Wetherspoons planning to open in June

I actually don’t mind most of them. (Wetherspoons). They offer value for money for the most part, as long as you accept that the “Dining Experience” is far better than McShite, but not “A La Carte”. Their beers are reasonably well kept and offer Value against the inflated prices in most other establishments. One might say they are the Tesco compared to Waitrose. They are also quite popular with local Heritage societies too as many are repurposed buildings, often of some architectural merit that would likely have been torn down and replaced with a “Modern Shed” monstrosity, or worse. By “developers” (shite of the earth), to maximise their greed. The one in Bridlington, though is well overdue a refurb;.

Some of the pubs are okay, but there’s no way I’m ever putting a penny in Tim Martin’s pocket. He treats his staff badly, and uses the pubs as a vehicle for his own political obsessions. If I ever go in one I just ask for a free glass of tap water. My choice...

I love Wetherspoon pubs, good reliable selection of reasonably priced beer. Food good and served promptly. Most of their pubs are in interesting buildings with some architectural merit. The Winter Gardens in Harrogate are well worth a visit. Best thing is you meet very few self stylised superior people there, just salt of the earth folk who know a good thing when they see it.
Last summer I booked a room online at The Three Tuns in Thirsk whilst doing a James Herriot country trip as he used to collect his payment there from farmers on market days. It was only when I arrived that I realised it was a Wetherspoons. The room was very shabby, like a spare furniture store room, the bathroom plaster was damp and blown and the kitchen extractor blew greasy fumes in through the window. I went down to eat and in the bar was a large herd of foul-swearing yobs and the dining tables were cluttered and filthy. I walked around the market square but no restos were there except a chippy so in desperation I got fish and chips which I ate in the car.
I left a Review on Booking.com but heard nothing.

I don't know of any in North Cornwall. They are probably all in the wealthy area of the Golden Triangle....Truro, etc, etc. I thought the owner lived in the Bristol area. Maybe he has a second home in Devon?
There's one in Perranporth, The Green Parrot.

A tad premature me thinks
Hospitality venues are likely to be the last businesses to open their doors
But Tim is a Boris & Brexit backer so does he know something we don't or is he trying to push an agenda?

Wouldn't step foot in one out of principle.
Firstly, they don't allow dogs - even in the outside areas.
Secondly, I don't want to give any of my hard earned cash to a company that treats their staff so shoddily, as in telling them that they weren't going to pay them and to get jobs at Tescos instead,
Shocking!

Interesting observation of what type of motor homes some of the owners have who commented on their views of Weatherspoons and would’nt be seen in one of their establishments.

I will agree some of them have been spoilt by the type of some of their clients who generally congregate at the front where in many cases there are outside seating and is used as smoking areas. I am also amazed how many have pints in front of them at 10 o’clock in the morning.

Up until a couple of years ago their lunch time menus always seemed excellent value for money but since then prices have risen in line with many other hostelries and lots have not kept up with refurbishing that is required due to heavy footfall.

We have used Harvester, Green King and one or two other chain inns, although they seem pleasanter in respect of their clientel they have no character in not having been converted from previously interesting buildings which I enjoyed looking at instead of just sitting looking at a mobile phone.

It’s a good job we all do’nt have the same tastes as we would all have the same motorhome, cars, homes, wives/husbands male or female, that would be a bit boring.

But it keeps the prices down ::bigsmile: £5 for 2 drink in there compared to£8-£9 in a normal pub, generally a good choice of proper beer and as someone says above so long as you are not looking for a'la carte its much better than Mc Doo Dahs.

I've got family in Cornwall. Cousin says her local pub manager in Wadebridge, a St Austell pub, has been told not to expect to open before Christmas this year.

Can't help thinking Wetherspoons are being a bit optimistic, and not a little irresponsible.

The others side:
I go in them as there’s no dogs yapping and running over the furniture while I’m eating and drinking...
The pubs and buildings the company takes over have been shut down for decades thereby rejuvenating a town and giving people jobs rather then stacking shelve at Tesco...

if everyone thought like that then there wouldn’t be many companies on the high st..... there’s lots of other well known companies doing the same and some won’t have a job to go back too...

Agreed. The breakfast is tremendous value too!

Still surprised when we went for a drink and meal at Weatherspoons and as we had dogs I sat in their garden while hubby went inside to order. I was then asked to leave by a member of staff as they didn’t allow dogs on their land at all! First and last pub that I ever came across that did that!

Don’t expect to be allowed in pubs although nice when they do, dogs sit nicely under the table and are less trouble than a lot of kids but hey ho. But not to be allowed in their pub garden?

Our local wetherspoons is in a repurposed bank, quite nice building and my DIL does the cooking, her brother is the manager. We don't go there though as any pub that doesn't allow dogs is not worth a visit. Can't be for hygeine reasons as otherwise half their clientele would be banned.

But you would not expect to take your dog in Tesco so why expect to take it into a bar/restaurant serving food unless its a guide dog?

We used to use our local one a lot. The food however started getting worse and worse.

One time they had run out of buns and fish, no burgers, no fish and chips.

Most times they forget something on the breakfast, mushrooms, beans, hash browns, it differs each time.

The final straw was when Lucy asked for eggs benedict for breakfast. They brought over two muffins with an egg on top and apologised, but they had run out of hollandaise sauce......

The beer selection is great, the prices cheap, it seems to be horribly mismanaged though. Shame as it’s a lovely old cinema building.

We now use other places where the food is much better and not much more money.

I wonder how often people who moan about pubs or brands of pubs actually go to a pub. We rarely go to a pub , have been 3 times this year and each time it was after a funeral. They would not make their fortune on me.

He said in or around June - but didn’t say which year.

It probably will be next year !!
Pessimist don't spoil it
Wetherspoons are popular and successful because he saw an opening and gave people what they wanted, they do some nice hand-pulled beer and at a good price.

I like them although the Scarborough one the toilets smell disgusting.
Been in quite a few on my travels and the worst one by far was in Poole, we are due to go back down in September Fingers crossed, and will give it a go again just in case it was a bad staff day.

Think thats realistic

I wonder if pubs will have the bar and staff behind a glass screen with a slot for the drinks to be pushed through

At Ramsgate the rescued the royal Victoria pavilion did a fantastic job on a derelict building, great in the summer on the upstairs outside balcony looking out to sea
I agree about the renovation, just a shame about the managers.

My bottle of beer bet says that will be a Thorley Tavern within 3 years :)

Why would anyone want to take a dog in a busy noisy room to sit under a table on a filthy sodden carpet....?
Because after a lovely long country walk it’s nice to get lunch either in the sunshine in a pub garden or if chilly in a lovely country pub. The once I have been in which allow dogs are usually in a separate area and have a wooden floor as the dog area and often as not I will take a towel / blanket for the dogs to sit on. Dogs are tired and happy to lay at their owners feet having a snooze while we wile away the afternoon eating and having a couple of drinks - what’s not to like?

I note that a lot of posters are saying the same things. Viz; Staff training needs improvement, Some of the older establishments are (IMV as well) due a refurbishment, and comments on food quality.

All the foregoing IMV, are readily rectifiable. It appears that "Tim" has taken his eye off the ball somewhat, perhaps time to rethink the push to open more places, and do some housekeeping?.

In "Normal times" there are means to make such comment. but it is suspended currently I note.

Why not? While the dogs would remain at home if we went food shopping, they would come with us on a day out or country walk/lunch out. Lying at our feet under the table they would be less of a hygiene risk than some of the human customers.
