The Big Lorry to Camper Conversion

Love the windows, you’re certainly cracking on! Our SIL bought a VW Transporter van earlier in the year and made a very good job of converting it. We have already had a couple of trips away with them, together with his parents. Good fun.
Interested to know what materials you will be using for the walls.
Bet you can’t wait till it’s finished - how long do you think it is likely to take?

I want it done by Halloween so we are going at it everyday after work and at the weekends. Got held up by the weather massively. I forgot to say, we brought one aluminium window for £50 as it was made the wrong size for someone else. Lucky us.We told the window man what we were doing and he gave us the bifold for free!!! Need more luck like that!

We started putting some flooring down, realised I'd made a error. There was no support on the side for the floor ?‍♂️

Saniclad hygenic cladding sheet is good stuff to use { in My opinion }. Costs around £20 per sheet 8ft x 4ft or 10ft x 6ft from memory. Ideal for general use especially wetrooms. They roll it up and post it out as well. Can be carefully cut, warmed up and bent etc. I use it for all sorts of jobs. All trims available. White is cheapest but they do other colours. 2MM thick + is best if you are going to cut. You could even spray glue it and use it as a base for say Veltrim carpet.

Clicked the 'Watch' button and got the popcorn out. This is going to be good!
About 5 years ago I followed an Australian conversion job like this - fascinating. He arranged the entry by dropping steps down from the overhanging rear floor, like coming up from a cellar!

Love this thread, nice one!

Great thread :)

Looking forward to seeing what you do with the rest of it.

Hi, Looks like a big job to me! Well done for trying.

I reckon you could do with some wedge-shaped bracing arms from the chassis members out to the outer edge of the floor bars. This will assist with roll stability/ rigidity and provide a route for under-floor wiring & water/waste hoses etc.

See below for an idea of what I mean

The OP has some decent steels going across the floor as shown in post #31

Any water will be best inside the warm box until the last minute.

Got to admit he has a good point. The massive weight of all that steelwork, all the walls and fittings mounted thereon, are bending the cross beams on a straight edge. They will fail there, eventually. Will it 5 ? 10 ? 100 ? years. There will be some sag now, maybe nothing to worry about.
