Tam, Jade and Franky's European Adventure

I’m a lurker :D loved reading this thread and was hoping you’d choose a wee dog. Jade looks lovely and will be a great companion. Our rescue ‘doodle is not crate trained as he was 2 1/2 when we got him .... but my friend’s dog which she had from a puppy is, and it means she’s safe and happy travelling ... certainly worth considering. You can always start with a crate then stop but I doubt you could do it the other way. Whatever way you choose to go, I look forward to continued lurking on your posts ... inspirational!

Tam.

Must say you've just taken me by surprise but so glad for Sylvia (the lovely doctor and dog rescuer) and for lucky Jade.

We're in rainy Retford for a week but might be able to catch up when she comes back for her op!
Yes I popped in to see you this morning but you'd just left apparently.
I spoke to a couple with an autotrail

Silvia doesn't speak much English so communication was difficult as my Spanish is not brilliant. But we managed.

A few more pics Silvia has just sent me.

Didn't have much of an internet signal the last few days. I was parked up between totana and aledo near the monestary so here's a few pics from then.
The monestary was quite impressive. ..the tower etc was in the wee town of aledo.

Oh dear ...... there goes a nice van...:D2
Well I hope not lol ....but this is my first doggy ...grew up with them and mum and sister have had them lots but this is my first.
So I'll be learning as I go ....think I may try a cage for when she's left alone to start with and see how that goes.
It's hard to tell at the minute she's just a baby so hopefully not got any bad habits ...time will tell.

Yes I'm giving that some thought at the minute ....not sure how I feel about it but will see :)
I haven't used a cage in a MH but I have in the past had to use one at home for a pup. Do it right & the dog will see it as a safe haven and not as a restraint. Put her bed in it and keep it in use full time. Throw a cover over it so she can hide in it. Most of the time the door can be open & it's her kennel. She won't worry about you closing the door on the occasions you have to leave her.

In a couple of months you maybe will be thinking again about swapping Frankie for a 5.99 metre PVC, now you have a dog.
I've shelved the pvc idea but I'm definately downsizing. At the minute my preference is a hymer 584, 544 or a hobby 600. But I've also seen a 6 metre euro Mobil A class that would fit my requirements.
Jade shouldn't in the vets opinion be that big fully grown...they reckon 8kg max

Let's hope so lol

Jeeso what a sleepless night I've had lol ...been awake since around 4

My heads full of pet cages and training and how do I go shopping lol.
I'm always one for overthinking things but having not had a dog before the first few weeks are gonna be interesting lol.
The joy of a solo traveller /pet owner

Reading the crate training thing , if you've to build up a dogs useage of the crate over time ....what do I do with her to start with when I need to leave her unattended while I go in to supermarket etc? Not sure I can leave her outside tied up ...and pretty sure I can't take her in to the store.

Our two both have cages at home though too big for the motorhome. They are their refuge and the doors are never shut.
They sleep in their cages during the day but rarely at night. Border collies shed like mad but wouldnt change them for another breed.

Yes the crate training definately seems a good idea , been reading all the stuff on that.
And of course different people have different advice. ...of course a major concern at the minute is if the dog chews things etc when left unattended. I don't plan to leave her unattended for long but there are going to be occasions where I don't have much choice ie when going to supermarket, launderette etc.
Having never done this before I'm just a little nervous ha ha .....

Once she has all her teeth she shouldnt chew anything but make sure she has lots of things which she can chew. Proper dog toys are best so she wont mistake any of your stuff for dog chews. I have known people give puppies an old shoe and then are surprised that their new ones get chewed.

Yes I'm planning a shopping trip today or Monday if closed today to get supplies of food , training pads, toys ,treats, harness, collar, lead....and a crate lol

Have seen most of this stuff in the Chinese and Asian bazaar shops ....so will go look there first

Hey Tam. I am so pleased you got a dog from Sylvia. She is the lady that took the two puppies I found near the camperstop in Totana.

