Tam &Toby do Europe ...Take two

You are very probably right about Jade's mindset stemming from her early beginnings it may well always be there, but don't credit (not sure credit is the right word) her with human thinking and reasoning . Dogs live in the now, they don't plan ahead, she just knows she has had to eat whatever she can, whenever she can.
So if she finds a morsel she must eat it, she can't think "I'm not really hungry now and Dad will feed me later anyway."
Milo on the other hand, in the beginning was fed by his Mum (hopefully ) then humans , so it is imprined on his brain that is where food comes from. He has never had to search for it to survive.

You may remember our Roly, Tam, who's pretty much same age as Jade. We've had her from 9 weeks but I recognise much of what you say. And Jade seems to have learned what's expected of her really well on the whole.

We've paid for training and doing all the right things and Roly has improved hugely. Thought we'd cracked recall with a dog whistle and sprats (she loves them) but she's deaf when she's eating seaweed or crabs or other delights on the beach in the morning.

I'm not sure you'll ever train it out of her. Rinse repeat and maybe over time.......

Many years ago, the first time I let my rescue dog off the lead in a wood he disappeared for about 20 minutes. I was frantic. I was calling out for him and asking everyone if they had seen him. I'd just asked another woman about him when he came charging back to me. The woman said, "You should give him a good thrashing!" I couldn't believe her ignorance. I bent down and in an enthusiastic voice told my dog what a good boy he was. You should never punish or scold a dog for not coming back. I always praised him when he returned and very quickly he learned not to stray too far.

I could never give either of my dogs a thrashing ....I am guilty of ranting at them though fully aware they haven't a clue what I'm saying but they do get a ticking off.

Mostly as I feel a right plonker standing there shouting on them and whistling and jade gives me rubber ears.

I've told her she's grounded many times lol.

I agree with @Val 2 dogs.
Our JRT is now-we think-about 9 yrs old and she still isn’t good on recall, but if I act & sound like I’ve found something interesting-she loves hunting mice-she will come back at a gallop!

Have you noticed the difference in Milo? He has lost that slightly ‘lost/worried’ look. I notice it when watching the TV programs like ‘Pogs Dogs’ in the rescue centre they look worried then they show them a few weeks late rehomed and they look settled!

They are both enjoying their holiday, and loads of walks. What dog wouldn’t be happy with food exercise and a cuddle, they are the lucky ones finding a forever home.

I would use a cattle prod,........ it worked well on my kids....:D

I get recognised and remembered all over the place too, I must have that kind of face...:D2

He's a very waggy tailed boisterous pup

Lol, I meet up with a woman who has a young Rhodesian Ridgeback (as that's what I have 2 of) he has just turned 1 and is 70kg, you get absolutely battered by him, but he is just an excited puppy that is bigger than a Shetland pony! My adult dogs are 50kgs each give or take a couple of kilos.

Imagine having that dirt tracking around your bed and leaping on your face Tam:eek:

Not sure I'll stay here the week I intended.
It's nice but I'm getting itchy feet so I'll probably stay another night as it's market day tomorrow and I still don't have sandals but then I'll probably move on.

Not sure where yet
