If I remember rightly the new haven diepe Route is subsided by the local council by giving money to the port of dieppe. Some get out scheme.

Pretty much every Port around the UK receives similar funding, ironically quite often through an EU grant! The Port of Sunderland where I'm based has received millions, both from the EU and from the Local Enterprise Partnerships / BIS, to spend on its infrastructure and improve productivity - it hasn't worked we are still sitting in the bottom half of the developed world productivity figures and way below our european neighbours.

that explains a wealth of information:xdoh: wondered where he had got to. best left alone then me thinks.

And yet the United Kingdom, with a $2.62 trillion GDP is the fifth largest economy in the world, way above the majority of our european neighbours.

Different Mark Bamford’s. Born 28 years apart and have different middle names.

I guess it’s down to if it’s your mates or not if they get the subsidy. And if it’s unfair competition. Nothing to do with corruption. Haha

It looks like a lot of this won't be a level playing field when it comes to competition rules. Part of a ports licensing to operate by the Department of Transport includes a security systems assessment. There are a lot of expensive security systems at ports, much of which the average passenger has no idea of. This equipment has long lead in times, and much of it is not cheap. Even things like poles for cameras and lighting, tall ones, take months of lead in times.
What concerns me as well is some of this equipment, like x-ray equipment for containers, can be provided by existing portable systems that travel intelligence led (random) around other ports. They would lose this if it has to be used somewhere on a permanent basis. Even worse, some very volatile materials detection will not be in place there.
It looks like they are willing to compromise our safety to get this implemented, and that concerns me.
The armed forces who can operate their own detection equipment for substances could always be brought in, but this wouldn't be a few days, or even weeks.
Living up North suddenly looks very attractive. Sorry Kent (if this goes ahead, big if).

Removal of passporting rights in financial services = removal financial services from UK.
The UK's GDP standing isn't so great if you look at it on a per capita basis. This data puts us 39th in the world. Though we can take comfort from being slightly above the EU average at 45. :)

Think that is down to living cost some eastern european countries people can live well on £200 a month

Didn’t sea France fall foul of being given French goverment money so unfair competition etc, so if we give money it’s not unfair competition.
The Government have used some very specific wording to describe the award of these contracts - "unforeseen emergency" - or something like that. By classifying them this way they get around the competition rules and were not obliged to put them in the OJEC where all large public contracts are supposed to be listed.

what happens to the 13 m if the brexit thing goes through?

With the likes of Dominic Raab having no clue what volumes of freight passed through Dover and the Shuttle small wonder they makes one c up after another. Ramsgate won’t get off the ground. It’s so easy to spend other people’s money and not be accountable. They are not fit to run a bath!! Let alone a Country .

They've heard the rumblings of discontent & incredulity...
If there's a deal, Seaborne get nowt.
Apparently
Which might prove problematic as they've just given themselves a massive bonus.

Not quite, if Seaborne can demonstrate that they're geared up and "could have" provided the service they will get paid the same as Brittany and DFDS, the legal fees will be as big as the contract fee by the time the lawyers have finished.

It is possible that the UK will be on "Short rations" in many area`s and for some years IF it comes down to a "hard" brexit. HOWEVER, as in 1940, it will be far preferable than surrendering to the EUSSR. Just like my fathers generation thought about Hitler, and the result of that was none of us speak German! as first language. (Thank "Your God"). OUR main current enemy is already within, encouraged by EU laxness, as witness again at Manchester last night!.

P.s. I will quite understand if this is taken down or posted elsewhere, but to me if brexit does not happen it will be the end of democracy, however weak, it has to be better than the current back door to dictatorship!.

What I don't really get is why we need extra boats. As far as I can see there is enough capacity to move the lorries across the channel already, and I don't think the cross channel freight will increase due to Brexit so why more boats?
I sort of get there may be a need for more border control staff if there is more paperwork or inspections needed and maybe even more port gates for the extra staff to work at, but all they need do is divert some of the existing boats to (say) Ramsgate if we need to re-open it. Seems a bit of a con going on here.

Not enough room at the ferry ports to park all the delayed trucks, what they are chartering is floating lorry parks:(

Like to think that an informative thread could survive in the real world rather than the belly locker. But if there was any balance applied here, I would expect you to be joining me in sunny Coventry.

As long as we can go straight into Belgium again I am all over it..

I would like to point out to all the doomsayers that, a few years ago, over 20 miles of the M20 was used a lorry park for a large part of the Summer, due to French industrial action in Calais. We still got fed, there wasn't any kind of food shortage in any of the shops, we still got all the NHS drugs we needed, no shortages were reported, strange don't you think ? (n)

I cannot and will not comment on the suitability of the Company given the contract from HMG but it is not unusual for a shipping Company to not own the vessels they use.

There is a Cruise Co. out there named 'Cruise and Maritime' who sail out of Tilbury and send cruisers around the World.
They do not own the ships but hire them from the owners.

It's all a cunning plan.
When us intrepid travellers get stranded in Europe with our Pets who have the wrong documentation due to a No-Deal Brexit this new Ferry service will assist us back home.
It's real name is 'wesmuggleyourpethome.org'
A fleet of rubber dinghies will transport you and your pets to a port of your choice and foil the attempt of Johnny Foreigners to keep you and your fur babies against your will in distant lands.

Well, that's what I've been told ......
