Update on Importing

Just going through the process atm, we are at the last stage with the DVLA, a week in.
Nothing hardly changed from our last van we imported in 2019.

I understand we are discussing new purchases. 4 years ago I imported a 9 year old Hymer from Germany. An absolute doddle without VAT payable in Germany or UK. I would now like to bring a 2 to 3 year PVC from EU. Any idea what I need to prepare for?
You will have to pay 20% VAT.

You will have to pay 20% VAT.
So if I understand correctly, if you import a new one, bought from a dealer who doesn't charge VAT there you just pay it in the UK, but if you buy a used one there, regardless of whether it's from a dealer or privately, you will have to pay VAT in the UK.

That was Sweden.

Ireland is going to change next year, progressively - the trucks will change on the 1st Feb and the cars on 1st April.
So when did Norway change.
Every search for Norway brings up the Sweden change.
That doesn't mean that Norway was driving on the left, (or does it)

Yes but if you bought from a dealer you should be a Le to get a nett price.

Be very careful, this is one of the big changes as VAT is now rumoured to be payable on imported second-hand vans. This risk has put us off second hand and driven us to buy new as the VAT situation is easier to predict.
What looks to be a good saving could disappear with 20%VAT NOVA charge !
If anyone has brought in a second hand van since the latest changes to the import rules Jan 2021 please correct me.

Not a rumor it is payable, most German dealers charge vat on the full value and often quote a nett price so it will balance out.
The UK dealers only charging VAT on the price difference under EU VAT laws was optional, Germans appear to have opted for the full amount.

My understanding of it is that the second hand dealers can charge a net price plus VAT (and therefore have recoverable VAT) only if they have bought from a previous owner that was a VAT registered business, often a leasing company. That business would sell it to the dealer for agreed Net price plus VAT. If you have a look at mobile.de, for example, they have various second hand listings and some will keep vat separate and some won't. Once it has been owned privately I don't believe the VAT can be separated. So if it is true that second hand vans have to have VAT added on import then it really only makes financial sense to buy one that still keeps the VAT separate. Guess that gets less likely the more owners it has passed through.

So that makes importing a second hand van totally uneconomical if HMRC are going to add 20% onto it's cost.

Not if you can get it a nett price from a dealer but would take away a lot of the advantage if buying privately.

I wonder how I would fare in this situation -

I exported our MH to Poland. I may re-import it to Uk at some time. It has always been in my ownership.

I have always assumed that there would be no import or VAT to pay on re-import, but this thread is starting to worry me, although as there has been no sale transaction I cannot see on what figure any % could be applied, or could they apply tax on its 'import value'?

Am I right?

If its a personal vehicle and you are moving back to the UK as a UK resident there is no duty or vat.

Our V5 just came through yesterday -HUGE relief as ever!
This is for a new van Carado T459 LHD imported after the new rules. Arrived back May 7th, V5 arrived June 21st.
Previously we have imported in Dec 2020 under the old rules.

To summarise: The only change (a BIG ONE!) is the need to get an import declaration number by submitting a labyrinthine form that , in the end, we paid £70 to get a shipping agent to submit it. Luckily we have a shipping agent for our business so we used them.
The imported van has to be officially input to the 'CHIEF' system, something that has to be done by trusted souls in the import business. Very stressful until we cracked it. Until it is signed off on the CHIEF system, you cannot submit NOVA and pay the VAT.
After that, DVLA took three weeks to supply the V5.
Phew!
I definitely would not import second hand now, only new. VAT on top of the price would wipe out any advantage.

We simply notified the HMRC with an emailed form and they calculated the VAT and then they inform NOVA.
We then paid the VAT and received a certificate for this.
Then sort the CoC with the VCA and now I’m the final stage of registering with the DVLA.

Never encountered anything that you have mentioned.

Nothing has really changed in the process apart from HMRC submit the NOVA for you.

The .Gov website gives you all the info you need, but for your convenience if you are non vat registered it’s a C384.

I considered importing a secondhand 4x4 Fiat Ducato van to self convert as the 4x4 is virtually non existent here! But unfortunately I would have to pay vat AND duty as its a commercial vehicle!!!!! 😐
