn’t vast, but I now know his level of understanding, in butchery terms at least, is zero!

We did have success in finding Altea Old Town, which was very quaint (and high up).

We got to the church and had 10 minutes to look around it before it closed. Not a disaster as there were no relics to see, so we adjourned to the Plaza bar for refreshments.

Too early for beer so he had a very flamboyant ice cream and I had hot chocolate and ice cream!

Back to La Torretta for a quick meet up with Funsters and then back to the van for telly and baked chicken and baguette!

Robert and Catie are here on Monday so we’re doing a Vegan Restaurant Rekkie tomorrow - wish us luck!

Hope that chicken is ok, not being chilled as you meander & cycle throughout half of Spain ...

Ger loving your Beni holiday !
Thanks for sharing.
If you don’t see a fake Kipling bag I have a real one you can have . I havnt used it much as it has too many pockets and I loose everything!

Oh yes it’s a shocking pink!!:LOL:View attachment 279549
Anthea - I’ve just spotted your post - so sorry to have missed it! I love the bag and will happily donate to the MSG charity to get my mitts on it! I know what you mean about too many pockets - it took me 5 minutes today to find where i’d put my purse to pay €2.60 for the tapas and wine! I think the poor barman was almost going to take pity on us and give us it for free!

Stephen - we ate it last night - baked after marinading (while we were socialising in La Torretta) in butter, olive oil, garlic, schirratchi and tandoori spices. It was very nice, but not my usual cuts of chicken!

It’s also the first time in years I’ve thrown a chicken carcass away instead of turning it into stock! :(

It’s FTGH ! When you get back pm me with your address and I will post it to you!
Enjoy your tapas!!

Sunday was cleaning day - van now (mostly) dust free all washing done and ready for our visitors.

We celebrated with a cycle into town and our usual tapas. After walking around the Old Town we wandered back to Tapas Alley and Cliff suggested the bar next door (I know - he is a very fickle friend....) well - we were repaid with sour rosado, no Rioja and brick hard bocadlllos!

Back to the van for a barby - the jalapeño burgers that Cliff’s butcher maiden warned him were mucho caliente y picante’ weren’t hot or spicy at all - another misunderstanding on his part!

Just off to pick up Rob and Catie. Sun is blazing through the hire car windscreen-

She looks so normal. Get her round to the tapas bars and introduce her to food. After all, you don't want weird grandchildren. Tapas and a bottle of good Rioja could speed up the process.

Careful Brian you were almost complimentary for the start of your post, don't spoil a lifetime of put downs.

And....... We’re BACK!!!! Rob and Catie were dropped off at the airport this morning after three fun filled days in Beni!

Their first impressions were not good - ‘look at all the high rise hotels.....’ ‘Yes’ I said, ‘but the skyline is just the same in New York, Hong Kong, or Shanghai, but would you get a Rioja and tapas for €1.30?’ (probably, yes, but at least here you know you’re eating fish/pork or egg ...) ;)

‘Look at the tacky shops and bars ...’ ‘Yes’ I said, ‘but wander down through the town and meet the sea’.... the sun was shining, it was a warm afternoon and they did - ‘Oh, this is lovely - I never thought it would be like this!’

We walked from one end of the prom to the other - and ended up in the Old Town and our tapas bar (we’de already checked that there was a ‘vegan’ tapas available for Catie...) and they were sold.

We ate in a lovely Indian restaurant in Albir, (picked because of its vegan options), but we’ll be going back there for another meal - The Bay Leaf, can be thoroughly recommended.

We took them to see Pablo Bloom on Tuesday night and they enjoyed him so much they’re in negotiations with him to do a stint at their wedding - which we’ve been told is the 9th May 2020! We had a brilliant night - singing and dancing until 1.00am - they didn’t want to get up on Wednesday!

When the did emerge, we left them to wander down to the market, and then drove to Decathlon to stock up on golf shirts etc before driving back to Albir and the Cartoon Gastro Bar for a delicious rose veal burger (me) steak (Rob and Cliff) and Vegan burger for Catie - another good choice of restaurant.

We came back to the van and the boys went to the bar to watch the footie and Catie and I stayed in the van chilling.

It was lovely to have them here and I think their impressions of Beni have been well and truly changed for the better!

We dropped them off at the airport this morning and decided to visit Alicante before I had the inspired thought - I wonder if there are any religious relics around here .... @Anthea M - at last, this thread is complete ....!!!!

The Santa Faz Monestery - I couldn’t believe my luck. The Holy Face - I had seen an image of it in Rye (and those of you that followed our trip to Kent a couple of years ago will remember this amazing image)

We read on t’internet that Veronica’s hankie was in the monastery - the very same one that was represented in Rye! The very same one that had wiped His Brow - we parked up and we’re there before the doors opened! A priest came along, unlocked the doors and welcomed us in - but whereas Rye was amazing (with the winking eye) we were a little disappointed - this was it ...

