I parked overnight in Banff near the harbour...around 10pm this dodgy looking guy knocked on my door and asked if he could use my toilet lol .

I posted about it on here at the time.

You are probably more distressed than Milo Tam.
IF he's not longer coughing and choking? When he can no longer see or hear you and can't go anywhere he is probably just lying quietly feeling miserable but resigned.
I would be worried if you took him back to the van he will be so pleased to see Jade that with the dancing and jumping around he might damage himself further.
I really don't know, on the other hand, if he is the only resident the vets might not want him to stay in as that would mean paying someone to tend him through Sunday.
You would need to ask if he can be fed or not. Going hungry 24 /48 hours will not harm him in any way.

When I was in UK last year I think (but am not sure)that it was Banff I went to on their regatta day.
If so, that day they had a lot going on and it made an interesting and fun outing.

As said before, it's all a bit of guesswork.
Dogs being scavengers, it'll do him no harm going without food for a couple of days.
It wouldn't be an issue for Kerry, as she's so calm but can you keep Milo quiet & still?
Kerry's about 12-24h between what goes in to what comes out!
Much as you might not like it, please take the vet's advice re food & walks.

It's a bit of a nightmare this really...I've just phoned again and they basically say the hook is moving slowly but isn't out yet .....I asked how long it's likely to take and she says about 12 hours but it's been 21 hours already and they aren't feeding him etc and he will be distressed.

So now they are saying I can take him home for tonight and take him back tomorrow for an x ray to see where it's gone.
So I'm going back to the vet I'm half an hour or so to pick him up.
Personally I think some food and a walk would be better than him locked up in a cage with strangers .
But I'll see what they say
I'd be careful about feeding him, if it makes him sick the hook might get caught in his throat as it comes up.

I'm guessing they have done an X-Ray and seen the hook is loose and therefore should come out the other end so to speak in due course. Fingers crossed. :)

Ok so jade and I went down the vets again around 4.40 ...
The nurse says oh we have good news the hook is now just inside his bum ...So you can take him home and for a walk to see if he poos...Then you need to check for hook.
It's okay to feed him and if hook not found by morning I've to take him back.

They worked that well the buggers so they keep him overnight , dont feed him , wait till hook is ready to come out then let me have the lovely job of going through the shit looking for the hook and relieve me of €150 for the pleasure

They also never even cleaned him up afyer the diahria he had through the night so his bum tail and back legs are all matted with smelly dried in poo ?

Been for a walk and he's not done anything, jade had very dark red diariha though ? I really hope there's nowt wrong with her

So we are back at the camper they are both eating so hopefully he will poo later

I'm glad he's going to be ok but I really dislike how vets treat them and people
And it's amazing how when I phoned at 4pm the hook was supposed to be just in his intestine yet 40 minutes later they show me it right at his bum

Anyway I'll let you know when he's finally passed the bloody thing.

Stuck in this carpark again overnight as there's a football match about to start and I'm blocked in ?

Oh dear Tam....I can see why you're upset....but at least you have your boy back and can get him cleaned up properly. Poor Milo , not nice to leave him like that.... its not a pleasant prospect searching for the hook but at least youll then know for sure it's through....

That's a worry about Jade but she's probably just eaten something nasty.

I hope you all have a peaceful night, even if not in the best location, and all seems better tomorrow. Xx

Sounds like the vet was only going through the motions.......................sorry, couldn’t resist the obvious.
€150 and leaving you to properly go through the motions.
Hope both of them will be OK.

Yeah I've told them both ..The next time they fancy fish to let me know I'll take them out to a restaurant we can all have a 3 course meal and I'll have 3 bottles of red wine ...still be cheaper than the bit rotten fish off the beach

Don’t be too hard on the vet. They could have decided to do an immediate operation, costing a fortune and adding to the risk.
Be positive, looks like you’ve still got your dog in one piece.
Yeah I know just a few things bugged me , this animal hospital is open 24/7 and says it's walk in which I did so why charge €50 emergency consultation ?
Then if they were just going to let it pass they could have sent him home with me last night after x-ray and said bring back in morning, that would I wouldn't have been charged boarding and he wouldn't have been so scared , and he wouldn't have been covered in poo.

I'm glad he's ok obviously and I'm glad he didn't need surgery etc I but think sometimes charges can be avoided and a little more honest.

It wasn't an put of hours emergency etc they were open already and I was he only one there.

Main thing Tam is he is alright and won't have to undergo major surgery!
If you are thinking of staying in Portugal or Spain you will need to accept that the majority of people have a different attitude to animals (dogs in particular ) to us. They mostly live outside and don't share their homes so they are not worried if they have a bit of sh*t on them.
Cleaning him up and examining his sh*t isn't the nicest task, but put on some disposable gloves if you have any, if not some polythene bags will do just as well and breathe through your mouth.
Thinking on- do your poo picking behind him in a clear plastic bag, only knot it losely , once back at the van, undo it, half /three quarters fill the bag with water. Seal it up and agitate to a thin sh*t soup consistency. The hook should be easy to spot.
Good luck.

Good idea that with the poo

Blimey Tam, a bit of a worrying time for you. I've just caught up so I've not had the nail biting wait for news. I hope the hook makes an appearance soon.

By the way your mum is a real stunner. I think I've said that before. I'm so glad for you that she's recovered well.

It was such a minor thing at the time, so didn't say anything - but why did they put a cone on Milo... the hook was inside him?

Has he forgiven you for abandoning him last night, or his he sulking?
Bet Jade is happy to see her playmate.

Personally, I don't think the bill was over the top... once had to pay £90 for an out of hours consultation for Kerry here in England :( ... and Milo was in the right place had that hook got caught on its way through...

What about a magnet for find-the-hook-in-the-poo? Maybe over thinking this.

Langtoftlad I was wondering the same thing myself .
I would assume as Langtoftlad says he was kept in while the hook passed down through his intestines - the most dangerous time for him after that if intervention is needed it is comparatively simple and not life threatening.
Why we're you charged a €50 emergency consultation - coz thats

€50 emergency consultation - coz that's what you had. :A fully qualified experienced vet, an X Ray and his time.
Years ago I was paying £30 an hour to get my inanimate vehicle looked at by a mechanic! He hadn't under gone a fraction of the training that vet had!
Yes, they were open anyway but he'd maybe just sat down and put his feet up toward the end of a busy day, or started on his tax returns or had to phone his wife to tell her he was going to be late home again.
€50 is peanuts to have those people and that facility available.
Get real and be grateful Tam!
Sorry, but maybe you need to think a bit more deeply before passing judgement.
I hope I haven't caused offence.

Do you think it was in case he sicked the hook up and couldn’t eat it again with the cone on?

Glad you have him back , lots of cuddles .
Mum is looking amazing Tam!

Wise words Val.
But we have to remember that Tam is a Scot and they do have a certain reputation.
My next door neighbour is also a Scot and although we are very good friends he tries hard to live up to the reputation. :D :D :D

Richard.
PS. No offence meant Tam. (y)

I'm not really up on dog's anatomy so but I'm not sure if once the hook had passed through his stomach into his intestines it is a physical possibility to "sick it back up" ( isn't this why anorexics excuse themselves from the table mid meal or immediately afterwards as left too long, throwing up is no longer a possibility?
The cone doesn't prevent them eating, just from licking or chewing themselves.
I too was wondering why he was having to wear it.

Fairly certain Tam said the vet told him they were not feeding Milo, wouldn't the cone be to stop Milo getting at food rather than anything else.

Maybe in case he started to pass it, licked it, reswallowed it and restarted the whole process again?

Edit

Scrap the above, 'cos he's not wearing it now!
