I have a key fob with my phone number on it.wigh a finders reward. If someone were to find them I would advise a different adress for posting or go to pick them up.
If the van was close to the lost keys though they only have to click the fob to flash the lights to find the vehicle.

In our case the keys carried on the van are all non fob keys, we just use the central locking function. Somebody going vehicle to vehicle might arouse suspicion.
I note your point about the post code, and might alter that to one of the off springs address, the keys could well be mislaid reasonably close to home, not just abroad.
People do take far more risk, I noted on a kayaking trip recently a brand new V.W. Transporter parked in a car park ready for when the owner got off the river at that parking point. The various roof racks and visual clues of paddling kit on show inside the van gave it away as to it's purpose for being there. We were sheltering behind it out of the wind waiting for our lift to arrive when the keys to this new van were spotted sitting on top of the front nearside tyre!!! No one showed up all the time we were there.

A bit tricky if you're unlucky and it's recovered with the keys! If you have told the insurance and police you didn't leave them with it you could be done for fraud although very unlikely

Let’s face it- the police are not going to recover anything and even if they do it will be by mistake or long after the event.

Officer - I left my keys on my kitchen table and went to the loo.

When I came out my motorhome was gone.

As was the thief and any chance of catching him or her.

If they were dropped and someone saw that, all they have to do is follow you until you realise the keys are missing. Then, when you go off to see if you can find the keys, they drive away in your pride and joy.

We do have a spare set of keys with us at all times and if we can't take them with us, we have a spot in the van to keep them, made by me. Of course, someone could find them if they are determined and have enough time, but that is not a thief's normal modus operandi. In and out quick. And for that, we leave a £10 or 10€ not in view once in the van. I figure they may take that as a win.

I can't do that on the car as it locks the fuel filler flap too, so I central lock the lot once filled up.

I tie different colours ribbons round keys for the different vehicles. It makes the keys easier to find in either a handbag or a pocket.

The trouble with that is if your van is stolen ( they don't need keys to do that) the insurance company will want you to hand in 2 sets of keys.

On my previous motorhome I bolted a small metal keysafe with digital lock to the chassis. In it I kept a key for the hab door and the Fiamma security lock. Elsewhere secreted around the van were spare ignition key plus keys for two steering wheel locks. I did wonder whether, in the event it was stolen, the insurance company would say I'd left keys in it. Haven't done the same with my current vehicle as it has two separate alarm fobs as well.
