Any Funsters based in Devon that are good with fish?
We have a 300 litre tank in the Showroom and we are going to put Clown Loach's and Discus in there. We also have a 1048L Tank on order 96" long! This is going to house Tropical.
However whilst I can sell a van, I am not great with Fish!
Pointers, tip's and advise would be welcome!

If your going into marine fish ie coral fish then my advice is don’t, They should be left where they are not flown around the world to die in a tank with incorrect water quality etc, Amazion type fish can be breed in captivity so slightly less against the grain.

Discus are difficult to look after. Do you have anyone who will look after the tank when it is set up?

Discus fish are tropical fish, not sure about clown loach.

So both tanks need to be heated, filtered and airated.

Clown loaches are also tropical fresh water fish and also require frequent water changes.

Both species will require quite a lot of work.

I used to have a large marine setup, avoid like the plague!

One small error and they all die, don’t ask how I know. 🤦🏼 They are very, very sensitive to any change in temperature or water quality, you also need a reverse osmosis water setup. They look wonderful, but take so much work and care.

If going tropical, have 2 heaters in a large tank to heat it evenly and prevent one heater doing all the work if slightly different temps. Also go for one with 2 filters, that way you can wash and clean one and not worry about the bacterial filtration being killed by tap water or by accident.

You will need an aerator, I tried it without and it was no good.

The bigger the tank, the better. They keep the water more stable, don’t forget a timer for the light so it goes dark too.

I miss mine, good luck.

eight years in theory, a newby in practice!!!
Any reputable aquatics shop won't sell you discus unless you know what you're doing, they won't last long otherwise. Pretty specialised type of fish to keep. I'd recommend keeping several shoals of tetras or barbs in your 300 ltr tank, but even then. you HAVE to know the basics. Been keeping tropical fish all my life and have heard of countless people buying expensive aquariums and giving up after 6 months because the fish keep dying 'for no reason'! There's no such thing as 'no reason' ;) There's a lot more to it than meets the eye.
I could write a book about fishkeeping and many have, it can be a steep learning curve. A beautiful aquarium can add a lot to a room, but it takes work and knowledge.
Go to a good aquatic shop, they are always hobbyists, and ask if they can recommend someone to get it up and running while you're learning the basics. You'll learn so much from someone who knows what they're doing because they'll have the tanks residents welfare at heart (y)

But they are fish so who really cares? I don’t

Along with all the other thinks I kill, I kill to eat and I buy slaughtered ready to eat. Never had a nice Dover Sole and prayed for its soul!

Not sure anyone mentioned marine anyway, and if it were marine it could be a handful of crabs and a Blenny. From a rockpool thousand of yards from Simons place

I haven’t kept fish for years, but I did progress to having discus and clown loach for a while. They were good tank companions but both types of fish require exact water conditions and good filtration. At the time I had RO for preparing the water and had a large external filter system. Neither fish are ideal for novice fish keepers or immature filter systems imo especially discus. clown loach were my favourite of all the fish I ever kept, they were comical, entertaining and would dance up and down at the front glass for ages. Clown loach can have an alarming habit of resting on their back. Cue thinking they are dead!

I agree with going to a reputable shop and asking for advice, it’s best to stock your tank very slowly so your filter has chance to mature.

Practical Fish Keeping used to be a good read.

I do have several good books on tropical fish, if you are interested in any I can post them to you for the cost of postage, as I don’t have any use for them now.

Or a Merman, we've got to be PC ;)

I used to date a mermaid, she was absolutely stunning, but it could never last. I can't stand the smell of fish:rofl:

All the gear, and no idea!
Whatever tropical fish you put in put in a couple of plecostomus and probably a spotted acanthadorous (talking catfish to you) they will hoover up any algae and crap that’s in there👍

Discus originally came from the Amazon although most supplied to the aquarium trade are bred in fish farms in south east Asia, if you intend to keep them you need to get the water ph levels correct and have a few in a group, if you get it right they may live ten to fifteen years but if you get it wrong they'll die quite quickly. They are very pretty fish, do your research properly and you will be rewarded with a beautiful aquarium.

Main thing to remember is that anyone successful in this hobby keeps water, then fish are happy to live in it.

Second is that all good things in this hobby take time and only bad thinks happen quickly ie be prepared to be patient.

I’d suggest to befriend a local tropical fish guru, a friendly helpful one that likes MoHo’s preferably😁 but most people are happy to share knowledge. Take plenty of time in the planning and set up of your new system as making changes afterwards can be costly and annoying.

Have spares….. spare of anything you think you may need as you know when that heater, cooling fan, light will break, yep on Saturday evening at 10pm…

And if you ask my wife what the best piece of aquaculture kit is in our house then she’d say the mop and bucket, it comes in very handy and more often than I’d admit.

My 4000ltr reef system is currently undergoing some major changes after 10yrs, but having been around the hobby for almost 40yrs now it‘s kind of par for the course😉

Ping me on anything, always happy to help out
