Thinking of setting of on trip to Europe this week - any suggestions bearing in mind all this Covid stuff

Someone in Scotland told the virus ?

Strange how things change when you move from one place to another...
.
No it's just Nicola seems very straightforward in trying to get on top of it and doesn't have the drawback of a split in her party as far as I know they seem pretty united on agreeing to get to grips with it if possible.

The Germans don't share your confidence in her policy - making visitors arriving from Scotland quarantine....

If you mean thinking that covid is overdone I don't think that argument is being lost either in a balance of the medical experts the politicians or most of the population.
You know very well - what have ferries got to do with it?

She also thinks that England will have to pick up the bill.

I'm pretty sure all the politicians are doing the same calculation. The number of votes lost while they're still trying to win elections by the difference corses of action. If they took no action on spread though there would still be a huge economic impact as people decided to self regulate and try to avoid infection we can see that in the airline industry. There would also be the cost of the huge disruption to the economy in an uncontrolled outbreak.

As Germany is showing - there is a middle ground between locking everyone up and doing nothing.

Love this quote

A personal hero of Boris’s once wrote: “Nothing would be more fatal than for the Government of States to get into the hands of experts. Expert knowledge is limited knowledge and the unlimited ignorance of the plain man, who knows where it hurts, is a safer guide than any rigorous direction of a specialist.”

Yet, with all the pain Caused to the plain man, we are still told to keep quiet and do as we are told

Spain is a non essential travel so my LV travel insurance company will not give me cover so be careful

For me it's not the going it's the getting back that's the problem, unless you're happy to quarantine o return to UK, which we're not. So we've chosen Italy and have come down though France to the south where we've had a few good days of weather in campsites that are open. Some will close at end of October and some stay open all year. We are now in Italy on the med coast where the weather is good - 23C forecast for today. And again there are campsites that are open all year. We will go back through Germany with transits through Austria (to Germany) and France (without stopping) thus avoiding the need to quarantine on return to UK.

How long is a bit of string?
You take your chance and pay the toll!

Out of curiosity. Does your vehicle breakdown cover still cover you for trips across the channel?
staysure and comfort for health and breakdown , breakdown no problem no matter where you are , health covered for everything but covid

Sorry to disappoint but Nicola hasn't a clue what's happening on the street. She talks about a Scotland I don't recognise, Covid is worse now than it had ever been.

Well the numbers didn’t spike after the blm protests or the masses on Bournemouth beach either.
Its not easy to make sense of covid19. Governments all over the world are using sledge hammers to hit invisible nuts.
We can say its a conspiracy. Government incompetence or anything else that fits our prejudices. But its most likely they are all doing what they think and hope will work. So far without much success unfortunately.
There wasn’t a spike in Bournemouth because all us locals stayed away from the beaches! Looking on in horror. I presume the spike was diluted and spread around the country when the idiots went back home.

Government looking to open up the travel industry further. Needs to be sooner rather than later to avoid much unnecessary economic pain imo.
Yes why not spread it around a bit more!!! It does depend how it's done if they said isolate on arrival properly not on trust for the expected incubation period which I seem to remember is about 5 days then if negative free to go it could make perfect sense. Of course the way it's heading pretty soon there won't be that much point on requiring quarantine on entry as most places the worry would be in the opposite direction.

As you live in a Covid hot-spot anywhere but here please. :)
Ditto and not Suffolk we have very low numbers with Covid 19 why don't we all lockdown for 2 to 3 weeks again , think about the poor people who have to look after us , and even if you get it mildly like the Surgeon on the box tonight he said he had it 3 months ago and if he do any exercise now he is messed up the following day.

Wife and I wanted to get away to Europe to escape any upcoming October lockdowns in the UK.

We were initially thinking Spain, but wondered what all you guys and gals thought.

Ideally, we want somewhere that isn't like a zombie mask hell, but at the same time is safe and welcoming.

