It's the towbar itself that's gave up

Towbar was on this when I bought it ....I just assumed it was good

Think how much you will save on fuel if they recover you home though 😀
Yeah but they'd have to remove the scooter and rack to load and unload it anyway and it would be a nightmare of a journey. I'd rather they just recover the scooter or someone welds the towbar

Looks like the box section has rotted from the inside out. I'm amazed the whole scooter and rack wasn't left behind.

You will be given priority by recovery because of where you are. We once broke down in the van but managed to limp into a petrol station, we had to wait for 8 hours as we were considered safe as we were off the motorway.

Where this seal has gone I have no idea , it was definitely there before and I'm not sure how it could just fall of either but there's no sign of it🤷‍♂️
It's was those feckin monkey's in Morocco, they nicked it to use as a skipping rope

I was doing 60mph on a motorway when this happened.....could have been really serious, scary as anything now it's sinking in.

We talk about a frames and scooter racks etc all the time and while they might be safe they are only as safe as the towbar they are attached to . I'm sure one of the previous owners towed a car with this van 😱

That is the trouble with tow bar mounted scooter racks, tow bars are only probably made to have 100kg downward load.
No idea but surely the rack manufacturers should know that. This rack is rated at 150kg my scooter is only 107kg

Just had the recovery guys on the phone . Have explained to them that they can just recover the scooter and the rack if its easier for them as they were looking to recover the whole van .

I'm hoping that's not going to be necessary as its not the most pleasant with the dogs etc . I'd rather they just ship it up to me in the next few days and I'll drive home

The aa guy is currently trying to find somewhere that could weld it ...if they can then it would be the best option overall .

Will keep you updated . Still need a truck to recover us to the welder though

Easiest and tidier to just take to tow-bar off all together and sell the van without one ?
Yeah if the scooter etc gets recovered home that's what I would do as I'm not selling the scooter etc with the camper.

I'd just remove the towbar completely

But if they find somewhere to weld it I'll go for that as it saves lots of aggro with recovery etc . And saves the recovery company work and money

Don't suppose anyone knows any good welders around this area that could weld this today? AA man is struggling

What a bummer but you were a very lucky boy.
I find it unbelievable that anyone would make a scooter rack that would just hang on a towball.

What about recovery to my place then get the rack sorted I did have a good tame welder but not used him for a few years so may have retired but there are quite a few about.

Most of them just go on the towbar to be honest but not on the ball it's bolted to the actual towbar. The rack is all fine but I think the towbar has obviously been made by someone not rated . Can't see any badge etc on it.

Still not sure what's going on at present. I'm sat in aa guys van while he's talking with about 4 different recovery guys and also trying to find welders. Which is the usual scenario of nothing till next week

If I was the welder I wouldn’t like to take responsibility lol , the metal looks properly rotten 🥲

Aye it looks rusty on the inside.

And surprisingly thin. If I'd made that it would have been at least 4mm thick wall box steel . This looks 2mm at most

Looks like going with original plan and they are going to recover the scooter and I'll just head on my way . So it's all removed now ready to be uplifted. Aa guy wanted me to take the rack with me but nowhere to carry that without damaging my van so I've taken the upright bar off and I'll carry that but the main rack is going with the scooter. They'll get that inside a van though

He asked if I could put scooter inside the van lol ... I think my face gave the answer . I was like wtf 😱

I've still gotta go pick up chairs

I'll just remove this towbar completely when I get home if the new owner wants to take it and repair it they can but I'm not having it welded.
