Hi All,
Some advise would be appreciated.
Never really wanted to tow a car behind the MH as we were always happy to walk out with the dog to wherever we needed to go.
However dog is now getting older so long walks of 6/7 miles are out of the question (especially hills). He can manage 4 miles on the flat (and he seems to enjoy it) with an hours rest in between which works OK but we miss the hills!!

We were planning either the Lakes or Scotland in Sept but feel we won't really see much. However if we had a small car then maybe we could drive further afield, and then do our walking at the top of hills rather than hiking up them.
We are already half way there as we have the following.
  • Peugeot 107
  • Tow bar already fitted to MH

Do people think this is a good move?
Anyone recommend a company near Bristol that could convert the car?

Alternatively we could spend all our holidays in Norfolk!!

Who you have fit the system may depend on if you have a preference for inertia or electronic, budget, etc as well as location.

i have a list of suppliers at https://spinner28.wixsite.com/tonys...liers-and-their-systems-in-alphabetical-order

Sadly, your thread has been hijacked, going off in numerous directions! I’ll discuss all the points by others but they should really start new threads! Apologies for the diversions…. 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Why is it you have to nitpick about every single thing I say? You clearly have an issue….🥱

Re-read my post, I did not say « you must inform DVLA »

I quoted DfT as both DVLA & DVSA are answerable to them.

DfT said, and I repeat ‘THEY said’, QUOTE: …….in our view it is likely that the DVLA should be alerted to this change. The vehicle may have to get a new registration as being radically altered from its original state. UNQUOTE.

DfT said it, I repeated their view….

I’m not sure I ever mentioned ‘inspections’ but, for what it’s worth, I think inspections on all a-frames should be mandatory, as should type approval (it converts the car (temporarily) to an O2 trailer after all, which IS subject to type approval and certification. That though is only my view, which you obviously consider worthless. 🙄
Having seen some of the very old well used trailers being towed by people in the EU, I worry about the condition of them.

MOT Inspections should be introduced for all trailers, where the wheels and bearings, braking systems and strapping systems should be subject to an MOT every year.

Towed vehicles, most of them have to be MOT'd every year, where the above are checked.

Probably because you, or they, are blocking me and some wouldn’t see the invite! 🙄.
So your FB I.D. Is?🧐
Yep blocked you on most forums as your just singing the same old song

I was originaly concerned about the car battery condition after long stints towing (+8 hrs) i rigged up an arduino to measure the voltage on the car battery. My initial results showed me there was absolutely no problem at all. I think i even sent the results to Mike. By the way i have the Duo system of Tow a frame. Can only recommend the system and the company.
We’ll have to agree to disagree on that!
Do you have an alternative suggestion as to why many TOAD owners are suffering flat batteries on them when they arrive at their destination? 🧐
I do not know of any toad owners who are getting flat batteries, a lot of the older towing systems have a power link from the MoHo.

The DfT missed a trick in 2012 when type approval for O1 and O2 trailers was introduced.
The original plan was to introduce MoT’s alongside it but, in their wisdom, DfT considered it too involved, logistically, due to the huge number of existing unregistered trailers.

I (my business) was gearing up to be an MoT centre and had already sourced the necessary brake testing equipment but, due to the long delay, I sold up and retired before the event!

Sadly, the lack of MoT inspections results in situations like this.. where over 70% of O2 trailers would have failed on breakaway cable issues alone…😡.
All of these users are involved in agriculture, tow trailers professionally and should know better!

I still don’t know your FB I.d…

If you’re the FB wizz you claim to be, you will know that ‘group experts’ are appointed By group admins…. The admin of https://www.facebook.com/groups/921897484990172/ asked me to be the expert as he knew my background…
Retired after 25+years as a designer/manufacturer of trailers and towing equipment, former director of the NTTA, former provider of training to the industry for the aforementioned organisation..etc etc

There aren’t too many folk with similar credentials who are prepared to try and have a dialogue with folk like you…. 🙄🥱😵‍💫

well we have recently changed our MH and also sold our TOAD, but after 5yrs of frequent towing on a LnB fitted towmaster electronic A Frame on 2 different cars (Kia picanto and Abarth) we had absolutely zero issues.
his doom and gloom is soooooooo boring! To perhaps round up his own quote of being ex this and former that…..I see he chose not to also say that he’s a FORMER expert, times have moved on thankfully!!!

The only reference I’ve made to LNB in this thread, as far as I can see, is about their braking system drawing 10.8amps. This info (not supplied by them) is from https://www.roadmasterinc.com/products/braking/invisibrake/index.php who supply the system LNB use.

as for former expert, where do you get that from? I’ve never referred to myself as an expert, I have however been appointed as such in one only, FB group, https://www.facebook.com/groups/921897484990172/. I still hold that position, times have not changed in that respect so explain yourself….🧐

Maybe if you guys stuck to actual facts rather than misinformation, snide comments and unsubstantiated innuendos, I might keep a lower profile!

It’s not an uncommon feature on SM for folk to hide behind anonymous or even fake profiles and dish out total rubbish and unsupported statements.

Hopefully, the more sane amongst the forum members can weed out the facts…….

Question.
Why do people feel it's necessary to ram opinions down other peoples throats? By all means give somebody advice, once, if it's asked for, but then leave it alone. It's up to individuals whether they accept that advice or not.
I'm a toad enthusiast, and have been for the best part of 30 years, because it suits us, end of story. I've also suffered from a flat battery on the toad, but in my case it's my fault for not carrying out any maintenance on the overrun coupling, resulting in it sticking. I'm also to lazy to fit a battery disconnect on the toad, why should that concern anyone else?

How does one become a ‘former expert’?
it’s a bit difficult to suddenly lose the knowledge gained after decades in the industry…. 😏

I commented on this post in its very early stages. I decided to “risk it for a biscuit” and take the Toad to France.
When we got to eurotunnel we had to pay an extra £90 each way for the Toad, I’d booked our whole holiday via CAMC and had specifically advised when buying the ticket that I was towing although in fairness you can’t specify a Toad, so I was a little peed off at the extra cost.
We jumped straight on to the French motorway network heading for just west of Orleans as our final destination, to be travelled in one hit on the way down. Usual motorway route down through Rouen. We passed, and were passed by, several gendarmes en route, even two sets in the exit area of motorway Peages. French customs at Folkestone made no comment on our rig.
On the way back we stopped near Eperleques for the night, again no attention paid by Gendarmes.
In conclusion I know that technically it’s illegal to have a Toad in France, but French plod don’t seem to be too bothered by it.

Hope this helps owners of Toads!

Cheers!
