hi everyone

hope your all having a nice weekend

Ok here’s my question, i’ve a tag axel Fiat based motorhome do FWD.

If i wanted to fit cross climate tyres do I just need them on the front driving wheels or has all 6 tyres got to be changed.

Also if fitted on the front do I then need to have snow socks and/or chains onboard to cross into Spain from France.

cheers everyone

Al 👍

No idea. What I do know is that the ATS tyres are genuine.
And what I know is that he told me his supplier also supplies to all the big tyre co's, he buys 10's of 000's and supplies all the major outlets.

tbh your always gonna get the naysayers and doubting Thomas's, i'll let them pay the extorntiate prices and i'll have all the bargains and if anyone wants to come and inspect these tyres they are more than welcome to (y)

I'd be interested in his back story. If he buys 10s of 1000s then maybe the odd few are falling off the back of the lorry or something else - as its too cheap (below retail) to sell at that. He is selling as a private seller - so did you get vat receipt?

All six, but whilst cross climate tyres are better than summer tyres in temperatures of less than 7 degrees, they are not as good as full winter tyres. Your vehicle will be heavy and needs the best.
We have been driving out to the also since 1984. From the early 1990's it has been in various 4wd vehicles, always with full winter tyres. For my present car, a Range Rover Vogue, I bought 4 wheels from eBay and a quality set of winter trees (even though my car has cross climate tyres as standard. The only real expenditures long term was £400 for the four wheels because there is a much bigger gap between replacing tyres.
The initial cost is worth it.
Having said the above, we go skiing for the winter season (since retirement 16 years ago) and ski resorts plus the roads that lead to them are in the hills. I shudder to think of descending a hill in my 2900kg Range Rover without the best tyres available.
Talk to an independent expert about the best tyres to stop s heavy vehicle descending on snow.

I don’t want a VAT receipt, I just want genuine Michelin tyres at a non inflated price

See what I did there 🤣

He maybe a big trader/facilitator to large fitting companies.

He may well get a bonus of so many tyres when targets are reached.

Just because something is sold under retail price doesn’t mean it’s not a genuine product.

You need to know or speak to a tyre fitting company to know what the mark up on tyres and exhausts are.

I don’t mean the screen prices the fitting centre manager sees.
On his or her computer will be the bottom line he can sell at.
Not what the company, probably with many branches, are buying in at.

How many times have you been in a tyre place and they’ve given you a price of x.

You say you can get them for y.
The company you are at immediately looks at their bottom line and reduces their price.

My "large" local independent place could not touch black circle prices @ £200 even though I said I'd prefer to come direct. He said can't come close, just use BC and we will fit (via BC). Sad but if they could've matched and made more I'm sure they would have

(Incidentally, BC are owned by Michelin apparently?)

Totally understand your local indi might not get the type of discount offered to large nationwide chains.

As I said they will have a bottom line price.
It’s all worked out to profit margins, wages, overheads etc.

Just as an example.

A few years ago my Daughter was going out with a guy who had a very good mate that worked in Quick Fit.

She needed I think a middle section of exhaust on her car.
The mate supplied said exhaust at cost.
It cost a quarter of what I could get it for at my local parts supplier.

Also a local tyre company with I think 4 branches.
The owner bought himself a very nice Ferrari about 3 years ago.
I have nothing against people making a good living.
Just backing up my view 😊

There are some good margins to be made in my experience.

Yes I know but after speaking to Michelin on monday they confirmed they’re would be 100% no issues, that and 2 friends have them albeit 118 rating and not 121 like these are, and they both highly recommended them.
Then Michelin are contradicting themselves as they are very specific about not recommending C rating for MHs on their website for the reasons given, with what seems to me sound reasoning. I looked into this after a garage assured me that C tyres were okay for our rig and was interested to find Michelin following the same logic. The difference is more likely to be relevant to summer use.

Go look at any of the top premium brands of motorhome and you won't find camper tyres fitted. My N&B came with good year cargo van tyres from the factory. You'll find morelo ,Concorde etc to be the same.

The one and only benefit of camper tyres is they allegedly don't get flat spots so easy if sat around.
Under every motorhome body lies a commercial vehicle. Therefore commercial tyres are perfectly adequate.

Michelin camper and continental camper tyres are among some of the worst for sidewall cracking .

Basically they're shit

Why would they want to sell you a tyre for £150 when they can sell you a worse one for £220.

The advice they give is because a majority of campers are sitting there all winter and the extra strength side walls stop flat spots but most replies your getting are from people that use their van all year round so CP tyres are not needed, me included…😎

Thanks for responding. Ours, a Hymer came with CP tyres. The engine, chassis and running gear may be a commercial vehicle; however, the loading on the tyres is different, due to high centre of gravity, high mass, uneven loading etc, which suggests that some extra strength in the tyres wouldn’t go amiss, especially for mountain driving and the like. The comment about cracking is interesting as we had this problem.

Ours, a Hymer came with CP tyres.
Our previous Hymer came from the factory with Goodyear Cargos.
In 20 x years of MH'ing, I've never had anything other than commercial tyres on either of our MHs, with Bridgestone Blizzak and Falken Eurovan 2 being the favourites so far.

Al n Val. Nice one Al re getting those tyres at a decent price. (y) What have you been quoted for fitting and balancing, £15 - £18 each?

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Yes. You can no longer get the MS Michelin Agilis CP tyres they are now Crossclimate. I wanted one as a replacement and couldn’t get one anywhere. Think they stopped about 2021. My brothers just bought a new Moho on a Transit cab and I noticed it has Michelin Agilis tyres. Same tread pattern but Not CP tyres though, just van tyres.

Miss information Michelin Agilis CP still made and in stock at quite a few suppliers.
My van built in May has them, dreadful tyres will be changing to C tyres once they have worn down a bit, not too long I hope.

I haven’t asked yet Jock

we have about 5 tyre fitters around us and my granddaughters boyfriend works as a technician in our local garage who also fit tyres so i’ll probably ask him first