If you still need a bike chain there is a small bike shop with a good mechanic in Totana.

https://www.bikeplanetotana.es/es/
Also in Ahlama du Murcia there are two - Hispana Racing is very good for parts and they speak a little English https://hispanoracing.com. The one we have used the most is Bike TecArea http://www.techbikearea.com

In Totana there are several Bazar type shops but the best one in Mac Four. They have a big pet section too.

If you still want to go to a Decathlon for your chain, the best one in the Motorhome is the far side of Murcia city - Thader. There is an actual motorhome parking area there where you can stay overnight, a huge Chinese Bazar, Aldi and many more shops including a big supermarket. It is easier to get too from Totana than the Carthagana one.

Hope this helps.

Stop overthinking it all! You'll both be fine with a few adjustments to your routine. Maybe so a big shop before collecting her so you don't have to leave her in the dirst day or so? Getting her used to the crate slowly can include your trips to the shops and if she's just had a walk and play she'll be sleepy anyway.... A major advantage to the motorhome is that you'll rarely be far away from her and will be able to keep an eye on what she's up to. Most damage is caused by dogs when they're bored and alone. For house/van training leave several pads around the van and praise her when she uses one. Gradually reduce the number until just one by the door, then when you see her moving towards it you both move outside..... shouldn't take too long. Dogs are naturally clean and don't like to perform in their living space...

In a few weeks time you'll be amazed at how integrated she is into your life.

Hi there
Yes I found your thread this morning regarding the puppies you found , Judith had put me on to the refuge when I first mentioned about adopting a dog back in January so I had planned to visit when in the area and had given it lots of thought.
Visiting the refuge was good as it was nice to see them being cared for ...silvia is doing a fantastic job so many lovely dogs being given a chance.
I managed to get the bike sorted. Most of the bike shops around totana and lorca were closed for Easter weekend according to their websites so I drove down to aguilas as they had a decathlon ...so all fixed now.

Not sure if the China bazarre will be open today but there's a couple of them here I will have a look at and if not I'll look in totana on Monday or Tuesday morning.
Not picking up jade till 5.30pm on Tuesday so will have time.

I should say too that because little jade is Spanish her name is actually pronounced haydee :p

Yes I think I'll have to get a good stock for a few days then head somewhere reasonably quiet for a few days till she gets accustomed to the van etc ....
I want to get it right that's all ....a dog turns out well because of the owner and while I want it to be fun I also want to train her well :)

Mums just sent me a pic of her two when they were little ....thats coco in the back and channel at the front ( sadly coco was hit by a car a few years back :( )

She's still a baby so don't expect too much too soon. She needs love, cuddles and somewhere safe and warm to sleep. The rest will follow as she develops. I got my first dog when I was single and traveling a lot with work. She was a very undernourished young pup so I had a flask of hot milk and ready brek in the car for her 4 hourly feeds. We were often out late and shared a fish supper on the way home...Hardly ideal circumstances but she lived to be 17+ so no harm was done.

Well she'll certainly get the love cuddles and a place to sleep ....no sure about the fish suppers though:p

Tam I'm gutted that you're spending so much time around Totana and I'm here in Retford for one week. We could have taken you out and about in our van to pick up doggy stuff if we'd been there.

Bad timing what???
Aye it's scandalous I tell you ....i did announce my arrival

Like the queen I expected a welcome and fresh paint :p

I might still be around cause I figure the Sierra is a good place to hide out for the first few days till she gets used to me

And learns a little Scottish cause everyone that's been talking to her will no doubt have been speaking Spanish lol

If Haydee is anything like Lola she'll be all run and bounce when out then curled up and dead to the world when inside.

We've taken Lola on some of our walks and left her in the car while we've had lunch and she just sleeps (car parked in shade and windows open a little btw just in case anyone is concerned!!!)

There are lots of places to park around and about the Sierra if you search them out. Did you get to the Estrecho?

The next few days may be busier with Spanish motorhomers then it should be back to normal.
