Trimming Back your trips..?????

Not really worried, I remember the running costs of my RVs with 6.8l V10 petrol (proper engine) , ok most of the time on LPG which saved a bit.
Mo you must remember yours also .

Topped up the Carthago yesterday. Trip computer said 31.3 mpg. Brim to brim calculation came in at 34.2mpg. Fair bit of pootling along smaller A and B roads rather than hammering down motorways. Have to arrange more fill ups in Luxembourg though.

Can’t trim ours back much more, only did 800 miles last year and with doggy restrictions trips will be few and far between.

Over the last10 years we have tended to cover 8,000 miles a year even during Covid lockdowns and restrictions.
We will carry on with that this year --- whatever the cost. :hugs:
We are running out of time not money. :Eeek:

Have to admit I'm feeling a bit cautious at the moment. I'm a single parent and I just bought my van last month. We will still use it regularly but it feels difficult to justify 150 mile round trips on a weekend with the cost of living going up so much right now.

I do take the OP’s point in that, for those on fixed budgets, something will have to give. However, it is clear from the responses that it won’t be motorhome trips!

I suspect that fuel forms a smallish proportion of our total motorhoming costs. I suspect that a lot would sooner cut back on other things if strapped for cash.

We have plans to stay away for a longer break this summer rather having to come home for silly things like work. I will make sure my credit card is clear to pay for the fuel and sort it when we come home.
Like others we bought the motorhome to enjoy our travels not to waste the money having it sat on the drive. It was bad enough during the pandemic.

We are in the lucky position that we don't have to worry about extra fuel costs, although Phil did mention that we should maybe base ourselves in an area and use the scooter to explore to save on fuel.

I’ve been thinking about it but reckon we will still do our planned trip. My aunt used to say - wish I knew how many years I had left - then I would know if I can go mad and do everything - but if it’s over 20 years it will be difficult. She lasted 32 after retiring.

It’s true though. Having bought 4 Motorhomes since retirement (2new) funds depleted with no way to add income, money does have to be considered.

What annoys most is get to 80 and insurance becomes a huge cost if you like trips over 30 days and have what they call medical issues.

Just a note, it’s the rich OAPs on a fixed budget, hit hardest.
The working Man can a least rise his prices to reflect market conditions.
this working person has not had a pay raise in 4 years I use the van as often as possible often not more that an hour/2 from home on the weekends or if I can go straight from work that helps I am going to take it out later today to fuel her full cost $101 last fill . I think now maybe I should start checking how much it costs me but what the hell Just seen the electric bike I think I want to go on the back 🤷‍♀️If I do get rid of the van the bike will go on the car

Will any of you lovely people be thinking of reducing the miles you travel to a site or rally.
when the rise in fuel comes..???

Me personally, it will not make a lot of difference as we have decided if we carry on to limit to about 100 miles from home..

I feel sorry for those who have scrimped and saved to buy a motor-home to tour and enjoy the outdoor life..
I’ve got to get another van first before I answer…😆

Not sure where your are but I do understand your concerns, I try to use my van most weekends and often do not travel far from home I was at wonderful free stop Friday night where kids love as it is an old quarry wit some great safe exploring for kids, mountain biking and the sunsets are spectacular its 1hour 45 minutes away from home but only go there if I'm in the area, I have another hidey hole near the beach again a free stop , I also use Brtistops rather than paying for a bit of field I pay for a meal choose them carefully as many have playgrounds so you have happy little people (if they are of that age)

Don't worry about 'freeloading comments' make the van work for you and your family, the kids don't need the fancy sites they will find it exciting being out in the wild. I also have found another place under 30 minutes from home next to the water leave no trace and the little people will remember it as their happy place

With the rising costs of electric and gas for home consumption we will all be better off in our vans travelling around than staying at home and racking up those domestic fuel bills .
Just need to get those standing charges down, WTF are those for.?

It’s not so much the fuel it’s the campsite fees some are ridiculous that’s why we don’t use them, Haven site 11th March 5 nights for £35, heated indoor swimming pool, all facilities.

I notice heating oil has rocketed up this week too, I paid 59p a litre a fortnight ago same company now want 75p. I wonder how much extra profit is there for them in that price?
With household bills rising it will soon be cheaper to stay in the motorhome

I expect that rather than many out and back type trips I will be doing a lot more circular routes. For example there are a couple of rallies meets in June / July with a few days between where I might well have returned home to catch my breath. Now I’ll look for somewhere mid way to stopover. Arguably I’ll use the van more not less perhaps slight offset that I can turn stuff off at home.

Why would I want to do that having spent so much on the MH.
I’m off for 3 months round Europe and Scandinavia and if it hadn’t been for Brexit it would have a lot longer, that’s the only reason I having to cut back 😟

Nothing will be changing for me trips will still go ahead.
no plans altered.

the prices of everything are going up it something again we have to put up with.
I doubt much will go down again.

we don’t have loads of money and never will but we bought the Moho to use and that’s what’s going to happen.
if prices doubled again our intentions would be the same but more than that I am afraid it would be less trips .
Totally agree you only have one life so live it

We need to eradicate the reason prices are rising.
Supply and demand, your investments may go up or down. It’s been that way for always
What investments would these be? Nothing cannot rise or fall.

I've already missed one trip and had another postponed this year for reasons other than fuel costs. At the moment my fuel spend is still within my monthly budget, but only because I used to commute daily, and now I don't. However I can see that no longer being the case very quickly. This year's trips are largely planned already, and any increased costs will be a challenge to meet, but they're still far cheaper than going on hotel or event based holidays. At the moment anyway.

Last year I was seriously thinking of changing my van for a newer one. The price spikes of the last couple of years have meant that's unlikely to happen now, so I'm spending considerably less money on making some upgrades to my current van instead. This also means that the expected rising costs of running a van will be more 'cope-able with'. And those costs include things like ever-increasing CAZs etc, as well as rising fuel charges. Aside from fuel prices it's been inevitable for some time that those of us driving 'dirty diesels' will be increasingly pressured by the government/local councils into giving up diesel - and subsequently petrol - and moving to electric by increases in CAZs (both in number and in the value of the charges), increases in fuel charges, and in increased taxation as we get closer to 2035. Not to mention potential 'pay per mile' charges which keep being talked about and which will certainly penalise anyone driving anything not branded as 'green'. They will try to price us off the road.

Shares, it always says on the advertising or paper work that the value of your investment might rise or fall. 2nd hand cars who would of thought they would rise in price.
