Tam n pups winter trip 2022

Yes this one has a lot of advisories for underside corrosion. Mostly the coilsprings , the rear axle etc ... its surprising just how bad they rust. But it passed its mot in march so I'm hoping it's still saveable. It also needs the egr valve replaced and a track rod end and ballpoint. But I only paid £650 for it and its a good looking wee car its just the underside that's a bit rough. But if I can catch it and clean it up and underseal it then it might be OK. I'll be selling it in 6 months anyway most likely
A friend got one after I got mine, his gearbox went quite quickly, mine left a trail of oil across the garage when it went for its final mot, another reason it was condemned. We both had Rhodesian Ridgebacks, I had 2 at the time, great for getting them in!

Are you removing the stickers and boondocking id?
Or are they covering up holes :winky: ::bigsmile:
I'll probably remove them before it sells. There's no holes anymore those were filled with grp filler.

It's quite nice to drive and high seats to get mum in for shops etc. I never hold on to a car so as long as it does me till winter I'll be happy with it

Another (albeit belated) thank you for a really interesting travel thread. The pics were truly superb. As someone else pointed out, surely there must be some kind of an earning opportunity for you here. Anyways, many thanks again for all your effort in posting. Much appreciated. Cheers man.

Gave the motorhome a good wash today so it's now all good to go . Can't present it any better than it is now. So I'll let this guy see it on Tuesday, if he's buying it then I'll have a week or two to sort out my next habitation lol. If he doesn't then it's going on ebay but I will have to put a lot of the stuff I've taken out back in for now so I can get the merc to an mot . It expired in February and I need it re motd before I start the dvla process of getting the weight sorted out and it registered as phgv and van with windows etc.

Start back at work on Saturday night , the wee car I've bought needs a few jobs done on it but I want it earning before I spend any more money on it.

Right guys I'm enlisting your assistance.

So the guy is flying up to view my motorhome on Tuesday and he is very keen. I have 2 others interested too.

So the chances of this being sold soon is very real which makes me nervous as I've still not decided 100% on where I go next.

I think this merc would make an excellent camper but it's down to time etc too.

And whilst I may live with mum for a couple of weeks etc I need my own space so I'm looking at both caravans and considering maybe a cheaper motorhome as options.

So when you're all playing online looking at stuff I'd like you to show me anything you see that may be of interest.

I've 2 categories

1) a replacement van to keep for the next 3 to 5 years.

For this I would prefer a rear wheel drive, merc or iveco , preferably lhd but rhd considered, 7 metres, fixed bed over garage or French or drop down. Separate shower , oven , good sized fridge freezer . And preferably 25-30k max

2) cheap van to do me at least a year to live and travel in while I build the merc that might not be finished by winter. For this i want to spend under £12k . Still 7 metres max.

They are out there

The Merc seems an ideal base and would be a shame to get rid of it. Could you not get a full time job for the summer, work on Merc when possible and farm out other work on it to save time and while you are earning. (y)

No!! work full time, leave 3 dogs indoors all day then come home, walk dogs and work on the van:X3:

Of stop gadding around and get your arse in gear to do the Merc! 😄

Get the replacement van. You love your dogs you love walking and travelling around, life is too short Tam and like you have said before you didn't choose your lifestyle to stay parked up on your mums drive.

The self build Vario will always be a scratch you need to itch - now or later.
If you buy another van, even if it ticks all your boxes, you'll still dream about a Vario.

Is it conceivable to use some of your rainy day funds to enlist someone like Wissel to do the build?

Regardless of whether I bought another van or I did this one I still wouldn't be off travelling again until late October/November I have to earn some money as I've no income and can't live of my savings .

Aye its kind of like my "eleanor"

Although the vario I have obviously needs work and a few obstacles working around like the lack of a side door and making an interior work etc it's pretty good overall. The body etc is definitely a lot better than the other one was.

I just want to be sure in my head that I can live with it before I start it.

The ground clearance and simplicity of it is very appealing and it's sturdy .
The downside is it would be more compact and less storage etc....but if I can let go of my hoarding problem and keeping stuff I never use I would overcome that. The bigger the van the more stuff you carry and hang on to etc.

Having it motd will also be a deciding factor because if it throws up issues then I might be put off a bit.

Baring in mind the last owner was a bit dodgy , it's registered at 2900kg and it's a 6.6t van. Also his methods were to bodge things and cover them up rather than sort them so I'll be happier once it's passed a legitimate mot. I'll be doing that as soon as I have a decision on my motorhome

Once motd I can start stripping out the current interior. And seeing where I'm at.

Bodywork etc I'm going to leave for now and if I get the inside usable I'll get new sills etc done maybe in Turkey or something. The engine, chassis and most of the body on it is solid. I'll have a look under those aluminum panels along the bottom once it's passed an mot. I expect most of the sills to need work

Tam, an idea, why not see if you can pick up a caravan of roughly the same internal size as the Merc would be once completed, that way you can see how well you cope in the confined space before doing the actual conversion. If you can't live with the caravan then you have your answer.

Of course if you can manage okay you could consider using the caravan as a donor for the bits to put in the Merc, a much quicker and probably cheaper way to do it than buying the stuff separately, then sell the chassis.

Yeah I've been looking at a few caravans at the minute as I need my own space etc so moving in with mum would be a last resort and short term.

I also thought if I bought the right caravan I would just hang on to it and leave it here as a base when I was off travelling and that way I could still hang on to some possessions I don't want to get rid of. My heart says build the merc , I want to create my own space that is mine , but my head and reluctance to lose money is the thing giving me doubts etc. But looking at what's out there the prices are crazy .

Here's an example of the crazy crazy prices out there.

Personally I think raptor does not belong on a motorhome.

That was at best a £15-20k van ....

Self builds are equally crazy money.