So nothing to see. The shatterproof glass was vandalised a couple of years ago and satanic things were scratched on the box - I think ‘666’ was etched on the box before the female perpetrator was caught and marched off to goodness knows what punishment!

We drove home to a hearty ham salad baguette and a leisurely couple of hours at Villasol bar.

We joined @quickweh Pauline and Mike at the Corner Bar Quiz tonight and got second place - what a team - Mike pulled a blinder with at least three answers that we’de never heard of and Pauline plucked Ava Gardner from mid air as Frank Sinatra’s first wife!

We loved having our boy and his girl here, but it’s lovely to have the van to ourselves again, and so tomorrow starts our final three weeks of chilling in this brill place - we intend to make the most of every minute!

Yay some relics at last( although a tad disappointing)still 3 weeks to find some more!!

You seem to be spending more time in Albir....

The bay leaf, I have reviews on google of this lovely restaurant, just around the corner from cap-blanch where I stay....
The best curry I’ve had in Spain and more...(y)

Have fun...:D

Bit of a wasted day today. We had to take the car back, so did some last minute shopping, including returning to Decathlon to buy a pencil golf club bag (him) cheap fleeces (me).

We got totally lost on the way back and ended up in the streets of The Old Town - chaos reigned, and we took about an hour to get back! We finally got to the car hire office at 1.45 - they closed at 1.30 and opened again at 4 - so we missed this afternoon’s session at La Torretta :(

It hasn’t been all bad, the sun has shone all day, so we had a nice walk back through the town and a chilled evening in front of the telly.

Hoping for a more energetic day tomorrow!

Well, what a lovely lazy day we’ve had today. We woke up to a glorious sunshiny day with cloudless blue skies.

I felt a stint of housework was in order, so I got the 12v car hoover out and went right through the van - this took all of 4 minutes, after which I sat out in the sun with a well deserved orange juice, coffee and three chapters of Pride and Prejudice. I know the BBC adaptation word for word as it’s my Wednesday night ‘watch’ when I get back from ukes and Cliff’s down the pub playing darts, but it’s only about the fifth time of reading the book - so, although I know very well how it ends, it’s still a brilliant read!

Cliff could have been playing boules (or whatever the Spanish equivalent is) as he’de been invited by our Dutch neighbour, but he declined the invitation, preferring to fiddle with the van - I’ve given up asking what he fiddles with, and suggested he’d have been better employed playing with his boules and his Dutch neighbours!

We wandered down to say goodbye to Funster Friends @johnandi who left this morning. It was lovely to meet them and their friends Peter and Elaine, and I feel sure we’ll meet up in a field somewhere soon. Safe trips to both couples.

We pondered on cycling to Guadalest, but having no clear idea of where it was, chatted to Andrew next door, whose a keen cyclist. He does Guadalest when he wants an easy day, but pointed out it’s about 600m above sea level, and maybe we should catch the bus that goes there most days ....

We therefore bestirred ourselves to cycle into town and weave our way through the Saturday crowds along the seafront and into our tapas bar.

The seafront was indeed thronging with happy holidaymakers - the age demographic seems to be lowered every weekend by the influx of Stags and Hens and this weekend was no exception. We don’t frequent The Strip after dark, so dont see the possible states they get into, but even dressed in fluorescent pink and green tutu’s the stags seem very well behaved during daylight hours!

The Old Town was buzzing, and we had the last two seats at the bar. We were going to have two tapas each today, but mama had obviously cooked up a Saturday Special - a chorizo and jalapeño bocadillo - so we had that instead. ‘Es muy caliente Senora!’ her daughter warned us. Ok we said, and waited to have our sinuses cleared - but nothing, nada, zero heat!

We had the same experience in India - ‘It is very spicy Sir, .... it is exceedingly hot Madam’ - and ... nothing, the mildest curries we’d ever eaten!

I think my cooking over the last 40 odd years has obviously killed off any heat receptors we had!

Notwithstanding the zero caliente experience it was delicious, and we paid our compliments to mama, who peeped through the multicoloured multi plastic strip curtain and waved us a cheery adios as we left. I think the whole family will shed a tear when we leave .....

We wandered down to Villasol Terrace to meet up with the Funsters and it was lovely to welcome @DLT Julia and David, who are here for a cheeky week away.

It got a bit chilly and the rugby was just about to start on the telly so they all adjourned inside to bag front row seats.

Not being rugby fans (I know - we’ve tried - but we obviously have no Celtic blood in either of us) - we wandered back to the van for a Barby.

So another lovely day has gone by. There is one black cloud though. I think Spanish TV thinks we’ve already Brexited - there are no British programmes on the telly!

Oh well - back to my book - ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife’. See I told you I knew it word for word ......;)

Sounds like a good day again ! What’s your pitch number I have a map of the campsite!?
