Toilet Thread

I find fabric softener reduces any smell and breakers up the poo in the cassette
When we collected our new van, the chap who was doing the hand over, said that he used fabric softener, so may well give it a try.
Have used the Aldi bio stuff so far, which seems to do the job ok.

A device for extracting the stink from your loo and blowing it into your neighbours awning.
Thanks. I think I've got a SOG and didn't realise what it was. Is it the noisy thing that comes on when you press the flush button and it wakes everyone up in the middle of the night? If so, are they efficient at getting rid of smells?

Hubby finds the cassette easier to empty now we don’t put paper in, the paper goes into a scented nappy bag in a sealed bin and gets thrown out every morning!
We don’t use any chemicals, have a SoG. Hate the smell of the blue chemical, and you shouldn't empty the cassette with blue in it into a septic tank!

If you change the filter regularly they are good at getting rid of smells. If you don't they just move it somewhere else.

I haven’t got one, but I believe the fan only comes on when you open the flap. If it’s a noise when you flush then it may be the pressure pump you’re talking about? They can be noisy for a short burst.

Its a waste bin for waste of all types in a bin bag knotted whats wrong with that it all goes to landfil or incinerated. Plus it was said in jest as i read post as being lighthearted and amusing.
As never Wild Camped I often wonder what they do with there Toilet waste , do you bag it then bin it or throw it over a hedge or ditch on leave it for someone to pick up or in the extreme do you put bags lined up in the Motorhome to dispose of them properly ? us when on Campsite we empty the toilet about every 2 days so we think Wild Camping is out for us. :mask:

We too hated the Blue Stuff but then found Fenwick's Top n Tail which we find much more pleasant... However may try Bio tablet.. plenty on here seem to use them. 🤨🤨
It is Bio clothes washing liquid or powder, but not in tablet form. It can be in liquid or powder form, but the easiest way is to use the dissolvable capsules of liquid.

This will be the Thetford version. It's different to the SOG.

The Thetford is more of an extractor system to eject smelly air from the cassette to the outside (via a tiny charcoal filter that needs frequent replacement - about every 4 weeks worth of equivalent use) so you don't stink out your MH when using the convenience. One is fitted to my van. The fan is small, hence the noise in operation as it has to spin fast to achieve any air movement. As I go to the loo, before opening the flap, I briefly press the flush button triggering the fan to start and thus creating an lower pressure in the cassette. Once the flap is opened more air gets pulled through the toilet bowl, cutting out those niffs in the MH. The fan runs for about 5 minutes unless you turn it off.

The SOG system is I understand a bit more sophisticated. It is intended to promote the breakdown of the waste in the cassette by drawing air over the effluent and promoting the oxygenation that would help bacteria do the work - a very mini sewage plant. There is probably a much greater volume of air moved.

Most informative. Thank you. I now realise I don’t have a SOG, but I do have the Thetford extractor fan. I don’t find it very efficient, but that’s possibly because I’ve never found the charcoal filter and consequently I’ve never changed it. I‘ll take a closer look tomorrow.

I opened the link but unfortunately it is all in German.
Maybe Two On Tour uses Chrome.
That does do a webpage translation.
I looked & it's available from DE Amazon at ~€13 before P&P

Usually the Thetford filter will be under the toilet cassette. There are two slightly different shapes dependent on your toilet type. Changing the filter might be beneficial for the nose of anyone near your van, but I doubt it affects the efficiency of air movement to stop smells inside your van.
Those with a SOG often claim they don't need to add anything to their cassettes. I find with the Thetford the Aldi type Bio laundry sachet remains desirable.

NB for those who have used Blu type chemicals you need to ensure there is no trace left of those if you are swapping to more environmentally friendly systems like Bio washing liquids.

