Looking to wire my nextbase dash cam in. I've installed a USB socket for the SAT nav so thought I'd plug in there rather than direct to a piggy back fuse.

Currently it has a cigarette plug on so thought I'd try just changing to a USB plug so looking for one I can wire myself.

I’ve just purchased a Nextbase dash cam and have also ordered the hardwire kit. I know nothing about the power gubbins so will be getting a professional to wire it in. Don’t want to use the cig socket as the sat nag uses that and I don’t want to have a bulky double adapter.

More than toes wet now!
Be aware different usb output sockets can supply different amperage outputs so you'll need to take this into consideration. Does the socket provide sufficient?

I used one is these kits from evilbay. Still working fine three years later with the nextbase. The difficult bit was threading the wire through to the screen area, from the fuses under the steering wheel. But it didn't take long to fit.

It's on a 5a fuse, I looked at the hardwire kit and that had 2a I think.

Yes, but USB is 5v, not 12v, so needs higher amps for the same power.

It may be fine, have you tried it on USB?

My Garmin satnav has a dashcam built in, USB will run the sat nav but there's not enough power to run the camera.

But the amperage output is determined by the USB socket with them ranging from somewhere around 1A to 3.2A. If it's one of the lower output ones it may not deliver enough to run the dashcam.

Haven't tried it as I was look8ng for suggestions of a suitable wireable USB plug.

It's 4.2a but I'm using one socket for the sat nag

Well travelled
I used same ebay hard wire set, and yes it took longer taking the dash apart to thread the wires through to fuse box by driver. Took me a bit to find the right fuse that was ignition switched but gotthere in the end with piggyback fuse.

Thanks for the comments re the hard wiring kit. Has confirmed it isn’t something I could do myself!! I also got mine from FleaBay along with the reconditioned dash cam as recommended by Wombles.

My Nextbase powered base is fitted to the redundant mirror boss on the windscreen. It was a really simple job to run the wire down to the fuse box on the lower driver’s side. Pushed an electrician’s fishing rod (straightened coat hanger will do) up the inside of the A pillar cover after removing the right lower plastic cover, attached the wire, and pulled it down. The run along the top of the windscreen was eased under the lip of the top lining, so nothing is visible.

I've ordered a wireable USB plug now. Looking at the kits they are 2a so I think it will work. Watch this space.

When I had a Next base I just used a standard USB lead to 12v to USB supply mounted under the dash. Done the same with my KB camera in the new van.

It was easy there is a gap along the top of the screen and down beside the back of the A pillar carefully a razor sharp aluminium down there, guess how I found out. Then along the side of the dash you can tuck it out of view. Then removed the base the monitor sits on and the speaker to get the cable through. Mounted my USB supply on the back of the panel the step switch is in.

Can you send a pic when you get a chance please. Was going to mount at bottom of screen but it has to go quite high due to the wipers so top would be better.
