Winter in Spain anyone?

We had rain yesterday (Murcia region) but today is lovely. Sunny but with a fresh breeze (and no dust!).

Our forecast.

Judith, Where are you staying in Alhama, thinking of doing the Sierra Espuna on Wed/Thursday after hopefully staying at the Sanctuary in Totana. Want to go walking around Gebas so thought Alhama would make a suitable stopover.

We live here!

The Sanctuary is lovely to visit. There's also, not do far away, an interesting estrecho (cave without a roof) between Aledo and Lorca. Estrecho de Arboleja (parking for motorhomes, see P4N.) Don't cross the wooden bridge with heavy vehicles though!!!

For Gebas there are a few places on P4N. We've seen a few motorhomes parked near the Mirador restaurant and at the Mirador itself (gravel track to reach that one).

Have you a walk in mind? Gives me more of an idea of parking options.

We've been in France and Spain since early July mix of wilding, aires and campsites and not experienced anything like that and loads of others on here have said the same so i wouldn't be put off by one person's experience.

We'd already made our own minds up, actually.

If we knew the UK weather would be the same as in March-June this year I think I'd just hibernate Jan/Feb and forget about going abroad.
But sadly the UK weather doesn't do that......................!
Somehow it's more than the weather in Europe, Motorhoming is so free and easy..roads in France Spain and Portugal so quiet it's a treat to travel. UK is a lovely country but hardly ever use the motorhome there now
.BUSBY.😀

I love how you don't spend half a day in traffic to get to a sandy beach then ages trying to park and then to squeeze on a spare bit of sand with the masses 😂

I love how it's only a 15 min walk from home down to a great stretch of sandy beach with hardly anyone on there

We are camped just up the hill 5 mins from here, didn't book, 10e a night, surf and a 4km white sandy beach, warm water and quiet. I love the uk and it will always be my home but it's not a patch on here for motorhome life.

Last week we took the motorhome up to Overstand (Nr Cromer) easy journey taking 50 mins. Stayed 3 nights at https://www.forest-park.co.uk/ A really nice siteset in 100 acres of lush woodland and an easy walk to the beach.

It looks glorious and we live in Norfolk but few sites here cater for the size of our vehicle and the ones that do are ridiculously expensive so we just don’t use it in the U.K. we pop along to various shows when we can but other than that we head straight to Europe. When we first had an American it just used to be for a month in the summer Travelling round france, now we head to find aires and sites in Spain and Portugal in the winter for six months (previously) and we can always park somewhere and are welcome despite being big! And I love Norfolk, born and bred here. Consider it god’s own county! But .... it’s grey, wet, miserable and cold from mid December through to February usually. To wake up most days in Spain to sunshine is a blessing! 😊

yes its Staysure, when you choose the plan and select it, it then opens up a new window where you can choose to add the FCO countries and add the 100 days per trip option which is perfect for us, and 183 days per annum.

We go on the 21st Sept and fly home for christmas on 20th December, fly back 4th Jan and stay until we want to return.

Perfect

PS. search for discount codes as well and get 20% off, ring them if it doesn't work and they will apply them for you (y)(y)
Just checked with them, no good for Spain as the FCO say only essential travel to that country.

We are here and 100% it is safer than the uk, main difference is here the law is the law unlike UK where police are powerless and lots take no notice of rules. Sites are well short of numbers so huge space everywhere, wonderful climate, get on the road, it’s the best choice you will make!

Not sure what you mean by this....we have just took out the Staysure policy and as stated if you click the add on extra they will cover you even for countries the FCO advise only essential travel only....you wont be covered for anything the FCO is advising against...ie Covid but everything else is covered which most other Insurance wont ....its a great policy and also covers for trips up to 100 days so perfect post Brexit in January.... and if you take it out now you get 15mths for the price of 12 to boot..

For us it’s not about whether the British companies are prepared to cover the insurance risk for travelling against the FCO advice it’s whether the local services in Spain and France etc are prepared to respond to the issue. For example I jump out of the van and break my leg. My wife doesn’t drive. We are now in a foreign country against FCO advice. How does repatriation work around quarantine issues for recovery companies that now have to travel themselves to help us home from an unnecessary journey? Too much wriggle room for insurance companies. I accept that all of life is a risk but couldn’t live with myself for perhaps putting my family in a right old pickle trying to get us and the van back to the UK. We also accept that others here make their own decisions around this and clearly wish them all the best with whatever they chose to do.