Those with SOG type systems may well get away without anything other than natural additives. But realistically for most of us who have limited capacity of cassettes I wouldn't have thought without additives there is enough time for natural SOG systems to have started to effectively break things down. The use of the Bio type stuff kick starts that process. It's not just about what whiffs you might get in your MH or when emptying.

I'd be very wary of using WD40 on the seals to the toilet bowl flap and cassette. So many of the rubberised plastic things will not be compatible with certain types of lubricant chemicals and oils and you may risk damage and deterioration.
WD40 is not oil based and will extend the life of the seal as well as improving the efficiency of the blade mechanism. Have been MHoming for 11yrs and never had to replace a cassette seal.

I use silicone grease on the seals

SOG is a trade name that has become synonymous with the product, like Hoover. Thetford also make a ventilation fan which is often fitted to their toilets. If the ventilation fan is made by SOG it works when you open the blade. If it is made by Thetford it works on the first press of the flush button.

Re the flush water, I use a cap full of Zoflora concentrated disinfectant in the flush tank and Lidl bio capsules in the cassette. Seems to work for me!

I don’t understand the problem. I put no chemicals in just urine, poo, water and paper. Never had a problem with smell I just make sure that the seal is in good condition by spraying with a little WD40 after emptying.
Look the first person on the planet who’s poo smells of roses and not the stuff you put n them. 😁😁😁😁😁

Could buy a spare cassette and wild camp for four days? Providing you have somewhere hermetic to store the full one!! 😖💩

Wouldn't be without our spare cassette. Only used a couple of times but extremely useful when needed! It's stored in a carrier under the van so out of the way. When it's full it's stored in a black bag in the garage.

We use the perfumed blue stuff 25ml at a time. Toilet smells lovely, cherry flavour we're using atm, and we have always no.2ed in it.
I tried the bio tablets once , it smelt worse than the raw poo, I wasn't prepared to feel sick everytime I opened the van door until enough bacteria multiplied to do their thing.

The only time we've ever even noticed the bio smell, it's because we've put too much fluid in when recharging. It only needs a small amount.

Does the full one not travel well in the underslung carrier?
I also wondered how much grime and mud the underslung ones pick up when on the road, as have been considering getting one.

The previous owners of our new-to-us MH had used the blue (formaldehyde) liquid which we rinsed out thoroughly before swapping to Elsan green, which has been excellent; really effective and usable with septic tanks. When that runs out we will certainly try the bio sachets trick.

I really quite like the smell of Lidl bio laundry fluid - and apart from effectively removing any err, crud on the inner surfaces of the cassette that have built up previously with use of said cassette in previous MoHo before swapping to Lidl Bio in approx 2010, it's also great for would you believe, doing any laundry cos it gets rid of eg underarm stains on clothing and what the adverts used to call 'understains' on underwear, bedding and towels. ie Bio detergent removes biological stains, so if you've cut a finger had a nosebleed or whatever, and spread the blood about - it removes it even if really dried-in. Watch it with bras though cos Bio also eats the covering 'paint' on the metal bits! But marvellous for white things generally - we have an elderly pale blue and white striped towel we use in the van, large hand towel size and it freshens that up an absolute treat!

What is the point of having all off grid facilities when you don't wish to use them - Stay at home

I know how you all like a good toilet thread!

We have a 7.3m motorhome with a toilet and shower in it. A lot of sites want you to use your own facilities now, toilet blocks may even be shut. We have always had a rule - no number 2's in the motorhome loo! We have stuck to this for 5 years.

OH is very squeamish and I may have to take this emptying role on😷. We use the blue stuff in there all the time and have a bottle of pink stuff which we have never used, the cartridge being dealt with by sterilizing tablets when we come home.

Any tips anyone can give me? Do you empty on a daily basis? Do you clean with pink stuff after every emptying? Any other words of wisdom?!

Thanks

don't be such a big sissy!!!! it wont kill you......……..

Not actually tried it but a full cassette is pretty heavy and the carrier seems a bit flimsy for that amount of weight!
