Toilet Thread

It’s amazing what knowledge is shared on this forum.

I vowed never to use the blue stuff again as it just reeks and the formaldehyde is not good for the environment. We’ve used Elsan green which we find works very successfully, but haven’t come across the bio washing powder sachet idea before.

However, the prize must go to the “pink rinse fluid in a spray bottle“ idea. What a brilliant way to save water, avoid filling the cassette too quickly and keep things clean at the same time! Thank you.

We too hated the Blue Stuff but then found Fenwick's Top n Tail which we find much more pleasant... However may try Bio tablet.. plenty on here seem to use them. 🤨🤨

1, If you have kids tell them when you are emptying! Otherwise they might crap in the compartment as there is no cassette, don’t ask how I know.

2, If liquid splashed on your lips, the natural reaction is to lick them. Keep your mouth shut and turn away!

3, That’s it, no problem at all otherwise. :)

If you have kids get them to empty it everyone should have jobs when in the MH...…….

mind and keep the emptying cap out of harms way. You don’t want to be fishing around in a chemical waste point for it if it gets knocked in when emptying

I put bleach in ours, that stops the smell in it's tracks. People say it rots the seals but ours are ok after 6 years 👌 oh and it's 60p a bottle not 6 quid 😍

We have been using either cheap Aldi or Lidl bio clothes washing liquid or the Lidl green loo liquid, but now we are giving the Ammovit crystals a tryout in our cassette.

The link below does open in English.

Always have a chuckle at number of folk who wear elbow length rubber gauntlets to empty loo and then take of and chuck them into locker to fester until next time. Much much more hygienic to use bare hands then give hands a thourgh wash. Simples 🤗🤗🤗
Never used to wash my hands untillboris told me to

We have, for the last 20 years, always had a SOG fitted to our loo's and use no chemicals. Personally I find the smell of the Blue worse than the smell of the Poo!
We visit people that have private sewerage systems and any chemicals would damage them.

We’re using the Thetford Aqua Kem Green Sachets at the moment. A friend recommended them over the blue liquid and I have to say the smell is pleasant enough and they’re dead simple to use. We try to use site facilities where possible emptying the cassette only every 2 or 3 days. I’m sure there are cheaper alternatives so find a green solution (pun) that works for you!!

When loos has separate flush tanks the pink went in there, it was designed ( I believe) to make the bowl slippery so your poo didn’t stick. !!!

We have on occasion fully utilized our van toilet although we tend to use on site facilities where available. The way I see it is that the toilet component of the van probably cost quite a lot of money and was thoroughly intended to be used as a complete toilet system. However if you can use the site loo it cuts down on emptying so frequently. The cassette on my present van is smaller than the previous van I had and therefore requires emptying more frequently. But the previous one when full was actually quite heavy to move and pick up. I use the blue stuff and find that it does the job. I have to admit though that I am starting to find the smell of that itself a bit obnoxious. So I think I may try the green when I get close to running out. I recently had to park the van on an extreme slope that was not fully compensated with wheel slopes. If people had a wee with the cassette closed there was a tendency for some liquid to seep over the side of the seal and into the cassette locker which required cleaning. I see that my locker has a drain hole to deal with any flooding but it's not something you want to happen regularly. Having a wee with the cassette open seemed to sort that and I'm grateful for the earlier advice to consider opening the cassette prior to a No2 which I can see is a good idea. The other thing which you have to quickly get used to is making sure the loo is straight before attempting to slide out and remove the cassette, to avoid damage. In my opinion, which doesn't count for much, I think the loo is probably the nearest bit of kit in the whole van. It's a fantastic solution and provides a great deal of freedom.

Yes our caravan had that, now you're supposed to wax the pan... Another use for Harly Wax 🤣

I have been waxing ours with Collinite 476S, gives the bowl a lovely shine and in the words of the song, it just goes "slip sliding away". :giggle:

Thank you all for your excellent advice . . . . except "grow a pair", I can do without any danglies between my legs thank you although it did make me laugh.

It is NOT me that is squeamish, it is the OH. He isn't keen on dealing with cat and dog (we have both) mess either. He has done nappies by the way which I never have (no kids).

Will put some of that pink stuff in a spray bottle, not flush every time and follow the bio tablet route I think. But he will NOT get out of emptying the cassette although I think we will now do this on a 50/50 basis. Like the cooking . . . as if!

