Unimog Camper Build

Sundays progress, The front panel is glued and fitted and the first rear panel is cut and fitting tested. I will glue it in next weekend. I may wait to glue the last panel in as I may need access to get the kitchen cabinet in unless I get a flatpack one.

This looks like its going to be an interesting thread to follow. Not very technically minded but will be good to look at the photos as you progress.

Hi All, I thought it best to start a new topic under the correct heading for the Unimog camper build as the last one was more question based on the structure.
Ill update here as I progress, please feel free to comment and give advice.
Just out of interest, where are thinking of going with your newly converted Unimog?

This is a rough diagram of my route that Im planning to spend 2 years driving. First year US, Canada and Alaska, Second year Europe and Africa.

Baja California (Mexico) seems to be popular with the American offroad fraternity. Possibly a good place to chill out depending on time of year. Don't think border control is a problem, at least for American citizens. And, you'll get a flavour of Mexican life. My son lives in Mexico and has visited Baja.

That's all the Panel work done, Now to get a door and start the interior fit out.

What a shame you are missing out some of the best bits of Europe, Black Forest and the home of Unimog at Gaggenau, Bavaria, the Alps, Italian Lakes to name but a few.
We had a great visit, in September, to the Unimog (or as I call it the Ohmygod) museum, including a run around the test track at crazy angles.

Hi Annie, Im hoping to actually do a few trips into Europe as trial runs before we do the big trip, so should hopefully cover off most of the major sites in Europe. :)

Hi Mhambi, we have the Unimog specialists Atkinson Voss and A.C. Price up here, within about 8 miles of each other and have used both for spares. Did you get your wheel nuts sorted ? I spoke to my son about it and he has given me a mobile number for a guy called Andrew Fisher who used to work for A.C. Price, but has branched out into Unimog sports and racing and seems to know his stuff. My son says he's a helpful guy and might be able to source your lug nuts ? Send me a pm if you want his mobile number.
Graeme.

Hi Graham,
I would appreciate his number please, I have tried Atkinson Vos but the wheel nuts are not Merc standard and rather specific to Hutchinson wheels, so perhaps Andrew may know where I can source.

The Camper door arrived, Now to fit it.
It looks really good and high quality with a built in fly screen.

Looks good. All you need now is an external restraining clip (like they use on Concorde MH's) to preserve the flyscreen when door is open.

Wow what a project and a future huge adventure!
Are you building it on your own or with help?

Hi Anthea, Thank you very much. Yes I am building this on my own with the occasional cuppa from my partner when its really cold.
Its going slow at the moment with very little daylight and working during the day, But ill be starting the interior shortly and will be able to work in doors with some good lighting.

Kind Regards
Shayne

Looks a terrific project, thanks for sharing.
Don't you fancy visiting south America ?
Then ship direct to Africa ?

I did think of trying to fit in South America but I am limited to time. It has been a life long dream to drive from the UK to South Africa which is home for me.

Thanks. This looks like quality kit. Are you using their windows as well?
Yes will be using their windows and roof windows. Im stressing about Brexit though as this will add import duty on top. There is a company Motorcraft in Doncaster that are starting to manufacture similar windows so may need to look at that option too.

Can you take a photo with some one stood by it? Can't gauge the size but I'm thinking it's huge ?