Your perception might be that it is safer in Spain, but the evidence is that Spain is far less safe from Covid than the UK.
If as you say the Spanish are conforming to the rules. It is not working, as they have one of the worst outbreaks of Covid in Europe.

At the moment Spain has had 14,100 Covid cases per 100k population. The UK is 5700.
Spain is going through a so called 2nd wave of infections, approx. 3 weeks ahead of ours.
The 14 day number of cases in Spain is 300, the UK is 65. There deaths are 2.3 per 100k and ours are 0.3!

Your 100% safer seems to come from the Diane Abbott school of maths!

We left Spain at the end of February. Friends of ours hung on until mid-March and had to frantically drive through France to make the tunnel. Some other friends on the same site stayed too long and ended up confined to the campsite with no pool, no shower blocks open and only one person allowed to leave site once a day to go to the nearest shop (not the nearest supermarket) for food. They didn’t get home until mid-May.
It’s not just the warm sun we go to Spain in Winter for, but for socialising and cycling. So it’s stay at home for us this Winter. Gary

The problem as I see it is there is no guarantee that Covid is ever going to eradicated completely...even the scientists admit that and they say its something we may have to live with like the common cold...in which case what do we do...are you going to lock yourselves away for god knows how long....all those retirement plans...
are you going to postpone them....going to write off a few years of your lives.....we take risks in life every single day....what we do is take measures and precautions to mitigate those risks....if you worry you might break a leg whenever you ventured outside youd never go anywhere...i say go....follow advice and the rules....take as many precautions as you can....but just get out and live you lives....they don't last that long..

There is a nice little site called Camping El Berro on the Alhama side of the Sierra España. Lovely walks form here, a very nice little village with restaurants.

You do exaggerate don't you! :giggle:

We've had some gorgeous weather this year in the UK and even today it's warm and sunny here in East Yorkshire, but over winter although we may get the odd nice warmish day the vast majority are cold.
It should be it's only Sept.. BUSBY.

Yes you are correct you need the extension to be covered no problem

Don't understand why you'd go for winter, the pools are freezing, the weather can be just as cold, Benidorm even had some snow the other year. Don't you have central heating at home? 🤣 We're always home by early November.
You must be looking at the wrong forecast, I’ve only done the last 2 winters in Spain but the weather has been amazing for most of the time virtually no rain and in between 11am and 3pm it’s shirt off weather. I’m here now in Benicarlo it’s beautiful 😎

I don't mind a cold frosty sunny morning in the UK, it's the rain that gets me down and that's all year round anyway🙄. Each to their own, enjoy😎
Yes, it's like living inside Tupperware for half the year.

I've sat in an RV on the lee side of a hurricane in south Texas. More rain in 24hrs than you'd see in a year at home. All places have dire weather days. It's a question of averages. UK averages for dark cold and wet are greater than either the med coast on indeed US southern states.

I see what you mean, I thought you meant that they were covering you for Covid. My mistake.

Did you try the pool? :giggler:
Defibrillator on standby 🤣

Each to their own 😊👍

Why all the stay at homes?
When you go out in the UK, do you have to do anything differently than you would in Spain or Portugal? Wear a mask in shops? social distance? etc. Is it riskier in foreign countries? The answer is no, you don't and no, it's no more risky.
Don't be put off by all the scaremongering and quarantine punishments, if you're sensible, you can enjoy the sun this winter instead of being in effect under house arrest in a cold and wet UK.
We're in Portugal and to be quite honest, I feel much safer here than in the UK because the Portugese are i think, on the whole, more sensible.
difference is UK 69 per 100,000 Spain 300 per 100,000. The thought of catching the virus in Spain or any other country worries me and at my age I hate the thought I have missed going to Spain for this last winter and going to miss this coming winter there, but, you are dead for a long time !!

This may seem daft, but ignoring staying at home is there a more 'sensible' place to go for winter than Spain in the current situation where you can enjoy milder weather?
