Wetherspoons planning to open in June

The place used to be an old cinema with a nice curved ceiling.
The architecture is really good.
And proly tastes the same ( if not better ) as the average 'spoons grub ! :-)

Oh good! I've never been in one yet, but one of the things on this pensioner's bucket list to get thrown out of a Wetherspoons. (y)
Last summer I booked a room online at The Three Tuns in Thirsk whilst doing a James Herriot country trip as he used to collect his payment there from farmers on market days. It was only when I arrived that I realised it was a Wetherspoons. The room was very shabby, like a spare furniture store room, the bathroom plaster was damp and blown and the kitchen extractor blew greasy fumes in through the window. I went down to eat and in the bar was a large herd of foul-swearing yobs and the dining tables were cluttered and filthy. I walked around the market square but no restos were there except a chippy so in desperation I got fish and chips which I ate in the car.
I left a Review on Booking.com but heard nothing.
Someones been telling porkies.

Why not? While the dogs would remain at home if we went food shopping, they would come with us on a day out or country walk/lunch out. Lying at our feet under the table they would be less of a hygiene risk than some of the human customers.
The last time I visited a Weatherspoons the burger was so chewy I had my suspicions as to why all the dogs were disappearing....

Yes, you're quite right; I realised later that I had actually been to a Withers once, but unknowingly and just the hotel bit (if you can call it a 'hotel'). I guess that as someone posted earlier if you're out biking with yer mates and just want a pee, a pie and a pint then a Fawlty Spoons would do. ;)
You can have a pint of that John Smith's Boy's Beer up there and still ride legally. Actually I never ever drink alcohol when riding/driving.

As an aside, I don't blame or berate staff for poor service but the Management for lack of training. I've nearly always found foreign staff very professional, which I assume is down to good training.

He says, while its guaranteed you are posting using a product made cheaply in Asia with less than model employment law. However, when I look at your avatar I can take a wild guess as to your real gripe with this business owner. :D

Meanwhile, I'm not bothered if they ever reopen, I've never been a Wetherspoons fan, I like my pubs to have a bit more of an atmosphere than an airport departure lounge.

Yes, I have a "gripe" with this owner as evidenced by my avatar, interesting to see how impossible it is to discuss real world issues without politics rearing its head isnt it - I'm minded to report you;).

But my "gripe" with Tim Martin is the same as the "gripe" I had in the distant past when as a student I refused to bank with Barclays because of their stance on apartheid, or buy Kit-Kats due to Nestle's actions. Arguably my boycott of Nestle products probably impacted on their profits so much that I single handedly changed their policies on infant formula milk sales to the african sub-continent. Being an ethical consumer can change companies actions for the better.

When it comes to Tech, then choices are limited, I won't go Huawei for obvious reasons so so many years ago I switched to Samsung from Apple as the lesser of two evils. Interestingly both companies have changed their policies due to consumer pressure, although Samsung acted more quickly.

It is that same consumer pressure that I wish people would apply to Weatherspoons now, as Wildbill has said many microbreweries are facing bankruptcy due their actions. I don't want to close Weatherspoons forever to punish Tim Martin as that would also punish 43,000 staff, I do want them AS A COMPANY to change their ways so staff and suppliers are treated fairly. As a consumer the only way we can do that is with our custom.

Many classic buildings would still be in disrepair were it not for the deep pockets of Wetherspoons. Many of the ones we have visited have been very architecturally interesting often with info on walls of its history. The carpets are made specially for that location also.
I especially like the old theatre in Whitstable.

Many small microbreweries have provided Spoons with those "deep pockets" and in consequence are no longer here. Those that I have tasted before their demise were very alcoholically interesting with hints of their history left on your palate. A dendrochronology of these former beers is normally to be found within the carpets which are specially designed to hide vomit stains.

Probably true, then they add the special "sticky coating" afterwards !

It's the same with so many successful businesses. It's being minimal to staff and relaxed about quality that enables them to keep costs down and attract the customers who want cheap or quick or convenient whilst en route. My first experience was on the M4 at Leigh Delamare motorway Services back in the 70's. Inedible greasy food. Never again.
You get what you pay for, so forth.

Have eaten in there a couple of times, once good other time not so good but it may have been my choice.
Easy and convenient at the time, don’t want a pub crawl around Manchester City centre without eating.

I wonder if pubs will have the bar and staff behind a glass screen with a slot for the drinks to be pushed through

That reminds me of the Boroko Hotel in Lae, but not a glass screen wire netting enforced with Reenforcing steel mesh.
Stayed there for 3 months in the early 70s. One night there was a bit of "unpleasantness" in the public bar, we'd gone out to a dinner party, the Bar manager paniced , phoned the cops (the police station was just across the street) The Cops just lowered the windows of the Police Station and fired tear gas across the street through the windows of the public bar

Didn't get much sleep that night the whole Hotel stank of tear gas:hot:

`Spoons, are a bit of a "Marmite" thing. Personally we haven`t used one since the dog ban. I have an app on my phone which finds "dog friendly" pubs WITH hand-pulled ale.

Like some of the OLD roadside "Honkey Tonks" in America then?.

We have been in quite a few WS over the years. We have always seen them as a non pretentious place that you can get a meal and drink for more or less the same price as a McD's. But over the last couple of years their menus have changed so the meals are costing more and portions getting smaller.

There are other chains offering better value for money (and most of the time cleaner premises) so I think WS's is starting to price themselves out of the food market. The drink is still cheap though but Martin is a tos#er the way he has treated his staff.

Not everyone likes to share their space with dogs..BUSBY.
Dogs should not be in the same area where food is served if the pub has a separate area then that's fine if they are well behaved, was in a pub in the lakes awhile ago where dogs were allowed and all you could smell were wet dogs ( yes it had been raining) not nice while eating your meal.
I’d rather share my space with wet dogs than the feral kids found in some pubs.