Grow a pair may offend rule 1. Also it looks like the op is female and may not want to.
Definite vote for bio not blue and the pink should only be used in a spray to avoid flushing after a pee to avoid filling the tank too quickly, dont use in the flush water as it grows black mould.
I am curious about this mention of pink stuff in the flush water which I know about from caravan days but this motorhome of ours draws its flush water from the main fresh water tank so pink stuff not used. But the tip about the Aldi bio is worth a look but in most cases we use the green stuff in the toilet tank as it is biodegradeable. I say most cases as I have occasionally had to have the blue when the green has run out at my local supplier.

Why buy a motorhome with the facilities if you ain't going to use them? The main reason we bought ours is so we are not sitting down on everyone else's dribble or crap . If you have a dog or cat human poo is no problem! As others have said Aldi' s tabs are great any soap with bio on the label destroys it
Have you ever had children or a pet?
Grow a pair and accept that we all crap at some time!
I don’t understand the problem. I put no chemicals in just urine, poo, water and paper. Never had a problem with smell I just make sure that the seal is in good condition by spraying with a little WD40 after emptying.

Not been able to use chemicals for the past 3 months wild camping due to shops not being open. Now don"t see what they do anyway so in no hurry to find any.
ps: we don't smell, honest 💩

Those with SOG type systems may well get away without anything other than natural additives. But realistically for most of us who have limited capacity of cassettes I wouldn't have thought without additives there is enough time for natural SOG systems to have started to effectively break things down. The use of the Bio type stuff kick starts that process. It's not just about what whiffs you might get in your MH or when emptying.

I'd be very wary of using WD40 on the seals to the toilet bowl flap and cassette. So many of the rubberised plastic things will not be compatible with certain types of lubricant chemicals and oils and you may risk damage and deterioration.

I also regularly spray the flap and blade but not with WD40.. I use Thetfords own silicon spray. Would rather spend a bit more(assuming it is dearer than WD40) and use correct stuff than incur possible extra expense of using something that MAY cause damage.

I always carry a spare cap but never needed it until in Spain on our way home from Morocco I managed to drop the cap down the chute. Oh ?*/£$% said I, searching out the spare. Next morning I spotted the old one in a drainage trap, under a grid. Managed to lift it to recover the cap - and dropped my new smartphone, smashing the screen to pieces!

But as regards chemicals and such, we use Tesco bio washing liquid, half a capful plus a little water which tends to last us up to four days although I (yes me, she won't touch it) empty it on any available occasion. I tried the tip about pink stuff in a spray bottle, but found the bio wasn't lasting as well, think the pink stuff was "killing" it. So now we use a drop of the bio diluted down in the spray bottle. It also seemed to get rid of the faint staining that was beginning to show (after 11 years use!).

WHAT? Are you seriously telling me that the LADY of the van should have some responsibility for emptying the cassette? Oh happy days! Just wait til I give her the news!

That’s lucky...I’ve just bought some of that....is that after every use or once a decade like the roof...what about the splatter effect after 2 bottles of cheap Spanish wine a seafood paella and a case of San Mig 😱...doesn’t anyone use a toilet brush 😥 ?

I opened the link but unfortunately it is all in German.

If he won’t empty it then he definitely shouldn’t be using it.

The flushing water has been taken from the fresh water tank on Motorho-
-mes for quite a few years now so the norm is to save an empty spray bottle or buy one in a £ shop if you buy one with something in it, then it is usually a reasonable quality sprayer so you mix your pink rinse up in that with water and use that every time you wee, helps to conserve your water supply and use cheap bio tabs or liquid from ALDI or Lidl does the same job at a fraction of the price.

We found it better to use a bio washing liquid rather than tablets/sachets to save waste. We empty our cassette regularly so by only putting a little bit of liquid in each time it's emptied, if the following day we we empty it again, we haven't wasted it, however if we stay somewhere or don't empty it for a few days we can simply add a little bit more each day. Putting it in a washing-up liquid bottle, or even an sauce bottle, with a squirty top makes it easier to do so.

Our current MH has a SOG so now we don't have to put anything in but hubby likes it to smell nice for when he empties it! :giggle:

I find fabric softener reduces any smell and breakers up the poo in the cassette

I LOVE toilet threads! They appeal to my naughty schoolboy mentality!

Here’s to the three flush!
