We did think of offering people on the waiting list priority booking for the next one maybe thats a suggestion.

I think that’s over complicating it and again offering to people prior to being open.

You’re back to the same scenario.

The meet Vs rally is a little tenuous to my mind especially as one of the big clubs refer to rallies as meets. The Fun rally marshals guide downloadable from https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/resources/rally-marshals-handbook.84/download makes the difference clear. It's like the Highway Code and worth everyone reading.

We have been invited too and attended two private parties that took place where rallies have been held. All organised by PM or email and is no different to organising a party at home or a hall. Whether they were sanctioned under Fun insurance I have assumed would have been discussed with Jim as only he knows the terms of our insurance.

So if individuals want to organise private parties, that's fine by me, but they should not be labelled rallies or meets.

I possibly an area that needs a little more clarity, and possibly charity.

Why would you be bothered about not being invited to something you are not wanted on, there's plenty more places to go.
I remember when we first started I thought it would be good to meet some of the others on here as they would all be friendly to fellow members.
Well we arrived on an Aire in France with a group of vans , all with fun stickers on and the people sitting in a ring outside so we went across with bottle of wine in hand and said are you all funsters , we have just joined and come to meet you, some of them turned and grunted , we don't know anything about funsters and turned back and carried on talking to each other, so we walked back and have never had any inclination to get stuck at a rally with similar people ever since.

I don't like the way Emmit does it, far too stressful for an old man!

The last time I tried, I hit the button dead on 1 minute passed ( didn't want to be early and ignored) and I was number 17 on the reserve list! 😄

Maybe you’re clock was wrong or your in a different time zone 😂😂

Having organised & run a lot of both, to answer the query about the difference between rallies & meets - rallies are held under the club exemption license & insurance with a named marshal responsible for making sure that it complies with the appropriate rules - this can be held on most land (no planning permission needed) for up to 5 nights or requires local Council approval for longer. Normally the named marshal will take payment for the camping & pass this on to the landowner. A meet is on licensed campsite pitches or a licensed area so not under club exemption license or insurance, can be for whatever duration the campsite allows (think most have a 28 day limit though in their planning permission) & payment is usually direct with the campsite or one named group organiser. Some campsites have additional areas with no planning permission for camping hence they are used for rallies so covered by club exemption licenses for those events. Our understanding is that the insurance for rallies is to protect the club & the nominated marshal (if they have upheld the rules) & does not cover the members attending or their motorhomes.
Knowing how much work it takes to organise & run rallies (especially the admin ), in any form, we have huge respect for those that continue to do this voluntary role.

Stepping aside from the question is it fun or fair.

First step is about being able to use a venue without camping planning permission using the exemption certificate. Rallies must be exclusive to members, after that all depends on the club paperwork lodged with natural England.
This thread is bringing back memories of an ugly argument in another motorhome group.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand the angle that you are coming from? Fun rallies are exclusive to members. i.e you have to be a paid up member of Fun to attend a rally.

There is no argument about that on this thread 🤷‍♀️

Seem to remember your comments re the Retro festival that only fun members who were active and posted should be allowed on "fun rallies" 😉 how it changes when it suits 😂
That should have said 'subscribed Fun members' but is otherwise correct. That's asI have always understood it anyway.

Still dropping clangers and making it up as I go along
If I fancy it and get on all well and good if I don't get in that's OK as well

It's not the end of the world Highlands end is next but it will be the last time for a while or not as the fancy takes me.

On and off for many years.
Running a rally is a big commitment in time but very enjoyable.

I have organised 3 rallies and only once been accused of being "unfair" and playing favourites. As it was there was space and the person accusing me of being unfair was booked in - then didn't turn up.

The next rally I organised I only confirmed places on receipt of a non-returnable deposit which concentrates the mind somewhat. I was then accused of making a personal profit but as any surplus for a rally goes to charity (I donated surplus to a blood cancer charity one time and the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance the other couple of times) that was baseless. Receipts posted on the rally thread.

Such nastiness does make one wonder why put in the time and effort though.

Probably people with too much time on their hands and bitch about everything going.

It’s a shame some people don’t realise the effort that goes into it.

It’s surprising the amount of effort that goes into just marshalling, waiting around for non attendees 🙄

We were on the committee of a boat club for a number of years.

The work we put into events was phenomenal, with the catering, entertainment, getting boats moored up, let alone the paperwork that went on before and after the events!

We had complaints every time, usually from people that contributed nothing, we’re always first in the marquee, first at the Jacob’s Table, and first to leave without helping to dismantle the marquee, which was a huge task.

We carried on for years, until the club closed. We did it because we enjoyed the company of the people we got on with and met almost every weekend and holidayed together.

We always welcomed new people and did our best to help with any issues they may have had with their boats.

Reading my post back, it is identical to any MHF rally or meet.

Those that organise it work incredibly hard for months before, during and after the event.

I never want to organise an event - those days are over.

I’m completely happy with organisers doing whatever they want, inviting whoever they want, and enjoying each others company.

Life really is too short to be bothered about things like this, and making a big issue out of it.

There's a lot of for and against here, but I'm not seeing much in the way of compromise suggestions. For Golf tournaments they use a set system for potential players and I would have thought it might be adaptable for FUN meets.

Something like Group 1 - offer to all last years attendees; Group 2 have a points system for those who usually come but couldn't last year up to half of what's left, Newbies - in a draw or first replies for what's left (minimum 50% after Group 1).

Specialist meets could include a ranking for Ukes, canoeing, wine tasting or whatever. 🤷🏻‍♂️
