The Jumar's at no. 32 go on holiday (From Spain to ????)

View from my window right now (without the table and chairs and Martin cluttering up the foreground

Great to see you both on the road.Have a brill trip and tight lines and wool! Just back from our favourite place in Scotland which is now being ruined by the bl**dy NC 500! Leave for Germany in 2 weeks to visit Burstner Factory in Kehl etc. May bump into you!
Just celebrated THE big wedding Anniversary. Awaiting my enormous medal which will surely be arriving! (How can you tell Rona doesn’t read this?)
Cheers
Bernie :):D

Just parked up on an aire on a river and the first thing Martin spotted were fly fishermen!

He's looked into fishing here but it's too expensive for a dabble or two :D.

Had a nice bike ride this morning. When we set off we realised we'd done it before but a few years ago so no problems repeating. I did mention to Martin that I thought I remembered carrying our bikes up steps at the turnaround point but we ignored my memories and pushed on. Sure enough a flight of steps from the dam wall to the village faced us. One failing of having ebikes, they're so damn heavy. Problem for Martin, not me, he had to carry both of them up!

Up the damn steps!

A short drive in this part of France doesn't equate to a short time! Especially when there's a diversion for over 2 metre wide vehicles that takes you on almost single track roads, winding and up and down, to.deposit you at the far end of the obstruction :D.

We've now arrived at an aire found on Park4Night which we've just started using. It's at the village of Esperanza, south of Limoux and this time we're on a river.

An interesting part of the drive through the Gorges de St Georges was sanitised by a one way traffic light system

After a few Three Bears" type of days we have ended up in rural France near Langeac.

The weather is perfect and we had an interesting few hours on a Via Ferrata. For our first one for a looong time we picked an easyish grade. Unfortunately the grading was wrong and we found ourselves on one of the hardest we'd ever done. My arms gave up and it took a long time, some bad language and some inventiveness by Martin to get me up and over a particularly steep overhang!!!

A few piccies of the nice bits.

After yesterday's epic today we went biking. A marked mountain bike route goes from the village of Chanteuges where we are staying on an official aire du campingcars at the old station. We are all alone and have a prime spot with a tree for shade and a lawn (for our table and chairs )

IMG_20180624_130616.jpg

The route didn't go exactly to plan with some very steep, stony, muddy tracks, but we eventually made it back. One nice piccy though.

The sun's shining, it's not too hot and Martin is about to watch football :D. I'm going to chill, outside, with tablet, Kindle AND crocheting .

A photo of the village from about 20 paces away from where I'm sitting. Looks nice, maybe have a walk round later. It has an Abbey and other, assorted, interesting features.

Was the zip wire part of the route?
I'll stick to photographing flowers. :)

The zip wire was optional! After my epic, I opted out . Martin, however didnt, he hadn't climbed all the way up there, rescued me, and then didn't get the finale.

I sat on the grass to take a photo ... although ... It would have been easier than what I'd just been dragged up :eek::eek:

Hi Anthea

Hope you're having a good trip?

I was well and truly stuck (for about 30 minutes) didn't have the arm strength to pull my body weight upwards and couldn't go back down cos I'd already pulled myself over one overhang so couldn't go back down it. Martin was above me so could only help from there and eventually managed to rig some tapes so I could use it for a foothold. Phew!!! Was I glad to finish.

I wasn't happy, to say the least . The air was blue (allegedely)

I'm plodding on with my blanket and I'm probably half way now. It's going to be quite heavy when it's done so hope we get use of it.

We've just had a French neighbour, guess where they parked . They had music playing, had a "domestique" had a walk to the other end of the aire, came back and drove off!!!

Must be our Spanish reg number :ROFLMAO:.

Go safely you two. Nice to read your blog Judith. Good pics too. You find some lovely spots.

She's a tough cookie is our Judith, we were misled by the guidebook grading of our proposed venture......with no climbing training for two years due to injuries we chose something suitable for our condition.
An undergraded route was in my opinion a challenge not an epic.....we shared the experience and overcome the problem, came back safe and had a laugh later...being able to draw on experience is an asset to overcome problems like this. Hope Judith reads this.....her mother thinks we have taken it easy since buying eMTB's....

Well today we did our second via ferrata. Correct grade for two 60+ pensioners :), could possibly push another level  but today I'm happy. This ferrata was strange ' cos at one stage we went down into the dark and climbed back out.

We're now on the aire at Raucoules. We've been here before and remembered that before we got here (not always the case). Last time we cycled the Voie Verte, maybe something to do again tomorrow.

IMG_20180625_121515.jpg

We think a bit of crocheting necessary here. It had a bit of a soggy bottom!

Looks like you guys are having great fun.

Have you a final destination in mind yet?

We've headed towards Chambery and parked up at an aire at the village of Virieu from where we can join a mountain bike route we've found. The aire is next to the road but I think it will be quiet at night. Tomorrow will tell!!! There was one French van there when we arrived just before midday and they moved from shade to sun. We chose shade, as always. Had a bite to eat, got the bikes out and left them having their lunch. Didn't expect them to still be here on our return but they are, moving their chairs into sunny patches!