Don't mind ferry or tunnel, warm or cold.

Any suggestions much appreciated.
If your thinking of visiting Paris and/or some towns that are part of the Air Quality scheme then you need to apply for a Air Quality certificate. http://www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/

We won't hit 50,000 next week that was the prediction if nothing was done! Although if were at 14,000 today its easy to see how without action we could have been at 25k now and it was roughly doubling every week so I think believable others will not. What makes you think the park run stats are correct!!
Agreed on the keeping stats being rubbish then again if you can charter ferries from people who don't have any ...........

We'll just have to beg to differ.

I'm just not seeing the same stellar scientific geniuses running things as you are.

To me they seem like a hopeless bunch to me, who so far haven't got a single thing anywhere near right. But if you have faith my friend, then that's great. I wish I lived in your world :)

As for Parkrun stats, yes, I think you'll find 350,000 park runners will all agree that they do get the numbers right every week.

They can even tell you the average times over the last two months of everyone called Eric who ran at a Parkrun in the rain, is between 50 and 60, and lives in the North of England. Seriously. They are absolutely amazing. And this is for a totally free event run by volunteers - not a bunch of full time, highly qualified, civil servants with multi-million pound tax-payer funded budgets.

Now if they had those amazing guys and gals running the PCR tests and analysing the results I'd believe them 100% :)

Thanks for the heads-up on that. We usually just whiz around the peripherique. I will have to check into that.

As it is, I think we're going to just hunker down and holiday in the lovely UK.

The definitive test for who got it most right ( or wrong for the Wino) will come in the next few months.

IMHO Sweden were most right in the early days but now its the Germans, although there weakness could be that their numbers without any immunity at all could be quite high if the dam breaks.

I think history will show that the aggressive lockdowns achieved very little, particularly here, where the only success was to protect the NHS in a few major cities. There are surely less damaging ways of doing this.
I think the Germans all the way through they did it by acting early just what a lot of denyers are saying we didn't ought to do.

We ummed and aahhed over taking a trip, we were going to head for Germany but as we were delayed leaving decided to head for some sun. So travelled through France to Spain and then down to the med. Used free stops and now trying out some sites.

We have avoided cities and large towns, always sit outside, supermarkets are just like UK but quieter.

Spain feels by far safer than France, the social distancing and sanitising is implemented and encouraged by the public. Cashiers in supermarkets in Spain will tell people off for not following markings etc...

France in contrast felt quite lax and definitely not as well policed, sadly like alot of the UK the measures were treated just as an inconvenience.

Usually, we head into towns and cities for a bit of sightseeing and culture, but as avoiding public transport and any potential crowds that has not been on our agenda. So this time we are touring some campsites we have previously bookmarked, vineyards and farms. Everyone is very aware of the virus but just getting on with it.

One change we have noticed in Spain no menus, they use QR codes everywhere, scan and download the menu to your phone, menus are available but hidden so only on request.

Great thing is that sites are half empty or less so the pools are calm, choice of pitches great, and it is quiet as the usual socialising is much reduced.

We have seen few Brits, mostly German, French and surprisingly few Dutch.

same here

we have just left all the flies at Roses, Sangulí and Tropicana and have arrived at Bonterra park, setup and for the last hour have seen no sign of any flies so yippee 👍👍👍

Everyone in Spain seems to be adhering to the rules regards masks, even the tourists , social distancing is made easier as it’s lovely and quiet everywhere we have been up to now and people as usual are very friendly

All the signs up to now are it’s gonna be a lovely winter and anyone who has been scaremongered to stay in the UK you must all be crackers 😉. Actually no your not, please stay where you all are and leave Spain and the sunshine to us 👍

Same experience for us with France and Spain. Now we're in Portugal and they are very careful here too but not having to wear a mask outside in the hot sun is a bonus. Just had lunch and before seating us they wiped down all the chairs and table with disinfectant and servers are all masked.
