Tyres ... Unsure what's best

As an aside. I took off our spare to check the pressure and grease up the release mechanism etc. Found it was flat and couldn't get any air in. It was fitted brand new when we bought the van back in 2015, as it only came with a repair kit originally. Turned out the valve had perished and fell apart. Cost me a tenner to get the tyre taken off and a new valve fitted. So don't assume your spare is fit for purpose!

I fitted these to my Frankia when I changed from M&S Alpins, they transformed the way the van handled and much quieter. If I uprate my new van I will be fitting these, I'm not the only person on here that recommends them.
Yep fitted these on my Tag Axle... excellent tyre, been on three years now with 3 trips to the Algarve and back...highly recommended.

I’m now in need of new tyres, wow the price has really gone up in the last year, but i guess everything’s gone up.

Lenny HB what do you think of these?

Having different types on the two axles isn’t recommended as they offer substantially different grip levels (particularly at the opposite ends of the operating envelop).

Ian
That's my thinking and why I would replace with the same if only doing one axle.

That is what I fitted, great ride comfort, grip far better than the Michelin's they replaced, quiet, handling good.

I definitely wouldn't have an older spare tyre on the same axle as a new tyre even if they are matching type. The grip characteristics on each side will be different due to the age differential of the rubber. OK only as a temporary use for the spare.

I agree with what eurajohn said about having the newer tyres on the rear. It seems counter-intuitive but that is the safer option.

Makes life interesting though and a lot of fun Hooning around 😉……but then again it’s a MoHo so best to be safe 👍

Agreed Personally I would never fit a spare tyre 🛞 for use it’s x years old compared to the date of the one that’s planned to go in the other rim. This means the spare may crack much earlier than the other new tyre meaning two new tyres if you wish to keep the tread the same. Buy in pairs at least that way it’s less problematic.

We changed our Michelin (Camper tyres) for cross climates, much better ride and a good level of grip when we were in the Pyrenees. Just remember cross climate are directional.
How does that work then if you use the spare? 🤔

.
Even though our spare has been lovingly cared for and housed in the MH garage?

I have five, Michelin m+s Agilis camper tyres 225/75/16. One off the spare wheel not used and 4 with 100 miles in the garage as new when I collected my camper from dealer end of Feb 23 to home and changed to cross climates, will be selling on my return from Portugal end of May, if anyone is interested.

time ⏰ degrades tyres unfortunately would you be happy placing 4 or 5 year old tyre in one wheel and brand new on the other. It’s about choice, personally I wouldn’t someone else will say do it.

Rubber compounds age deteriorate even on a shelf. Would you be happy to buy 2 new tyres with manufacturing dates 2 or more years apart?

Hmmm ... My head hurts! 🤪

I think I’ll end up tossing a coin - looking at the all season offerings from Kumho (Protran) Falken (Euroall Season). Any further feedback on either much appreciated.

Too late for us unfortunately. 🙃

We are not the same as some of you heavy weights as we are only 3000kg but had effivan tyres and they were awful. We bounced around like zebedee changed to Agilis CrossClimates and wow no bouncing and really quiet. Excellent ride quality not harsh at all. Didn’t want winter tyres as in the summer you actually increase your stopping distance as the rubber is designed for winter

Yes used them a couple of times. Order online and choose local tyre place for fitting or pay to come to you.
Same as

Or

I have used mytyres a number of times

Just had the Maxxis fitted. Mine are 215 75 16 with a 116 114 load rating.
Very happy.
If any of you are in the Mansfield area I can highly recommend Glen's low cost tyres on Chesterfield Road. I've use them for many years, always delighted by price and excellent service by guys who know what they're doing.

Bitten the bullet now - 4 Falken Euroall Season VAN11215/75 R16 R (116) going onto the van on Saturday. We'll keep our fingers crossed that we won't need the spare for the time being - that's a Vanco Camper!