IMG_20180626_121426.jpg

Us and them .

There is an old watermill here but not much info about it and what there is, is in French :D.

Our bike ride took us directly uphill, where our bike batteries came in useful. The mountain bike route we'd found crossed our road and we decided to try it out. It was graded red, which can be difficult, but that all depends on area. This red route was well within my comfort zone and we really enjoyed it.

As Martin arrived here about nine Buzzards took off from the field. Unfortunately I wasn't quick enough to get them on a photo.

There were many nice tracks, just what our ebikes were made for.

We were heading up and over to Lac de Paladru. Our first view of the lake.

IMG_20180626_142856.jpg

We were looking for an alternative overnight spot near the Lake but didn't see anywhere we fancied. We did get approached by two very young females who were looking for a beach!!! Why is it always us??? We spoke to them in English (of course) cos Spanish didn't seem right . They answered in English but still didn't get the fact that we weren't locals. We directed them to the nearest shop to ask a local for advice.

We've decided to stay in our spot under the tree for tonight, even though Martin can't get football. Maybe he'll practice on his guitalele :LOL::LOL:. I can crochet anywhere :).

Now on an ACSI site at Albertville that we've used before. Any readers of my September 2016 thread will know which one.

Washing done, satellite erected, lunch eaten. A walk UP to the village of Conflan may or may not be on the cards for later. (We did it on the last trip after all ). Having at least a couple of nights here, maybe more, we're being totally flexible in our travel plans.

We have had a walk up to the medieval village of Conflan and although we found it OK we didn't get the same feel as we did two years ago. It's a bit too touristy for me even without tourists! There was hardly anyone there, I suspect all will be different come July.

@Littlewheels I can honestly say that at the moment we are functioning on Adrenaline only!!!

We want to retrace our steps (in the opposite direction) of two years ago to buy some white wine from a vineyard at Eguisheim. Their Riesling was lovely!

Thank goodness for previous threads!!!

Today we rode on the voie vert towards Annecy (as we did two years ago). Today was harder, 'cos although we were on 'leccy bikes, the battery didn't help against the tyre drag. Anyway we had good workout. Boring f@rts or creatures of habit???

Our ride up the valley led us to think about how different people are. In Spain we would be unable to speak after a ride of so many km. The number of "buenos" or "''a'lo" we would have to have said would have dried out our throats! Here, is reminiscent of walking around Clumber Park when visiting mum. Everyone is either in a hurry (road bikers who look forward with concentration and bulging eyes as they ignore everyone in their way) recreational riders who still look directly ahead, or, as you get nearer to Annecy, hire bike riders with no helmets or groups of wobbling families. None of whom seemed to speak to anyone else. The only people who acknowledged us were a man on a recumbent bike, a local in his allotment and a lady who said thank you at one of the road crossings who we slowed to let through.

And their drop zone with one coming in to land.
IMG_20180628_115455.jpg

We remembered why we turned back when we did last time!!!

Even so, it's a good ride on a predominantly traffic free tarmacced surface.

Martin had chosen another via ferrata for us to do up towards the Col de Roseland, so we headed upwards scanning the hillsides for the likely rock.

It's worth the drive for the scenery if nothing more. The lake was a beautiful turquoise colour and we could see motorhomers parked alongside it. Not for us though, higher and higher.

IMG_20180629_152352.jpg

We passed where we thought the parking was and looked back. We were going to be climbing on the crag on this photo.

IMG_20180629_105932.jpg

The route followed the ridge, crossed on a wire bridge and then returned through a tunnel. That was the rough route. The walk up was steep enough, although not sure who this thought the silly old goats were .

IMG_20180629_113738.jpg

IMG_20180629_173512.jpg

I must admit I wasn't enjoying myself at this point. It was pretty slack and swayed a bit. Martin admitted later he didn't enjoy it either :(.

IMG_20180629_131530.jpg

Towards the end of the route we were approached by some young French lads who had scrambled up onto the via ferrata somehow and were looking for a way down . Not having any ferrata kit they couldn't descend the cables! A scary slide down a screen slope whilst we watched them saw them eventually back on the walking path and they disappeared through the tunnel o_O ahead of us.

IMG_20180629_135018.jpg

After the steep walk back down we were both fairly tired, to put it politely, but after a cuppa we recovered enough to drive up to the Col to spend the night. The mist came down and gave us a comfortable night.

When you use the ferreta ropes and wires, how do you determine if they are still safe?

When you use the ferreta ropes and wires, how do you determine if they are still safe?

Good question...at the start of every season and after all the snow and ice has gone the Ferratas are checked....most times by the guides, damaged gear would be replaced at this time....only one time have I experienced a cable that needed attention, I reported this at the Tourist office when we returned to the valley. The above rules rarely apply to some of the original Ferratas in Italy and Slovenia where you are required to use your own judgement as is the case of what is expected of anyone who travels and climbs in the mountains.
